Glad you enjoyed it 55, I had to be a bit conservative with this one to make sure most of the rock was left on the road as they want to use it for erosion control works near by.

3:10 is that a vacuum system on the drill that’s pulling out the cuttings? Do you collect the cuttings? Are they large enough to use for hole stemming?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 2 жыл бұрын
The cuttings are pushed out of the hole by the flushing air that travels down the hole in the middle of the drill rod, when they reach the top of the hole the vac system sucks them up. The big bits land in the blue cyclone separator and the very fines in the plastic bag on the bottom of the vac. If you were to sieve the contents of the separator there would be some pieces big enough to use as stemming. Nasty stuff to handle though, best left alone.

BTW, I've often wondered what happens when you drill through the bottom of the rock. You mentioned drilling through to clay in the bottom of the rock. You said something about filling the bottom of the hole, I'm assuming to keep the explosive within the rock. What do you fill the bottom with? Does the filler keep the explosion from blowing out the bottom or the rock?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast

Yes, I use the same material that I would stem (back fill above the explosive). It is largely successful most of the time Tim.

We shoot our rock at the quarry uncovered and if a hole blows out its really exciting. The resident across the highway was not thrilled at all when the rock ended up in the living room. They do a better job of packing the stemming and the distance from the top of the hole and where the change is placed is farther than before. This makes my job a little harder since we end up with more boulders that don't fit in the crusher and I have to sort them out.

When you have drilled the rock if you go all the way through! Do you have to partially plug the hole so the force doesn’t go down into the ground. Also do you stagger the blast or does it fire off all at once in the rock.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you drill through and you don't want to waste all of your blast energy you would use some screened crushed rock stemming material to back fill the hole a little way before loading the charge. Best results are obtained when the holes are time spaced by a few milliseconds, this improves the fragmentation a lot and decreases the felt ground vibration.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast I blew a similar sized granite boulder off of a ski area in the mid 90,s. The resort was tired of kids breaking legs from using it as a ski jump. Took me 20 minutes a hole to drill for about 18 holes 6' deep. The boulder was relieved on three sides and unjointed. I went with a .5 powder factor. It shattered like glass. Wish I had taken video. I hate short holes, had to fire a pattern of them on a 3' deep section of limestone cap rock. Glad I fired a test shot first because they all fired down and I had to go shallow for the rest of the pattern. Cheers

HI dave great videos was looking at buying a CP69 new rock drill, i currently have a Makita AVT drilling to depths of 450mm and the drilll sometimes kicks, i see you standing on yours and wondered if they kick as bad??
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 10 ай бұрын
OK... First up I can highly recommend the CP69, this is a Mans drill. Air drills do not jam and tear your arms of in the same manner as large electric drills, this is rarely an issue, only time it can get a bit tricky is when drilling versicular basalt (lots of big air bubbles in it) and it can jam occasionally. Just buy it, you won't look back. Put a bit of thought into how you will manage the stone dust hazzard please, this stuff can kill you!

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast thanks Dave appreciate the feedback, purchased the drill and a second hand compressor the day, got a Kango hammer chucked in also, next is the demolition side, but living on an island its only ever used in quarry's, but i seen no reason to use it for opening house foundations I use water to cool the bit and prevent dust from the rock when using the electric drill.the hose is near but not always water handy in the remoter parts of the job Currently doing a garage and had a 14tonner in with a pecker, pecking for 14 days at a cost £8000, and normally here we dont build on rock unless the hole footprint is on the rock, so we dig down to the hard clay and then compact layer, and build of that! i live on the remote part of the Western Isles of Scotland so the rock is pretty tough!....

Is there any type of difference with the explosives for focusing the blow outwards or down or anything or are they all the same? That may be a dumb question but I wasnt sure, I'm just a toolmaker/machinest so I don't know anything about what you do but it's really awesome to watch!

Hi Bradley, all of the explosives used in this type of work are very similar, there is some variation in strength and velocity of detonation that allow tailoring to specific needs. Explosives that focus there energy in one direction are mainly used in steel cutting for structure demolition. Thanks for watching.

Nice work Dave! Seeing as I am a Blues Brother from the Richmond Valhalla Cinema and then the Westgarth Cinema back in the 80s and the early 90s, your start to the video took me way back much further than it should have. Carrie Fisher would have appreciated your efforts with the rocks as she had this thing about trying to blow up Joliet Jake for leaving her standing at the altar on her wedding day. Some chicks just won't let things go! Mark from Melbourne Australia Did you see my note about the 4x4 shop to check out? Grange Rd Fairfield, and I know you know where Fairfield is!

@demolitiondavedrillandblast

Some of the busted up rock from this shot was used to build culvert ends just down the road. The part of the road that goes around the rock is all built on soft fill and as such you cannot drive a truck carrying a 35 Tonne bulldozer on it, When the rock is removed the road will all be on secure ground. This was a forest road upgrade job paid by the government. Thanks for watching Johnny

What is the reason for the charges going off sequentially with a small delay in-between, as opposed to all at the same time? Does it just make less mess, or does it actually help break the rock better?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 2 жыл бұрын
Good question Matt. The small delay in-between gives much better fragmentation for the same size hole spacing and charge mass, when all the holes fire together as when fired using det cord you get big blocky pieces. If the big rock with the deep holes was configured this way the yield would have had a lot of oversize and considering that they wanted to use some of the stone this method was not desirable. Thanks for watching.

8 out of 10 on TC patented "that blowed up real good" scale. (And for those not in the know, one must use....uhh..special material and implosion, to break the 8 point barrier). Extra style points for the excellent shatter and throw, not to mention the bonus where you all but paved that forest road with the rubble. Loved those slo-mo shots - that last one, I though we were going to see a Go Pro getting knocked over, but that big chunk turned last minute. The ripping sound on that shot....oh yeah.
