With the deepest respect to your friend - and no offence meant, but your friend obviously doesn't understand a crucial thing. Anyone can sing a song and even those that can actually sing may have a great voice as has been of many artists, but they have no ability to convey the emotion of the song and performance they are giving. But even with all that, to have the ability to make the listener, be affected by that emotion to feel it and well Karen/ the Carpenters had that. Anyone that would actually listen to a full song of the Carpenters whichever song that is would feel that, whereas of course only giving it a few seconds and already having a closed mind well - alas it is your friends loss. But yeah for me Elvis and Karen the 2 who truly fully made you feel something almost going beyond, music of an earthly level and touching spiritual even. That is the power of their emotional connection through their music they achieved.

On a technical level, singing and drumming at the same time is incredibly difficult... for us mere mortals. Most people can't separate what the hands and the voice are doing rhythmically; If you listen to a lot of other singing drummers their notes are right on the drum beat like a metronome, but Karen was able to split her brain in two and put a lot of deliberate off-beat character into the timing of her singing. For this reason I think of this as not one great performance, but two simultaneous great performances. Genius in fact.

She is absolutely beautiful. Her voice is so pure. This song is one of my favorites.

Karen never even wanted to sing. She just wanted to play the drums but her brother forced her to do it (glad he did.) Richard deserves a lot of credit because he also arranged all their songs and did all the harmonies. She had one of the most gorgeous voices but Richard is a musical genius.

_"what I've got they used to call the blues"_ I think this is the first commercial song that ever portrayed depression. Karen suffered from it and was the only person who could put it into song so perfectly.

Interestingly enough, the song was somewhat inspired by Paul's mother, (who was living with him). That line was written as a filler on the way to demo the song to the 5th Dimension!

When she went to a family therapy, her therapist told her family they should all tell her they love her. Father said I love you, brother said I love you MOTHER would not say it! She apparently really favored her son over her talented, drummer vocalist GENIUS daughter. Still, 2024 and no voice tops hers!🤩

Karen Carpenter's singing voice is one of the most beautiful sounds ever made by a human being. The world has been missing this special lady since that dark winter day in 1983.

Karen considered herself as a drummer that sings, she really loved playing the drums.
