Rob, I am new to serious photography and just bought the Olympus OM D 10 Mii. I love the camera and your videos have been extremely helpful in getting comfortable with this camera quickly. I had a friend comment that he couldn't believe how much I knew about the settings on this camera in such a short time. I told him it was Rob's videos that were the reason I had learned so much quickly. My camera came with the 14-42 kit lens and I had already decided to order the 40-150 you cover in this video when I saw it was only $99 and read the positive reviews. A few hours later I saw this video and I thought, "Great Rob says this is the next lens to buy and its the one I just ordered." Thanks for the great videos Rob. Keep it up.

Rob, you are absolutely correct about this lens. I own it and liked it so well that I gave one as a gift to my best friend who is just starting out in serious photography. He moved from shooting photos with his iPhone and thinking they were great to using an original OM-D EM5 that I had as a spare. He also has the pancake kit zoom. He now loves photography and is out all the time taking pictures, especially with the 40-150. It is so small and light that it fits in a fanny pack with the EM5 and the pancake lens and he has everything covered that he really needs. About a year ago, I found a great deal on a used 12-40 f2.8 PRO for $350 and bought it, selling a prime lens to pay for it. I haven't regretted it one bit, and love the build quality, the constant aperture, the weather sealing, and the manual focus clutch. It lives more or less full-time on my EM1. But honestly I struggle to see much difference optically between the PRO and the EZ zoom for most pictures under normal conditions although there is some. As you have noted, those differences can clearly be corrected in post-processing. What makes the PRO lens a piece of professional equipment is its performance under harsh conditions, less than ideal light, and its life expectancy when subjected to lots of handling. Also, a working professional would not have to spend as much time in post processing, and for him or her, time is money. These are simply not concerns for most of us. But, for anyone lusting after the 40-150mm 4-5.6's big brother, the 40-150mm 2.8 PRO, let me just say that I briefly went down that road, ordering one from Amazon for $1,100.00. I loved how it felt in the hands, how it functioned and focused, just about everything about it. If I were making my living with a telephoto lens I'd absolutely own it. But compared to the much smaller and lighter 40-150 kit zoom, I didn't use it that much nor did I love it to the tune of a grand extra over the little one, so I sent it back. But I can certainly see where a pro shooting weddings wouldn't want to show up with a $99 plastic zoom lens hanging off their camera, no matter how good it might be. I have owned a lot of photo gear over the last 50 years, and generally have found that the camera company engineers now have a very good idea of whom they are designing a particular lens for, and are working hard in most cases to provide what that target audience needs. This 40-150 4-5.6 is a great example of designing a product for the customer who will actually use it.

Thanks for taking the time to share your story. I couldn't agree more! I use the 12-40pro on my jobs, but rarely take it out for my casual photography - nor my em1.2. The em10.2 with the kit lenses are very close in performance to the top of the line versions and I don't worry about lugging the extra weight and expensive gear on hikes.

I love that there are guys like you who take the time to demonstrate how with a cheap lens you can get professional results. I take advantage of my bike rides to take photos, I don't have much space nor do I want to carry a lot of weight. With a 12-45 and this 40-150 I cover almost any focal length. I also use full frame and I have compared this light and plastic lens with Nikkor zooms and primes and I always end up thinking how can such a cheap lens work so well, there is not such a big difference in image quality. Perhaps the weakest point is a not so fast focusing but even so, it is still a surprising lens. Thanks Rob!

Another great vlog rob and i agree , i got my 40/150 with my olly 10 mk3 along with the 14/42. Kit lenses and as a keen amateur photographer i struggle to see any great advantage to justify the expense of a prime lense like the Olympus 25mm for me , although its a great lense and i dont dout professional photographer's will argue it is an essential part of your kit as a keen amateur im happy with these lenses for now. I even had another photographer comment on one of my photos asking " which prime lense did you use". When i said it was the 14/42 kit lense he got all puffy then saying perhaps it wasnt so good after all.? He was one of those photographers who got everything thats expensive canon this canon that i even think he had a canon hat ! but still can't get a decent shot. I've meet several of them. Lol.

It really is a great lens. At first I was disappointed in it but finally figured out the importance of a fast enough shutter speed. I was finally convinced when it tested it very favorably against some Nikon primes. Using 1/500 or faster is the key to 'sharpen' the lens. When coupled with auto iso you can get great shots. These Oly MFT lenses do so well wide open that they're a bit faster than the f stop rating would suggest

👍Well done, Rob. My takeaway is the subtle push to get folks more into image editing - the value editing can add to a modestly priced, but decent quality, lens. Editing lessons learned that way can entice folks to more editing, in general. That said, hope you are anticipating new Olympus products and will review them in timely vids. Nice macro and dog images, as well.

Thanks. I might include more editing in future videos because that is equally important in my opinion. I don't really have the budget for new cameras, like the pl9 and em10-iii. If Olympus decides to send me one for review, then I'll certainly post my thoughts on it.

Hi Mr Trek. I have a question about the 40-150 you are analysing.Why You mention it as a lens for beginners??? It is for it's poor aperture...??? @RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
Most beginners buy the camera with only one lens. I recommend this to be the next lens since it is cheap and very good. However, the lens is good for all levels of photography. The slow aperture is not the reason why I said it's for beginners. Thanks. -Rob

Some time ago I had an Oly E620 plus the usual kit lenses, 14-42 and 40-150. Both plastic lens mounts, which with the larger lens, because of the large amount of time I used it, soon wore out. The quick super glue fix didn't really last. I was fortunate to get a metal mount for it. I now have advanced to an EM10 MkII + 14-150 ll. I do not get as clear, sharp pics as I did with the old 4/3 lens. It's a great pity Oly didn't have the M4/3 40-150 with a metal mount - we're talking about a few dollars difference for a more robust lens.
@RobTrek5 жыл бұрын
Corporate penny pinchers probably forced the engineers to use a plastic mount. The 14-150 is of course a compromise. I found the 14-42 and 40-150 combo quite good.

This confirms what I already knew. I have this lens and it is wonderfully sharp and compares well with my 40-150 f2.8 pro. Unfortunately not all consumer zooms are quite so good. My main kit is full frame Nikon D750 and pro level lenses and a while ago I tried an Olympus OMD EM5 Mark 1 hoping to change to the micro four thirds system to cut down on size and weight of my kit but I have struggled to get the results I get with the Nikon kit which I am more familiar with. I have found your videos very informative and enjoyable and they have inspired me a bit to keep trying with the Olympus kit. Many thanks for the videos, please keep them coming.

Hi. I have the d750, but it collects dust now. May trade it for the z6 later. When I pair the d750 with my Ziess Distagon 35mm f/2 or my 70-200mm f/4, the images are magic! It's also amazing with my 20mm f/1.8 for astorphotography. So I understand exactly where you are coming from. I recently did a portrait comparison of my buddies d850 w/24-70 f/2.8 and my em1.2 w/12-40 pro and can tell you, aside from the megapixel difference, the images from my Olympus were on par. Depth of field is an uphill battle, but good composition and lighting can makeup for that. For portraits, I typically crush the ambient light with flash 1-2 stops for subject isolation. For landscapes, I take 3 pano shots to makeup for resolution. For action, I pre-focus and/or take more pictures. The m4/3 system will test your skills, but I think it's more rewarding. Check out Joe Edelman's channel if you haven't already. He shoots olympus now, mainly for the size/weight benefit and features. I'm not really a portrait guy like him, but I switched for the same reasons and have no regrets. I miss the easy shallow DOF of full frame, but not the size/weight.

I think the problem with the Z series is they will probably do like Sony and Canon and introduce big heavy lenses which I think defeats the objective of the mirrorless design. I have been lucky enough to borrow an Olympus 12-40 pro a few times and would really like one but here in the UK its £700 (about $900) so would be a big investment in a system I am not fully comfortable with yet. Its a long time since I saw Joe Edlemans channel - probably the video when he announced he was moving over to Olympus, but I think I'll start watching them, thanks

Hi Rob, just recently getting back into interchangeable lens photography after starting with an old Canon Ftb 35mm film camera way back in the early 70's, and have been using your instruction as my primary guide. I especially enjoyed your hints on converting this lens to a macro with the extension tubes - a great, timely tip as I have been looking at macro lenses (not cheap). I guess this same procedure would work on many other zooms, i.e. the Olympus 14-150mm f4-5.6 II ED MSC? Thanks!

"Best 2nd lens" is perhaps a bit emphatic. It really depends on what you intend to do. For learning the ins and out of photography, I still think a prime normal to semi-wide (25 to 17 in MFT) is the better choice. But really, if you only intend to have the best light kit for travel or be able to shoot a bit of outdoors and wildlife, this 40-150 can't be beaten. I'm really more a wide angle person, and I got that lens as a front body cap for a 2nd hand E-M5. I intended to sell it quickly, but I made the mistake to try it. Long story short, I've still got it and I used it a lot while on vacations. Perfect to snatch you kid activities at the beach or things like that, beautiful colours and contrast, super fast and super accurate AF. Superb value, they go 2nd hand for their nib price (well, you can't really shave off a $99 lens anyway).

I was torn about recommending a 1st lens, because I prefer primes myself. But I thought about when I was starting out, considering cost and versatility. Since the kit 14-42mm overlaps the primes, the added benefit of 150mm reach and macro (with tubes), I felt compelled to recommend this lens. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I've often wondered why this lens doesn't get more love. I guess it's because it's so cheap, people make assumptions about it. Most of the reviews do comment on it's sharpness though. It's a steal at $100. The other nice thing about this lens is how little it weighs. Yes it does have a plastic mount, and is mostly plastic or all plastic, but I used one for years and never broke it. To have the equivalent of a 300mm lens at just a few ounces makes this a great travel lens.

Another great video, Mr Rob, and I also loved the advice on the macro extension tubes. It turns out, unbeknownst to me, that I have a macro converter tube thingy...is this similar to an extension tube? I love my 40-150 lens, and now I'm even more excited about it. Looking very dapper in your pics too! PS I become almost suicidal when I try using photoshop...is Lighroom good enough to use on its own?!?
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As for the tube thingy, it depends if it goes between the camera and lens or if it goes on the end of the lens. If it goes on the end of the lens, I don't recommend it unless it is an Olympus brand for quality. I got by with lightroom for most stuff, but need photoshop mostly for my pro work. You should be fine with lightroom only, but photoshop lets you get very creative.

Hi Rob, Thx another good video. I bought the 40-150 when Oly had a sale and then the 75-300 when that was on sale. Both are great lenses for the money. The majority of the photos on the Oly website are taken with the Pro lenses by the Oly visionaries. It is good to see the comparison between the cheaper lenses with the Pro lenses for those of us on a tighter budget. I don't understand why Oly don't advertise the quality of the other lenses rather than push the Pro lenses as most of us cannot afford the Pro lenses. The 'budget' lenses are generally lighter which is great when travelling.

I wouldn't bother adapting the 18-400 since you can't use the built in vc and changing the focal length settings for the in camera ibis everytime you zoom is a pain. If turn ibis off and use the old reciprocal rule for shutter speed, it's fine. The 10-24 could be a sweet combo. Ibis is less important and 10mm is plenty wide!

Great job on this video Mr. Rob. I have been struggling with what my next lens should be since I bought the mark ii with the 14/42 kit lens and I also bought the 45mm prime lens and I love both of them. They both take fantastic pictures with great colors. I would say that the 45mm took a little sharper pic and easier to get shallow depth of field because I like shooting that way. However, I have one problem with each of the lens. With the 45mm prime lens, the perspective is not wide at all. The subject appears much closer when using this lens and it won't focus if I'm standing within 50cm from the subject which could be annoying sometimes. With the 14/42 I find it still not wide enough because sometimes I try to take landscape (a lake). It can only get about 2/3 of the lake in the frame and the color is a little dimmer. I have been wondering if I should get the 40-150 lens. Would you say it is a good one to fill in the gaps i am having with the two current lens? And if you don't mind, could you pls tell me what macro extention tube that you used in this video?
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
You should get the wide angle adapter for your 14-42 kit lens unless it is the one with the power zoom. Get the Olympus brand only. www.getolympus.com/us/en/accessories/lenses/wide-converter-wcon-p01.html The extension tubes will solve your problem with the 45mm so you can get much closer but you won't be able to focus far away. I don't have this lens so I can't tell you exactly. Here is the link to the extension tubes I use. Get the fotga brand ebay.to/2MxKCsd A good landscape lens is the 9-18mm from Olympus. A good macro lens is the 60mm f/2.8. These two lenses will be the best solution is money is no problem.
@whakabuti6 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget that M43 cameras like the MK II have a crop factor of 2 Times. Therefore your 45mm is effectively a 90mm! If you’re looking for a wide lens look at the 17mm which is therefore 17 x 2 = 34mm.
@guyracine79986 жыл бұрын
Hanlu Ying Hi there. If you want to capture a wider angle for your shots, you need a wide angle. The 40-150 is the opposite, a telephoto. That lens was on my short list between the 12mm f/2.0 and 15mm f/1.7. I ended up with the 12mm f/2.0 because in video, the panasonic lenses didn't focus as fast on my olympus bodies. I still might pick one up because it is very cheap with great IQ. Thanks!

I concur. This is really a great lens. My parents had bought a 2 lens kit GF2 way back when it was brand new, and this lens was included. I picked it someday to play around (I was rather happy with my P20/1.7 at the time), and I was floored by this tiny lump of plastic. To the point I've since then bought one, and sold the P20 in favour of the P25/1.7.
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm surprised you dropped the 20mm for this 14mm. I love the pancake lenses from Panasonic. I'd buy them if it were not for the slower focus in video on Olympus bodies. Still, the 20mm and 14mm are compelling because they are in the spirit of m4/3 compact size and quality IQ.
@ordinosaurs6 жыл бұрын
As I said I prefer wide~ish FoV, and I don't do video. But anyway, the 14 is rather fast to AF unlike the 20 which misses the focus a lot. And as my eyesight is failing the older I get, I really need a reliable AF now. So after head to head testing, I found the P25 to be very fast, and very sharp if you take care of the focus shift below f/5.6. It's also inexpensive. All said, you can have a P14 and a P25 for the selling price a the P20 2nd hand alone. Honestly, the P20 was the best thing in MFT in 2009, but the hype around this lens is ludicrous today. But it's pocketable, which is still convenient.
