One of my husband's all time favourites. He would go nuts when he heard it, he loved it so much. He died of cancer in 1991 aged 31, leaving behind two children, a daughter 7 years and son 2 years. That "cowbell-ish" sound you hear is something called "Claves". Basically 2 wooden (high quality tone-wood) sticks that you whack together. Lead singer is Paul Rogers... awesome - cheers
@miou-miou-
@miou-miou- 3 жыл бұрын
not that all claves are made out of mahogany but.. there is NO tone-wood.. mahogany, hardwood, is found in/on most instruments. sorry but it was talked about soooo much when building guitars and such and there is just no truth to it. save your money and just grab to jenga pieces and wack them against each other and you will have pretty much that same sound.

@@miou-miou- Sorry. You might be right that too much is contributed to "tone wood". But I have heard Paul Smith (of PRS) tap a Brazilian rosewood neck blank, and it has a pitch that it resonates at. As far as Claves go, even you could tell the difference between good claves and banging jenga pieces together.

The singer Paul Rodgers was only 19 when he recorded this. He then became one of the best soulful rock vocalists in history. The sound you thought was a cowbell is actually from a Wood Clave, a pair of hardwood sticks about 8 inches long with a small center drilled out core to amplify the sound. A percussion instrument rooted in afro-cuban and latin rhythms

Paul Rodgers said that when they wrote this song what he was wanting was a song that they can end their concerts with. They were currently ending their concerts with a blues cover tune, but they wanted their own, so he wrote the chorus right then by singing it to the band and they went and finished the rest of it. This is the classic rock song from that era and Paul Rodgers is the icon of hard rock singers from that time.

After Freddie died, Paul Rodgers was asked to front Queen for live performances and did so. As part of the set, this song was always played. This is one of the greatest Rock songs of all time. Free are one of the sadly underrated British bands of the 70s. Every bit as good as any of those considered to be major bands at the time, absolutely amazing. The singer Paul Rodgers and the Drummer Simon Kirke went on to form Bad Company. Well worth diving deeper into Free. I believe the girl/woman he's singing about is Gloria Jones, who was in later years Marc Bolan's girlfriend.

Reason I ask, is because you might not already be aware of this, but. Back in 1970 at the height of their fame, "FREE" made a Granada T.V appearance kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZi3Z417r9yDj5I That razor sharp video caught "FREE" at their absolute finest (all the stars aligned !!) - It was filmed in Manchester, England. "Granada T.V" were an independant company making & selling high-end quality T.V programmes to Britain's only other competitor to the B.B.C (back then) They were a major television company named "I.T.V" Back in those days there were only THREE British Television channels, BBC.1, BBC.2 & of course "I.T.V" The latter showed programmes like "The Saint" (Roger Moore) "Coronation Street" (also made by Granada) & shows you might've heard of like Gerry Anderson's "Thunderbirds" (puppets) & I should also add shows like "The Muppets" - If you're NOT from England, than it's highly unlikely you'll know about this magical film-stidio perfomance & capture of (by far) one of Britain's finest bands ("FREE") in that studio back in 1970 Many British bands ruled the airwaves, even in America at the times (Beatles, Cream, Rolling Stones, etc) I wanted to steer you in the direction of this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZi3Z417r9yDj5I lest you not be aware of it ? If you ARE from England & already know about it, then please DO forgive me - As I wanted to share it with you, being as "one FREE fan to another" & of course, similar/same age - I hope you DO enjoy the video ? "Ride On A Pony" wasn't famous, unlike "Wishing Well" or "All Right Now" (also a huge hit in 1970) But THAT video link kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZi3Z417r9yDj5I shows ALL of the band at the height of their powers & youth, whilst capturing such a magical performance, particularly from Paul Rodgers** **( Note the confidence, swagger, sublime vocals & sheer relaxed stage presence he has here !!!!!!)

There is a splendid tale of ONE of Paul Kossoff's Gibson Les Paul's here on You Tube It was sold to Arthur Ramm when P.K sold it (sadly) to buy Heroin - (Ramm didn;t know of course) kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6mupIB-idubpNk Ramm kept it & it survives to the present day & is revered & has been used 'Live' by Joe Bonamassa I bought a (Left-Handed) Gibson Les Paul Custom (1982 model) myself about 18 yrs ago now First thing I played on it was both "All Right Now" & "Fire & Water" my other all time fave "FREE" track There IS a German T.V studio clip showcasing "Fire & Water" which might be of the same batch ? (By that, I mean the "Be My Friend" cilp that's now M.i.A)

When I think of great rock classics this is near the top. This gem came out in 1970 and hit number 4 on the charts.Paul Rodgers is Phenomenal. A lesser known song by Free but none the less a great song was MY BROTHER JAKE. After Free Paul Rodgers and his drummer started the band Bad Company with hits like FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE and ROCK 'N' ROLL FANTASY.

I’m so glad I grew up in this era. When you clicked on the radio, the music was so good you never had to change stations to find better songs. AM, FM the hits just came, one right after another! You could, and did rock out 24 hours a day! YOU’VE GOT TO LISTEN TO NAZARETH, HAIR OF THE DOG! COWBELLS GALORE! Roger in Pierre South Dakota

Free actually morphed into Bad Company, had all the same members. The Move morphed into ELO, all the same members also. Both Jeff Lynne and Paul Rodgers took control , changed their sound ( ELO more than Free ) and became huge!

This was part of the "heavy" R&B movement. Great groove with a powerful riff and strong vocals. Keep going.

This takes me back to the summer before my senior year of high school. The lead singer is Paul Rodgers! It reminds me of hanging out with my friends and heading through the canyons to go to the beach....we had the radio WAY up when we heard this!

This is one of a short list of "overplayed" hit singles that I never get tired of hearing. Ironically, a lot of them are from 1970, 1971. "Spirit in the Sky", "Maggie May", this one, "One Toke Over the Line", "I Don't Know How to Love Him", "Sweet City Woman ('72), "Baby I'm-a Want You". I think it's the 3-minute limit. Amber, I'm pretty sure you are recognizing "All Right Now" from a recent TV ad.

Have no idea why, but for some reason this always brings Foghat's "Slow Ride" to mind too. I know it's an odd pairing, and I doubt it happens for anyone else lol. But it never fails for me. As soon as I hear one, I think of the other. I must have had them paired together on a playlist at one point or another. Either way, I highly recommend you check that one out as well - Slow Ride by Foghat.

man, that song was played so much on the local Houston rock stations when I was growing up that I just got tired of it and have kinda ignored it forever. But somehow, watching other people react to stuff for the first time gives you that new appreciation of songs. I never realized how good it was (and I'm a guitar player for 30 years)

People who grew up in the 70's and 80's knew this riff from at least tv commercials. From 'Time Life' info commercials. Where they were selling music tapes. I know, a weird reference but for those of us that lived it, it's memory some of us have.

@@herekittykittykitty475 Yeah, weird right? I just flashed back on that event randomly. Even though I've listen and watched the videos of this song many times over the years. I clearly remember those 'Time Life' info commercials playing the riff of this song. It's iconic for those of us back in the 80's.
