Ricky Nelson had a career born out of TV and he's in the Hall Of Fame since 1987! It's about time The Monkees get the respect and recognition they deserve. In fact...it was because of The Monkees background in music AND TV that led Mike Nesmith to create the first Music Video Album, then he started the first Music Video Cable Channel to play it, then he sold the channel and it became...MTV. And that changed EVERYTHING. Furthermore, the first big ratings success that MTV had was...The Monkees Marathon. The Monkees influence on Rock and culture cannot be denied.

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 4. Cliff Richard & The Shadows - largely unknown in the USA at the time, but one of the most important influences to spread Rock & Roll internationally. While a bit tamer than his American contemporaries in the 1950s, Richards & The Shadows toured Continental Europe, and the British band often recorded versions of their songs in foreign languages, making Rock more accessible. Besides being his backing band, The Shadows also recorded/performed on their own, and internationally equal The Ventures as a (largley) instrumental guitar band.

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 12. The Monkees - now that Jann Werner is no longer involved, his infamous ban on the Pre-Fab Four could be lifted. Yes, they didn't exactly form in the organic fashion of most bands, but they quickly fought against the system, and won. They sang, played instruments, wrote songs, toured, and were accepted as peers by many in the elite of 1960's Rock culture [even MCed at Monterey Pop]. Many of their recordings are timeless and range from Bubblegummy Pop to Country Rock, and the TV show laid the groundwork for some of the editing styles of MTV videos. And, really, how many other artists did The Sex Pistols cover?

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 7. Gram Parsons - the godfather of Alt.Country, the influence for the Country Rock sound of The Byrds and The Rolling Stones, the man who discovered Emmylou Harris. His influence is still being felt, and acknowledged, by artists that blur the line between Country and Rock. Subject of The Eagles' song "My Man." Three nominations thus far, but nothing since 2005.

Imagine if the Monkees had been inducted when they were all still alive how joyous the reunion and performance would have been. Now with three of the four of them dead it would just be sad. It's too late now. All thanks in great part to rock snob Jan Wenner who actively worked against their induction. But guess who IS in the hall of fame. Rock snob Jan Wenner, who in his acceptance speech didn't know that it was Buddy Knox, not Buddy Holly that sang Party Doll. I've heard they had a display at the museum that recreated the office of Rolling Stone. Some exciting stuff there.

It's not supposed to be about sales or charted hits, but about influence. I'm digging quite a bit deeper than most commenters, going back in time for historical importance, not just because I am a fan of the artist. Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 1. The Rock & Roll Trio (Johnny & Dorsey Burnette, Paul Burlison) - Raw Rockabilly, three guitars and no drums, influence on Garage Rock, Punk, Psychobilly. Ask The Yardbirds and Aerosmith who both cover "Train Kept A Rollin'."

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 3. Lonnie Donegan was the leading performer of Skiffle, a British style that combined American Folk, Country, and Blues - slightly different than Rockabilly, but very influential in people wanting to be in a band. Just ask Skiffle band The Quarrymen, who became The Beatles (and many other British Invasion bands that started in Skiffle).

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 2. Esther Phillips - while with Johnny Otis, was one of the first female singers to emerge from R&B to pioneer Rock & Roll in the early 1950s. After fighting addiction, she resurfaced in the 1960s, adding her distinctive vocals to a variety of musical genres. Paul McCartney said her version of "And I Love Him," was one of his favorite Beatles covers, and the Fab Four brought her over to perform in England. Nominated twice [86-87], her name has not appeared on a ballot since.

I see a few disagreements in this comment section about nominating The Monkees to the RHOF. Let's go over the reasons why they should already be in the RHOF. * They really were musicians. Mike played guitar performing mostly folky/country songs. Peter was a rock guitarist that had played with several groups. Davy had been a child actor in England for many years. He sang on the British stage and on Broadway. You don't perform on Broadway if you don't have some chops! And, yes, he was just adorable baning on his tambourine. Mickey had also been a child actor with (my opinion) his very best work on the TV show Circus Boy which I watched all the time it was on and I was a picky kid. Possessing a natural charisma, he picked up the drums and singing quickly. * Girls just went ga-ga over them while boys seemed to be jealous of and condescending towards them. Hey, I was a girl once [a long time ago] and I didn't go crazy over them BUT they delivered some great performances of some great songs by Boyce and Hart and Neil Diamond, along with other writers. It takes some 1a1kind of talent to win over one half of the United States (and some other countries) population and then keep them in those girls' hearts and minds for decades. Get over it men out there! Just like Bread (oh my, that song IF, I just loved it!) which I heard boys hated, the girls were dancing with, dating, and marrying YOU, in part because of the music of The Monkees.

Here's one of my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 5. Johnny Hallyday - in America we say "who?" Often referred to as the French Elvis, Hallyday brought Rock & Roll to France and sang mostly in his native tongue, Over a 57-year career, with sales of over 110 million records, which makes him one of the top-selling artists in the world - but the Hall of Fame is only for English speakers.

Foreigner and Styx are the most glaring snubs. Not to pick on Cheap Trick but they performed during much of the same era. Foreigner sold 50 million records, Styx over 30 million and Cheap Trick 20 million, yet Cheap Trick has been in the Hall of Fame since 2016 and Foreigner and Styx have not even been finalists??? Six of Foreigner's nine studio albums went platinum with all but one reaching multi-platinum while Styx had (4) multi-platinum albums in a row. Cheap Trick has had four out of twenty studio albums reach platinum and only two reaching multi-platinum. Styx and Foreigner had MUCH more air play during the mid 1970s - to mid 1980s than Cheap Trick.

Their style helped lead to the development of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Thrash, and Speed Metal. One of the genre's most influential bands, Motorhead received one nomination in 2020 (18 years after being eligible).

As far as I'm concerned the following bands should be in the hall: (in no particular order) Tangerine Dream - During the late 70's and early 80's they did so much soundtrack work that almost that alone should get them in but starting with Phaedra they have presented a different take on "rock' ie. space or "Kraut"rock. Their catalog of not only studio releases plus soundtrack work should qualify them along with their influence on a number of bands. They've been eligible since 1992 and even if you go from their first major notice with Phaedra in 1974 they've been eligible since 1999. Toto - While their catalog is modest they had a huge effect by their work as studio musicians should qualify them in the musical excellence category. Members of the band had a large contribution to Thriller among other songs including Steve Lukather on Physical by Olivia Newton-John the song that holds the record for most weeks at #1 in the 1980's. The Fixx - I'll admit it's a bit of a personal pick but they've had a long body of work and still release albums with their latest in 2022. Their music was prevalent during the 1980's and as a long time listener their music has not suffered the ravages of time as some bands have experienced. Kansas - All over the radio in the 1970's and early 1980's their song catalog with Dust in the Wind and Carry On Wayward Son are songs worthy of the hall. I also agree with the bands you've listed in this video. I am on the fence about Kate Bush but don't have a problem if she gets inducted.

I LOVE Tangerine Dream, but if you would include them, I'd say you'd also have to include Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre. In fact, I would argue that Vangelis and Jarre made music that was much closer to rock than anything Tangerine Dream ever did. Larry Fast is another one--he was the keyboardist for the first four solo Peter Gabriel albums, and released his own influential music under the moniker of Synergy.

@@mournblade1066 Mournblade we have to stop meeting like this :) I completely agree on all 3 being inducted but I'm not sure on the rock aspect of Vangelis and Jarre. I love their music and have a bunch of it and Vangelis did a lot of soundtracks like Tangerine Dream did I kind of feel that the more prevalent guitar of Edgar on the late 70's and early 80's albums give Tangerine Dream a bit of an edge for being first to be inducted of the three. I'll come right out and say it - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts pop divas and rappers while snubbing classic-rock guitar videos to "own the rockists!" This is the Hall's way of saying that rock and roll as defined by radio stations and their listeners is a false definition that allows bands you love but the critics that run the Hall detest to be considered "rock and roll" when they're really not - and that pop singers and hip-hop acts are more rock and roll than your favorite classis rock band will EVER be.
@TrackXTrack
@TrackXTrack Жыл бұрын
Not sure I agree. The Rock Hall has demonstrated a broadly defined (or undefined) criteria for the genre of "rock and roll" from the very beginning. I understand if people don't like that or agree with that, but that's the way they set it up from day one. It isn't a question of one act being "more rock and roll" than another. To the Rock Hall it is ALL rock and roll. And the most unfortunate side effect of defining "rock" so broadly is that the volume of acts eligible for nomination/induction is MUCH bigger as a result. Thus, the Rock Hall has to diversify the ballot each year, making sure there's a little of everything represented... classic rock, R&B, pop, hip hop, and sometimes even country. I'm in no way going to praise their system as being perfect or even good. But it is what it is, and my commentary on the subject is generally rooted in that perspective.

@TrackXTrack it's all a business & politics nowadays, my motivation for David Ghrohl & Tom Morello was to considered them to vote for iron maiden and others pending artists to be voted in , because I heard that Mr. Ghrohl & Mr. Morello are part of the voting committee and they voted themselves and influenced others . How disrespectful they are to the Rock music that they supposed to represent. I was being mocked by the foo fighters fans when I complained about them being favored over iron maiden..

@@TrackXTrack Although I would argue Joy Division was the start of Gothic rock, Bauhaus truly solidified it with their vampiric imagery. I mentioned The Cramps, who technically predated both Joy Division and Bauhaus, but mainly because they carried the torch of rock and roll's origins: rockabilly, but through in The Crypt Keeper from EC Comics for good measure.

The Monkees didn't play the instruments in their records. Neither did The Beach Boys.

Most groups didn't play their instruments on the records back in the 1960s. They could still play, and certainly did live, but The Wrecking Crew is on just about every rock album released in the 1960s, at least in the U.S.
@thebunter

The Monkees weren't allowed to play at the start of the show but over time they took over. Nesmith and Tork could both play pretty well. The Beach Boys had Daryl Dragon of Captain and Tenille playing keyboards for them and for some time actually had Toni Tenille in the band and playing with them.

@@thebunter I actually saw The Captain and Tenille perform back in the mid-1990s, and Toni was telling the audience that she was the only female member of the Beach Boys. Fun Fact: She actually sang backup vocals on Pink Floyd's _The Wall_. I think The Beach Boys originally sang backup on "The Show Must Go On," but Roger Waters later scrapped it. That would have been totally cool.

@@mournblade1066 I knew about her being a back up singer for the Wall. I saw an interview with her where she talked about being at the concert and some kid questioned her being there and she told him she sang on the wall and he didn't believe her until she showed him the album cover.

That was a bizarre list. I agree Paul Rodgers deserves an AME but Bad Company? They're an awful band. No way. Kate Bush? I cannot comprehend why anyone wants to listen to her. She is the second coming of Yoko Ono - voice like nails on a chalkboard. Hard pass.i can see some merit in Devo. They do not make my Top Ten but are in my Top 25...if in fact JD/NO gets in this year, I think Devo will follow on that New Wave train. It's a Yes from me for ELP as I agree they have been wrongfully snubbed.
