Note: After the solo, I forgot to mention to go back to the middle position. For the more 'quacky' sound at the end, turn the neck vol to 10. 0:28 - General explanation 0:52 - Drum intro 1:37 - How to start the guitar riff 2:13 - Basic riff 4:04 - Song structure 5:34 - Main riff with fills 8:39 - Verse 1 11:29 - Verse 2 12:39 - Pre-solo 13:48 - Solo 21:38 - Verse 3 22:32 - Verse 4 25:02 - Ending

Great playing on the video, appreciate the instruction and help however, it would be more beneficial to the viewer if you would hold your guitar square with the camera instead of on an angle...

Andre: I might be wrong, but check the Pre Solo from the film again... I think that is "Middle Position" too...Jimmy changes to Bridge Position ( T Top pickup) only for the Actual solo.? On my Guitar I seem to get the best Rhythm sound in the middle position of course , but with a tiny bit more treble balance.. I roll neck pickup off to about 8... ( That's just my guitar) Thanks for the lesson.. It helped me with those open pull offs at the start of the solo. ..I replicate TSRTS tones on my channel if you are interested..I don't play as well as you but get an accurate 1973 tone ..Cheers

Hi! Sorry for taking too long to reply. Last months have been a bit hectic for me. I watched it again and Page clearly hits the toggle switch at 1:39 to 1:40 (using the first video that comes up in the YT search by OLD TAPES) which is consistent with what I'm doing in this video, at least it looks to be so and assuming the video and audio actually match for that part of the concert (it looks like it is though). But Page did play that whole section in the middle position in 1975 and 1979 from what I can see/hear, so I think you could do it both ways really. Yes I have me volumes set about the same, a bit less neck volume, bridge full up when in the middle pos
@bryanwilliams3665
@bryanwilliams3665 2 жыл бұрын
@@KozumaHeiji Yes ! you are right .Bridge position pre solo TSRTS.. Knebworth 1979 vid clip pre solo is mid position ( very clear footage).. so like say ,he must have changed it a bit night to night..I've been studying his tone for years .My vids have sold quite a few Jimmy Page pickup sets.. The neck PUP was hard to voice correctly.Its a very strange PAF.
@KozumaHeiji
@KozumaHeiji 2 жыл бұрын
@@bryanwilliams3665 yep he always changes small things like that from night to night. Imo both ways are fine
@KozumaHeiji
@KozumaHeiji 2 жыл бұрын
@@bryanwilliams3665 btw since you mentioned the neck pickup what do you reckon for the magnet? A2, A5? I currently prefer A5 neck for Page stuff but I keep changing my mind
@bryanwilliams3665
@bryanwilliams3665 2 жыл бұрын
@@KozumaHeijiHaha!..You have a good ear!..There is much sonic evidence for it being an A2..BUT modern A2s generally are too Dark and Congested Sounding I've found ..The A5 is too Wooly in the Bass and too "Ice Picky" in the Treble... The closest Magnet to a Vintage A2 is a Roughcast UOA5 (Unoriented A5)..That will put you in the middle ground between your A2 and A5..Then it needs to be Degaussed to bring out the 'Wood Sound' .Pages neck PAF was electrically Hot ( DCR) but magnetically very weak (Strange Specs)

I believe he plays the intial riffs picking on the C# going up and then he picks on the C before the A. Instead of picking on the C everytime on the move up of the riff. Cheers!
@KozumaHeiji
@KozumaHeiji 2 жыл бұрын
I used to play it like that but every vid I watched of Page playing this I only ever see him hit the A string with his middle finger. If you find any video or timestamp where you can see a close up let me know. I tried looking for it but I never found anything conclusive so far. Ultimately I think it doesn't matter that much since I'm bending the C into C# so the end result is the same technically. Both ways are fine in my book. This is just how I think he plays it at least...
@KozumaHeiji
@KozumaHeiji 2 жыл бұрын
To me it's the other way around. I just can't un-hear the bend happening on both instances of the riff. The best shot I could find to back my case is this one with the Foo Fightera at 1:47. The camera catches his at just the right angle to see that his ring finger is nowhere near the A string, just before the solo. At 1:38 on the D riff it's less obvious but if you pause/unpause you can see him bending the D string with his middle finger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZOxh3yGdqZ1ndk Of course this is YEARS later but imo it's still valid to some extent - I mean he can play it like that too.
@joaobrandi
@joaobrandi 2 жыл бұрын
@@KozumaHeiji I hear you, it’s a tough one for sure. Hearing the isolated tracks from the 70’s I can hear the C# and not the bend to C#. Maybe sometime with the answer will appear here. 🙌🏻✌🏻🎶 I believe both ways work as well.
@KozumaHeiji
@KozumaHeiji 2 жыл бұрын
@@joaobrandi another thing is that I don't think that the C note is emphasized at all. It's almost a pre-bend here, really quick - from "almost C#" to "C#", at which point it's almost impossible to really tell...
@joaobrandi
@joaobrandi 2 жыл бұрын
@@KozumaHeiji I was looking at the official complete studio recordings tabs and it did indicates that he does uses the C#. Unfortunately I can reply with a picture but take a look. Cheers.

Great Instruction Video! Spot on!! .. For TSRTS Tone Chasers, I replicate the tone on my channel.. Briefly , you need a 'Low Wind " 7.5k T Top (Bridge Pickup) and an "Overwound " Circa 8.6k Alnico 2 (Neck Pickup) set REALLY Low to avoid Mud. It's all about getting the Middle "Hollow Chirp" sound which you won't get with a 'Conventional' weaker neck/hotter bridge. You can't get the Page tone with a "Factory Les Paul"

Les Paul, T top style bridge pickup, crunchy amp (in this case a 50 Plexi copy. Amplitube does it too), Celestion loaded cab (can be real or Impulse response). Optional Echoplex pre amp pedal (ClinchFX EP-PRE, etc), but most importantly practice as much as you can. Good luck!
