My grandfather's 75th birthday is coming up this month, and I've been racking my brain over some sort of Hobby-Cake to make for him. I made one of these using the chocolate coating a few years ago for my sister-in-law's birthday. She's crazy for geodes and teaches 6th grade. She brought it to school and showed and shared with her students. They all went crazy for it! I never thanked you so doing it later rather than never.

Best way I've found yet of remembering my solutions section in Chemistry! The slower this saturated solution cools, the larger the crystals will be- and when the solution is heated, the solvent (water) becomes capable of holding more solute (sugar) so cool! :)

Thank you for the brilliant video! It saved me when my son asked for a geode cake for his birthday and I had no idea what it was! I used the second method - didn't do the chocolate coating but rather cut out a section of the cake and popped the full crystal into the gap.

What did I do wrong??? I boiled the water and sugar and the water was clear, like you instructed. Instead of crystals forming at the bottom, I had a film of crystals on top, but no bowl-like crystals at the bottom. It is all liquidy at the bottoom after 48+ hours!
