My dad, who was a musician, was getting burned out on music after the age of about 55. He saw EVERYONE in concert. When my mom saw he was getting into a "funk" (pardon the pun) she asked him who would ignite his passion again. He told her he only wanted to Grand Funk Railroad at Red Rock. My mom took him to see them at Red Rock and ,I truly believe, saved his life. He came back rejuvenated and loved music again. Never underestimate the power of music.

Three boys from Flint Michigan. I want to say that Donny was 20 (drummer) as well was Mel was 20 (bass) while Mark (lead guitar and singer) was only 19 at the time of this recording. You can hear the Detroit and midwest soul in what they play. Blue collar music that people can respect and love.

It bummed me that in the early 90s, when Nirvana hit big, and these guys were playing only county fairs and wineries by then, a local young female music *critic* used her column to trash GFR for the lead singer having short legs on stage, or some stupid GenX female take like that. I mean, Smells Like Teen Spirit was ground-breaking as reactionary neo-punk, but the GenX arrogance really was annoying. As if Nirvana invented great trio rock music. And I never quite got her goofy sexual take about leg size. WTF was that, lol.

The Beatles were the first to have a stadium concert ever. It was not even thought of before them because nobody could sell 60,000 seats. After that, other artists started having large crowds. GFR was in 1969, 1970. The Beatles did it in 1964! That is the difference. Nobody, but nobody comes close to what The Beatles ever did.

Yes…they were the pride of Flint, Michigan…. Once again….as Amber pointed out….you can’t create music like this with all the artistry and musical talent required in today’s environment with all the studio manipulation, auto-tune, etc. These guys poured their heart and soul into those vocals in this song….which is the definition of singing with “soul”. Mark Farmer sings with SOUL, and so does Don Brewer (the drummer).

I have seen drummers with five times more stuff around them that couldn't hold a candle to Don Brewer doing those power fills with what looked like a kit out of the Sears catalog. And the bass player ought to be chained up somewhere. Mark Farner on lead and vocals AND harmonica! What can you say? Legendary players doing legendary shit. The 60's and 70's were the best time in history to be young and on the scene.

My favorite band by far growing up as a teenager. Owned every album. Incredibly talented individuals...especially Mark Farner. Mark wrote 90% of the songs, he was the lead singer, played lead guitar, keyboards, started out early on playing bass, he plays drums and harmonica as well. One of the most talented musicians to ever walk on a stage. Mel was the best bass player in the world during GFR's heyday and Don was incredible on drums. They later added Craig Frost to the band on keyboards and he was outstanding as well. Great band... best live band in the world selling out everywhere from '69 to '75....Heartbreaker live 1974 would be a good next reaction.

I grew up in Michigan in the 60's and 70's too. Add Alice Cooper (back when it was actually a band and not just Vince) and iggy and the Stooges to your list. Those of us that grew up in that area at that time know that there was a railroad line that ran through central Michigan known as the Grand Trunk Railway. Pretty easy to see where Grand Funk Railroad got it's name!

Now you can see why they set the all time attendance record of people at RFK Stadium back in 1970 (?) and Shea Stadium where they broke the Beatles attendance record. They come from Michigan. I was lucky to sing this song in one group, Tyne Kyte ,and it has a lot of energy. They have always been a favorite of mine and the red album this song is from, was the best to me. Also, check out Mark's guitar. It was a cheap pawn shop guitar made by some import company, I think, and he had it all taped up and it had an aluminum neck but it worked fine for him with its no frills, raw sound. I wonder where that guitar is today? In a Hard Rock museum? It should be. Grand Funk should be in Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame.... NOW!!!!!

They are not in the Hall of Fame for political reasons. They had many complaints about their manager who was supposedly only giving them $300.00 a week to live on and many other complaints. GFRR got pissed at the manager months before his contract expired and fired him. The manager sued, and was awarded somewhere in the range of 40 million. You can make the best music in the world, but if you step on the wrong foot (music industry bigshot), your chances of getting in the Hall of Fame go out the window.
