3:10 is that a vacuum system on the drill that’s pulling out the cuttings? Do you collect the cuttings? Are they large enough to use for hole stemming?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
The cuttings are pushed out of the hole by the flushing air that travels down the hole in the middle of the drill rod, when they reach the top of the hole the vac system sucks them up. The big bits land in the blue cyclone separator and the very fines in the plastic bag on the bottom of the vac. If you were to sieve the contents of the separator there would be some pieces big enough to use as stemming. Nasty stuff to handle though, best left alone.

BTW, I've often wondered what happens when you drill through the bottom of the rock. You mentioned drilling through to clay in the bottom of the rock. You said something about filling the bottom of the hole, I'm assuming to keep the explosive within the rock. What do you fill the bottom with? Does the filler keep the explosion from blowing out the bottom or the rock?

We shoot our rock at the quarry uncovered and if a hole blows out its really exciting. The resident across the highway was not thrilled at all when the rock ended up in the living room. They do a better job of packing the stemming and the distance from the top of the hole and where the change is placed is farther than before. This makes my job a little harder since we end up with more boulders that don't fit in the crusher and I have to sort them out.

When you have drilled the rock if you go all the way through! Do you have to partially plug the hole so the force doesn’t go down into the ground. Also do you stagger the blast or does it fire off all at once in the rock.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you drill through and you don't want to waste all of your blast energy you would use some screened crushed rock stemming material to back fill the hole a little way before loading the charge. Best results are obtained when the holes are time spaced by a few milliseconds, this improves the fragmentation a lot and decreases the felt ground vibration.

@demolitiondavedrillandblast10 ай бұрын
OK... First up I can highly recommend the CP69, this is a Mans drill. Air drills do not jam and tear your arms of in the same manner as large electric drills, this is rarely an issue, only time it can get a bit tricky is when drilling versicular basalt (lots of big air bubbles in it) and it can jam occasionally. Just buy it, you won't look back. Put a bit of thought into how you will manage the stone dust hazzard please, this stuff can kill you!

I would have loved to see an "after" picture. What do you do with all that displaced stone? Who pays you to blow stuff up? What was the reason for blowing the rocks up?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Some of the busted up rock from this shot was used to build culvert ends just down the road. The part of the road that goes around the rock is all built on soft fill and as such you cannot drive a truck carrying a 35 Tonne bulldozer on it, When the rock is removed the road will all be on secure ground. This was a forest road upgrade job paid by the government. Thanks for watching Johnny

Is it possible to blow a 30' diameter hole in a solid rock cliff wall without damaging the surrounding rock?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Short answer no. Depending on how deep you need to go there are people that could diamond core drill you a perfect 30' hole.
@steveciarico98242 жыл бұрын
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast yeah that's what I kind of thought. I have some property that has a 1 billion year old lava flow on it. It's 60 feet thick, about 2 miles wide and roughly a 100 miles long. I own 40 acres of it. I want to hollow out part of it, about 5000 square feet for a home.

You could Stitch drill the perimeter of the circle kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKOXiX6mdraKipI and blast out the remaining center, provided you have a reasonably flat face to work with.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast ok thanks for the info. I'm going to buy the equipment and do it myself. I've been in construction 35 years so no worries. Happy New Year!!

when you have such a long distance to a job (6.5 hrs) do you charge a travel fee? If so, do you charge by the hour or by the mile? Thanks!
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Heck yeah Dan, 6 Hours to get to our works camp and then an hour and a half on the dirt to get to the job. Charged by the hour.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast I typically charge $100/HR (plus cost of supplies) US to drill and fill---As I am just getting started in my area and trying to get jobs. Without getting too personal... what have you found to be "acceptable" for a travel fee and still get the job? Thanks!

Correct, yesterday we had the coldest Summer day on record. this time of year the water trucks on construction sites are starting to get busy keeping the dust down... at the moment getting bogged is an ongoing nuisance.

What is the reason for the charges going off sequentially with a small delay in-between, as opposed to all at the same time? Does it just make less mess, or does it actually help break the rock better?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Good question Matt. The small delay in-between gives much better fragmentation for the same size hole spacing and charge mass, when all the holes fire together as when fired using det cord you get big blocky pieces. If the big rock with the deep holes was configured this way the yield would have had a lot of oversize and considering that they wanted to use some of the stone this method was not desirable. Thanks for watching.

8 out of 10 on TC patented "that blowed up real good" scale. (And for those not in the know, one must use....uhh..special material and implosion, to break the 8 point barrier). Extra style points for the excellent shatter and throw, not to mention the bonus where you all but paved that forest road with the rubble. Loved those slo-mo shots - that last one, I though we were going to see a Go Pro getting knocked over, but that big chunk turned last minute. The ripping sound on that shot....oh yeah. Extra humor points for the wonderful intro homage to the Blues Brothers.
