The feature that is on the EM10 Mark ii that I miss on the EM5 Mk iii is the magnifier that you can use on video, that's like a 3 or 4x teleconverer and allows you to switch to a close up type shot instantly during filming. Not a pro feature but just a lot of fun. Everything else, the EM5iii has a lot of extra things and infinitely better video focusing. The autofocus on my EM10 ii cameras seems to work on videos only on the motion jpegs. I have to use manual focus clutch to film MOV files.

A genuinely informative video. I was really surprised how little difference there is between the pictures for the OMD 10 mark 2 and the OMD 5 mark 3 under "normal" conditions. Accept that the mark 3 has weatherproofing, much better CAF and insane IBIS but no-one has actually done such a comparison for every day conditions (and I include waterfalls where my preference is 1/6 to 1/8 second easily possible hand held for OMD 10). Unlike other commentators, I have 2 x mint Pen F's recently purchased. Have seen your comparison b/w 47 1.7 and Pro glass competitor. Yes, those Mustang images looked great with both lens. However that focal length, ? semi portrait, a little limited in potential use for me. The Pro 17 or 25, could see a deal of use. Given the Olympus reputation for superb glass quality, may in fact purchase one of those Pro lens somewhere down the road. Believe the Pen F is all the Olympus camera I need. Paid 50% of new Australian price for the 2 as new bodies I purchased. One will permanently wear the,again, barely used 12-40 2.8 I purchased as a combo. Though I have a Pen F, am still thinking of a more standard body, just for occasional use. The shutter speed advantage is not all that important, as our children are way past sports and even when playing sport, I found 1/4000 than enough to freeze the action. Also, sometimes wanted a degree of controlled blur to emphasise movement. More into people, objects, semi street and landscape now. However, some of the improvements you mentioned, unless the new body is all plastic - a total deal breaker for me- could see the III appeal, subject to price.
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын

Ah, there's a feature I find really interesting in the E-M5 MkIII - the Remote Connector! Having a cable release thread in the Pen F was one reason for me to by it (I have lots of traditional cable releases lying around and in my camera bags), but the 2.5 mm connector is the second best thing (I do have a long remote cable that uses this connector and that I could instantly plug into this camera). For most of the rest, I would still rather look out for a used E-M1 MkII.

The EM5 III is a good step upwards in focusing and sensor from the previous, but not enough for me to upgrade from my baseline Olympus. If a person bought faster and sharper lenses, it may improve their results a tad. I am thinking I will always have an APS-C or add a FF in the future. Currently I have a Nikon D3500 and like its dynamic range / low light shooting a bit more than using my Oly and Panny in lower light situations, and for landscapes - longer shots. I do like the MFT cameras for street shooting, and any quick shooting required, such as parties. If paying over a grand for a camera, I will be going with Fujifilm, Nikon, or even Sony ( not liking some things about Sony, but great dynamic range, and focus accuracy ) with questionable ergonomics, and kit lenses. I think Fujifilm X-Tran may no longer be a needed processor these days, but the camera looks great, and Fujinon lenses are said to be great. The Nikon Z50 looks great for handling, though limited in native lenses. My current D3500 has these tiny little red dot which indicates the focus area - not liking that, and the limited 11 points of focus, but the DSLR is taking wonderful photos. I am not shooting video, so all the talk about better video quality I don't bother with. Simple -- simple is good. Top of the line, including Olympus and Panasonic have so many things of which one pays for, they best be using them, or it is wasted money. I will say for looks, that PEN F is the looker or most all cameras. Even my little PL-8 is so lovable, while being solid and simple in use. Great for the street, as is my Panasonic GX85. I just don't see a slight step or even a good step up in MFT as being enough, so it is adding lenses to MFT, or buying step up or two in sensor sized cameras in my future. -Loren these are shots taken with my three cameras: lorenschwiderski.smugmug.com/

I made the same decision and bought a 12-40/2.8 Pro lens instead! Way too many people are fixated with megapixels. I have an E-PM1 (12 MP), E-M10 Mk II, Panasonic GX-80 (16MP) and a Nikon D750 (24MP), and to be brutally honest I used my D750 only around 5% of the time. I do not do any noise reduction on my E-M10 except in some night images and the IQ is virtually identical to my D750 even for images up to 16x20" size. Indeed, I still use my old E-PM1 more than my D750! Fitted with a 14/2.5 Pana, it is so small I can take great street photographs in London and no one bats an eyelid! They just think that I am a pesky tourist. Most of my subjects even pose for me when I ask them!

In others words how it perfoms the OMD5iii vs GX9. B. I'm looking for all around zoom. I love my primes and the 12-32 lumix is limited. What do you think about oly 14-150 or 14-140 lumix? Thank you and keep your channel as simple as it is now. I'm bored of GAS syndrom and new technologies of cameras.
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I don't have a gx9 so can't speak to overall performance but will point out a couple of things. The OMD5iii has a mic jack, better image stabilization, and most likely better continuous autofocus (guessing here). It also has a faster high speed shutter and pro capture. As for lenses, it depends which camera you use most. Buy Olympus lenses for Olympus cameras and Panasonic for Panasonic. The lenses from both companies are excellent. The 12-32 is excellent and I would steer you towards a 40-150mm rather than the 14-150mm. That said, getting a 14-150mm and carrying a couple of primes may be more desirable, something I'm considering myself.

Rob, seemingly as usual, another " late" comment. The reason for this is that I am looking for another body, apart from my Pen F. Many thanks for such a thorough and practical comparison. Have also viewed the video being the battle between the various 20 mp bodies. Most of those, certainly the pro version bodies are of no interest or relevance to what I do and the size of bodies rules out a large part of the attraction of the mft system. Whilst there is clearly an ongoing need for improvement to my photography skills, some of features in the EM 5 Mk 111 seem to make it an appealing, if more expensive upgrade choice. The increased IBIS, to my mind, really significant. Also, the focussing,with phase detect seems to be a really significant step up. Sensor size is rather irrelevant. Given the time that has passed since the comparison, have your views altered? Many thanks.
@RobTrek3 жыл бұрын
Nothing has changed since this comparison. I think you'll really like the E-M5 Mark III if you want better AF for sports/action and 4k video. The ibis is noticeably better in video. The AF is noticeably better in C-AF. AF Tracking is still a mess. S-AF is about the same.

@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
Currently it is the biggest handicap for custom mode users like you and me. What I do is awkward, but after setting up C1, I turn the mode dial to "A" and set the camera up with other settings, then turn the mode dial between "A" and "C". Usually I have "C" saved with art bracketing, and "A" setup for Monochrome with highlight/shadow adjustments. Hopefully olympus will let us assign C2 and C3 to the mode dial or function buttons in a firmware update.

@hotjazzbaby4 жыл бұрын
Try sharpening with "Topaz AI" Sharpen. You will be amazed.
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mike. I don't have a 300mm f/4, so can't say how it will perform on the EM10ii. Let's assume that the focusing hit rate will be the same. However, shooting at f/4 instead of f/6.7 can't be understated. Being able to shoot a lower ISO and/or higher shutter speeds is critical. Also, the sharpness of the 300mm is amazing. The 75-300mm is just average or below average sharpness compared to any other lens. Compound that with high ISO and it becomes very challenging in anything but the best conditions. I can tell you paring the 75-300 with the EM1ii or EM5iii does result in a higher focus hit rate, but most of that is wasted on high iso and low sharpness. So my suggestion would be get the lens, not a new body.

Since the price is quite tempting for an new EM5 ii (where used unit cost sligtly less than that), I am having hard time to decide should I save up more for EM5 III (which is not cheap) or just bite the bullet and get EM5 II for now and keep the spare cash for lens which I am more than happy to spend my money on. Frankly speaking the $$ discount (USD1135 vs USD480) is the main reason why I was considering upgrading it to EM5 II since it seems to improved versus the original EM5 (okay, auto-focus is not one of it and I am fine with that). Since you have experience for both EM5 II and EM5 II as well as EM10 II. Do you reckon it is good call to stick go all way to EM5 iii or just settle down with EM5 II as like you have mentioned in one your video that the MKII series is where Oly really set the bar quite high and they realized and try fix it by dumb down in order to differentiate among the MKIII siblings (eg in another youtuber noted that certain function were previously present were removed in MKiii.) My apologies if it is too long winded for you to understand.

Thanks, Michael. I have a speedbooster somewhere. Don't use it much but will do a video on adapting lenses. I have an older one I made that you can check out.

@@RobTrek I just received a $80 Viltrox speedbooster 0.71 and just tried it out on my Tamron lenses for Nikon and it was surprisingly easy to use and worked well. Couldn't get the focus peeking to work but the magnification feature worked well and assisted the focus. Pictures seemed nice with my F2.8 28 - 75. Nikon does not support autofocus with an adapter, but I think Cannon lenses do. Would love to here your take on this.

@@RobTrek Thanks so much Rob! Apparently Cannon lenses can have electronic control with an inexpensive adapter. A $50 50 mm f1.8 Yagnua for Cannon lens would be f1.3 on m4/3. That would be nice if worked.

friend how are you ... please I would like your help, I am not pro, but if demanding pixel, and sold my G85 just because it is more avocado to the video despite being great, in high isos it was more complicated than my old em10 m1 ... I have money for a sony a7 28 70 kit, olympus em10 markii with 12 40 pro ... what would you advise me? ... my priority is good iso up to 6400, and a decent approach. greetings from southern chile
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
Sony will give you better high iso performance. You will need a better lens than the 28-70 to get the most out of that camera. Look for lenses f/2.8 or faster and the high iso will be cleaner than the Olympus.

@@cristianfuentes69 I would skip on the A7 maybe go A7II or better yet A7III Check out the lenses you will need first. And be SURE to to a search of reviews on Sony lenses, some are not so hot. Be sure the lenses and camera can be had the price you wish for. Sony has great focusing. Look at reviews to see if the rest qualities are the best. The good, the bad, the ugly ;) Some good Zeiss and Tamron lenses, I think???

Just remember that you will suffer with form factor(size) and weight,especially the much bigger and heavier lenses.

Rob, in stabiization what about the omd m10 mark iii? The ibis is the same as the one in the omd m10 mark ii? Thanks!!!!!!

Just off topic for a sec...I'm wondering is there a way to adapt MY e510 lens to my em-10 mark two camera?
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
Olympus made the mmf-2 and mmf-3 adapters (now discontinued). There are also 3rd party adapters but reviews say they are low quality. Fine for smaller lenses, but will break with larger lenses like the 70-300mm. This is one of them amzn.to/2tQvVfu I don't own any 4/3 lenses, so can't speak to how well the lenses perform on an em10ii.

@@RobTrek Rob i have the olympus 9-18mm 4/3 lens and use it on my em10 mk2. No really big problems. Images are very very crisp and nice colours etc but its just the autofocus that is really slooooww. But the lens is very well build also. Must say,with price of the newer olympys 9-18mm mft lens(also much smaller a lighter) used on the ebay,it could be a better offer at this time. Well there is the wide pro lens but then you need the budget for that and alsohave a spesific need for such a pro lens

According to robin wong review the em5iii have more than a stop of dynamic range and almost 2 stop difference in high iso. What your comments on this?
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
I think that is a bit ambitious. Some of the iso improvements only apply to jpg as stated by Olympus with the firmware update to 3.0 on the em1ii. Dynamic range is a tricky measure and requires tools I don't have to test with any precision.

Nice work Rob. I own an e-M1 Mark i and was thinking to upgrade to e-M1 Mark ii. After watching this video, just wondering how much more I would get with the mark ii? Your thoughts?
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
I think most of the benefits in the Mark II over the Mark I is the C-AF and shutter speeds and video quality. So if you want to do more sports/action photograhy or get into video, the Mark II makes sense. Otherwise the Mark I is an excellent stills camera.

With IBIS, image stabilised lens are not required except for the longer telephoto lenses because IBIS is less effective than IS-lenses. That's the reason why Olympus do not offer stabilised lenses in the wide to normal tele range.
@RobTrek4 жыл бұрын
As others have said, lens based stabilization is more effective at the long focal lengths. Combined with IBIS, even better.
