Not really, you get the occasional xenolith and Dykes. Most of the stuff that I get to blast in really hard igneous rocks and as such pretty boring. Often find tiny white crystals in vesicular basalt though.

It would be, for added interest and education to detail the blast's parameters. Loading density, type of explosive. One blast was delayed the other was not, what was the reasoning? I'm curious about pricing. What would a job like that be billed out at, ballpark? minus the peripherals such as travel expenditures.

Some of the busted up rock from this shot was used to build culvert ends just down the road. The part of the road that goes around the rock is all built on soft fill and as such you cannot drive a truck carrying a 35 Tonne bulldozer on it, When the rock is removed the road will all be on secure ground. This was a forest road upgrade job paid by the government. Thanks for watching Johnny

I deliberately don't say or show too much about the medicine that goes in the holes Alan and I have a few competitors out there that are really clueless about the technical side of it all. I know they all watch this and I don't need them to be getting any smarter. There was Two buckets, the small one had a granular explosive substance and the larger bucket had screened crushed rock that is ideal for back filling the blast holes - the area in the hole above the explosive charge. Thanks for watching.

ELWOOD: This was a bargain. I picked it up at the Mount Prospect city police auction last spring. It's an old Mount Prospect police car! They were practically givin' 'em away. [Mt Prospect is a NW suburb of Chicago.] JAKE: Well, thank YOU pal! The day I get out of prison, my own brother picks me up in a police car. [Fog horn] ELWOOD: You don't like it? JAKE: No, I don't like it. [Elwood jumps the drawbridge.] JAKE: This car's got a lot of pickup. ELWOOD: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires. Cop suspension. Cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. Whaddaya say? Is it the new Bluesmobile or what? [Jake lights cigarette and throws the lighter out the window.] JAKE: Fix the cigarette lighter. Elwood: "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses." Jake: "Hit it."

We shoot our rock at the quarry uncovered and if a hole blows out its really exciting. The resident across the highway was not thrilled at all when the rock ended up in the living room. They do a better job of packing the stemming and the distance from the top of the hole and where the change is placed is farther than before. This makes my job a little harder since we end up with more boulders that don't fit in the crusher and I have to sort them out.

3:10 is that a vacuum system on the drill that’s pulling out the cuttings? Do you collect the cuttings? Are they large enough to use for hole stemming?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
The cuttings are pushed out of the hole by the flushing air that travels down the hole in the middle of the drill rod, when they reach the top of the hole the vac system sucks them up. The big bits land in the blue cyclone separator and the very fines in the plastic bag on the bottom of the vac. If you were to sieve the contents of the separator there would be some pieces big enough to use as stemming. Nasty stuff to handle though, best left alone.

BTW, I've often wondered what happens when you drill through the bottom of the rock. You mentioned drilling through to clay in the bottom of the rock. You said something about filling the bottom of the hole, I'm assuming to keep the explosive within the rock. What do you fill the bottom with? Does the filler keep the explosion from blowing out the bottom or the rock?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
Yes, I use the same material that I would stem (back fill above the explosive). It is largely successful most of the time Tim.
@villagelightsmith4375
@villagelightsmith4375 Жыл бұрын
Before a legislator OR an administrative rule maker sets hand to keyboard about the use of explosives they should be REQUIRED to take a simple college course on Civil Engineering/Explosives that includes field practicum. Such courses should include a tiny bit of the higher math involved, but remain focused on the Art and Practice, without ignoring the Science. There is plenty of room for energy to dissipate and for rocks to fly withOUT traveling thru a space that is occupied by someone who might need a band-aid.

If you ever get tired of wresting the Roo, try this; 2.5 meters of 15 mm good rope, and a 100 rope coupler. Slide coupler onto rope, Tie a loop on each end to go over handles. After a good collar, put foot in rope/coupler at comfortable height. Rope can be criss crossed over handle for varying height adjustment. After the good collar, just put as much weight as you want on drill via weight shift. As usual, make sure you have a clean surface so you don't slip. Good balance a must. Much less tiring than holding onto it, plus you won't develop carpal tunnel as fast.

Ho, lots of fun there. The multiple angles and slo-mo give it a beauty most people wouldn't expect. I just watched some pit blasting and they used ANFO. What do you use to break up those large rock outcroppings?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 11 ай бұрын
These rocks got a 185 gram (32x200mm) piece of high strength packaged emulsion in each hole followed by some ANFO.

Do you have any videos that explain the details of the charging choices? Like det-cord vs bulk explosive, using delay pattern vs triggering all holes at once. How do you choose between many small diameter holes or fewer larger diameter, is a 25mm hole much easier to drill than a 50mm?(I know a 50mm can hold 4 times the charge of a 25mm) How much buffer is there normally between an insufficient charge and being dangerously overcharged? (I assume that you don't want to waste expensive explosive, but a second shot would likely be even more costly. Also 4x charge would need double the safety radius based on simple volume geometry, is this true in practice?) Also, in some videos I see you put in a solid charge (just a cap or is it cap and booster?) followed by two different powders and then what looks like a sand and crushed rock mix, why so many parts? Is real dynamite still used for anything?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
I do touch on details here and there but I certainly don't make instructional videos. You can no doubt understand that drilling a 50mm hole required 4x the energy input compared to drilling a 25mm hole and yes you could double the hole burden and spacing if you up sized from 25 to 50 and maintain the same PF (Power/ powder factor - g/m3) you need not be concerned about extra clearance as long as you maintain a suitable depth of stemming, but you would have to consider the likelihood of getting more larger size pieces in the yield and what size the machine can cope with. Another thing to consider is when working in an urban environment (most of my work) using larger holes and larger charge size means larger ground vibrations and complaints. First thing in the hole is the primer which is usually a piece of packaged emulsion with the cap in it or sometimes a cast booster, then some ANFO and then the screened crushed rock as stemming material, if the stemming is wet I may add a little dry stone dust on top of the ANFO as a dry buffer as ANFO is very hydroscopic and if there is any delay between loading and firing, it will suck the moisture out of the wet stemming and be ruined. Real Dynamite is still very popular in the US, not been made in Australia for about 30 years. Thanks for watching.

Is there any type of difference with the explosives for focusing the blow outwards or down or anything or are they all the same? That may be a dumb question but I wasnt sure, I'm just a toolmaker/machinest so I don't know anything about what you do but it's really awesome to watch!

Hi Bradley, all of the explosives used in this type of work are very similar, there is some variation in strength and velocity of detonation that allow tailoring to specific needs. Explosives that focus there energy in one direction are mainly used in steel cutting for structure demolition. Thanks for watching.

You know this is beautiful. The video has to be slowed down to see what’s taken place. Just amazing. Cracked the rock then blow it out of the ground. I have no clue about explosives but it is clear to see the crew that did this job used the right amount of charge to crack the rock and the bigger charge to Finnish the job. The proof is it was just enough to rise thr rock up and not too much to toss rock for miles. I have seen blasting on jobs before but I know nothing about it. Love to see professional work.

fun! i spotted a line from the outer limits show as well as the blues brothers. were there 3 of you there or did you change into your trademark banger-racing overalls later on so we could identify you? years ago we went to kosciusko in january. there was a trace of snow on the top then. we walked up in shorts and t-shirt. big mistake. it got cold quickly. we were harassed by a scary giant march fly all the way to the top and down again.
