I saw Hitchcock start the show all alone with his interpretation of this very brilliant song in my hometown Oslo yesterday. It was moving, stunning, you name it. People actually totally shut up those minutes it lasted - the famous needle could have dropped and would have been heard thru the music. It was just fantastic, pure and simple. Wish I had a tape of it.

I've got to admit that the last thing I expected to see when clicking on Robyn Hitchcock covering a Bob Dylan song was Billy Bragg doing the intro! Awesome!

I remember seeing Billy Bragg open for Robyn Hitchcock in Philly in the early 90's. Fantastic night. Also remember seeing both of them playing at Mountain Stage in 1991? with R.E M. and Denis Bonet....that was an unforgettable road trip!

Indeed, these guys know what this song needs - very well done!! Both vocally, timing, rythm and guitar play - the melancholy of the mandolin underlines the essence of this Bob topper excellent.

JPJ has been into mandolin for a while now. The past several years he's been playing it and jamming with a lot of bands. I saw him at Bonnaroo playing with like 5 different bands.

"Behind every beautiful thing there's always some kind of pain." Truer words were never spoken. That line sounds even more poignant channeled through Robyn's supple, purring voice than in the overproduced original.

Why is it that sometimes the words of a songwriter hit home more when you hear them sideways from someone else?

Was JPJ playing a mandolin or a mandocello?
@slowuncle12 жыл бұрын
Help! JPJ carries a mandocello AND a mandolin onto & off the stage, but evidently, the song on which he uses the mandocello has been clipped here---anybody know what song that might be??

@warmjet ?? wha?? can you be specific about that? I know "that's why there's chocolate *and* vanilla," but I'm still curious what offends you about it. I'm genuinely interested, I'm not flaming. I'd give a JJ Cale cover a listen too.
