Note: This is a long comment with my Top 25 Snubs list with explanations. Enjoy if you choose to read the entirety of it. TOP 25 SNUBS FROM RRHoF Special Mention: Judas Priest - I realize they got in in 2021 via the Award Of Musical Excellence, but really, they should have been in as performers many years ago. But, they are technically in the Hall so I am not including them on this list. 25. Rory Gallagher - the Hall has correctly added Blues legends like SRV, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Buddy Guy but why Galllagher has been overlooked is a mystery. Jimi Hendrix himself called Gallagher the best guitarist who ever lived - so that speaks for itself. 24. Suzi Quatro - One might argue that she was the first hard rocker female artist, but some might claim that title belongs elsewhere. Regardless, countless musicians have cited Quatro as the reason they picked up a guitar and believed they could be rock stars - including Hall of Famer Joan Jett. 23. Devo - many people have this band near the top of their list of snubs, but I find it hard to separate Devo from the likes of Joy Division/New Order, Human League, and Depeche Mode in terms of influence. Having said that - they still were highly important in the New Wave era and introduced a number of innovations that are still used by bands today, so they have earned a spot. 22. Fela Kuti - I do NOT believe Kuti has earned a spot as a performer, but I am VERY surprised he has not made it in as an Early Influence considering he is considered the father of Afrobeat. 21. Frank Sinatra - also on the Early Influence train, I am shocked that Sinatra has not already been added. Artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Billy Joel, Johnny Cash, and Clyde McPhatter have all cited Sinatra as a major influence. So - get to it already. 20. Daft Punk - I admit I am not a fan of this genre of music, but once Kraftwerk went in as an Early Influence inductee in 2021, Daft Punk is their heir apparent. IN terms of ‘industrial dance music’ (a term I invented just now) they are at the top of the pyramid. 19. Chubby Checker - I am unsure if there was some personal beef between Checker and Jan Wenner when the Hall first opened, but the fact that he was not included in the first two induction classes is criminal. His influence as arguably the first “dance” artist and his ability to combine r&b, pop, rock, and even a bit of country says he should have been considered in the same breath as Ray Charles or Smokey Robinson. Shameful. 18. The Runaways - Yes, I realize this would make Joan Jett a double inductee, but the Runaways were incredibly important. When the Go-Go’s were recently inducted, they specifically named The Runaways as their primary influence. 17. New York Dolls - that virtually all the punk bands in the Hall are British is puzzling. The New York Dolls picked up the genre and put a definitive American spin on things. Nominated numerous times, but not yet in - they should be given their due. 16. Garth Brooks - yes, I know that some Rock purists will chastise me for even suggesting him but as much as the likes of Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash influenced the beginning of the country-rock genre, Garth Brooks proved to be the King of the genre. That traditional Rock is now considered a “fringe” genre and Country music is either the top or the second-most listened to genre, that is because of Brooks more than any other artist. 15. Blood, Sweat, & Tears - Lots of bands included orchestral elements in their music, but BST wrote the blueprint as to how it should work (well, they and the Moody Blues who are already in the Hall).. Highly innovative and influential, they are constantly overlooked. 14. Motorhead - I believe that Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest are all superior to Motorhead, but Lars Ullrich of Metallica specifically mentions Motorhead as a main influence. 13. John Denver - OK, this may come out of left field but in an era when folk music, protest songs, and soft rock was being shunted aside, John Denver was still one of the best-selling artists of the 1970s. Sales do not actually matter but one cannot deny the influence that he had on artists of both sexes in multiple genres. If the Hall does not feel he has earned a spot as a Performer, at least put him in as an AME. 12. The Fifth Dimension - Look, I am no dummy and don’t believe that this band will eve get into the Hall - but in many ways they were the first band to include psychedelia as a main part of their act (the Byrds, Tommy James & The SHondells, and the Grateful Dead can also be called this). Their harmonies were great and were cited in the future by the likes of Hall & Oates in terms of voice mixing. 11. Soundgarden (Performer) or Chris Cornell (AME) - in the same way that I can see Paul Rodgers being inducted as an AME recipient, I can see the Hall doing the same for Cornell for his work with Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave, Mad Season, and a a solo performer. However, it is time for Soundgarden to get their due. The big knock is that the bands most closely citing bands like Soundgarden as influences are bands like Creed and Nickelback so that is what I think is keeping them out. 10. Thin Lizzy - Why this band is not yet in mystifies me. As musically talented as their British counterpart Led Zeppelin, they were highly innovative and influential. 9. Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - with due respect to those who say King Crimson should be the next prog rock act inducted, it is ELP that deserves that honour. Keith Emerson is arguably the best keyboardist in the history of r’n’r and their music could easily be described as the progenitor of what would become trance rock. 8. Iron Maiden - I have faith they will get their due this year, but it has taken way too long for them to be given the recognition they have earned. Easily innovative and influential, they are considered one of the best ever heavy metal bands to ever exist. 7. Foreigner - the best of the AOR bands, they combined bluesy riffs, hard rock, soft ballads, and the booming voice of Lou Gramm to thoroughly blow their competition away. I admit that for this pick, I cannot cite a specific influence or innovation they brought to the table, but it just seems a Rock Hall without Foreigner is missing a key component. 6. Grand Funk Railroad - innovative in their combining of multiple genres, GFR is the band that many point to if one is asked “what is rock and roll?” I honestly thought that once the Moody Blues made it in, GFR would be on the next year’s induction list but alas that did not come to pass. 5. Diana Ross (solo) - She is in with the Supremes as she should be, but it is just not right that Stevie Nicks is recognized twice and Diana Ross is not. Both are deserving, but Ross directly influenced the likes of Michael and Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and contemporaries like Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick. Truly a generational talent. 4. Cher - Let’s face it. Before there was Madonna, there was Cher being the one who highly influenced fashion, and was in some ways, the one who showed all other artists including Hall of Famers like Madonna and David Bowie, the importance of re-invention. A career spanning 6 decades, and still influencing artists today including Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. 3. Phil Collins - Why it is that Phil Collins has not been recognized for his solo efforts is truly bizarre. In my estimation, he is a better musician than Peter Gabriel and yet Gabriel was a no-brainer addition and Collins has yet to be nominated. Dave Grohl has stated that along with Neal Peart, Collins was one of the most influential artists to ever play a drum kit. 2. Jethro Tull - What can I say about them that has not already been said by those who are much more knowledgeable than I? Innovative, and highly influential, they are the band without genre (regardless of whether the Grammys say otherwise). Quite frankly, this is the biggest embarrassment the Hall needs to address. 1. Gordon Lightfoot - When Bob Dylan cites Lightfoot as the greatest songwriter he ever encountered, that says all you need to know. Influencing the likes of Dylan, the Byrds, Johnny Cash, The Guess Who, Bryan Adams, James Taylor, and I could probably name several more - the Hall completely flubbed when they ignored this icon. I doubt he will ever get in as a Performer, so for God’s sake do the right thing and give him an Early Influence nod.

MANY great suggestions there, and several I'm sure will be controversial such as Sinatra, Garth Brooks, Daft Punk and Diana Ross. I don't disagree with your logic on any of these. I'll be curious to see what others think of your choices.

Scorpions! They are incredible musicians with an amazing live performance. They have a great mix of music styles - everything from ballads to hard rock. They still tour internationally - including the US, Europe, as well as Central & South America - just to name a few. There are probably just a handful of bands even in your excellent list that could garner enough interest to make that effort worthwhile. With Winds of Change symbolizing the fall of the Iron Curtain, it's tough debate their impact on music both domestically in the US, as well as across the globe.

@@shaneweippert6503 I actually have a Top 100 Snubs and the Scorpions come in at #32. THey are like Kate Bush in that a lot of people in North America think of them as a one hit wonder (which I know is erroneous). When it comes to influence - it is harder to see it in N.A. (incidentally, I live in Canada). Hell, BTO and The Guess Who did not make my list either - nor did Triumph. Lots of great music out there.

Jethro Tull is one of the greatest bands in history. EASILY the biggest snub, out of many many obvious well-deserving artists. They could rock, they could folk and they could prog with the best of them. Tens of millions of records sold, arena concerts as headliners for years and years, I mean, come on! Ohio is not a boring state! And Cleveland is definitely not a boring city! The Rock Hall is a museum where you can see all sorts of artifacts donated by members. We have at least two other great museums (the art museum and the natural science museum), great architecture like the Terminal Tower and Steggie The Stegosaurus, a cool zoo, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the historic Lakeview Cemetery where three U.S. presidents and other famous people are buried. Every year the zoo hosts the beautiful Asian Lantern Festival and on Halloween Boo At The Zoo. And speaking of Ohio, Devo are from Akron and were witnesses to the Kent State killings in 1970. And Columbus has the James Thurber House. Many famous Ohioans are writers-- Thurber, Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison, and Celeste Ng, to name only a few. I have two names I want to include to the snub list. Suzi Quatro has been eligible since 1998 as a solo act, or 1990 if one counts her work with the Pleasure Seekers. She is cited as a major influence by female rockers including RHOF inductee Joan Jett. Had Suzi Quatro never existed, many female rockers might never taken up their instruments. Sweet - The British glam rock band had a far more successful run at their peak than American music publications gave them credit. While their US run from 1973 to 1978 was good, their achievements in their native UK, Denmark, and Germany were far greater. This included multiple number 1 hits. Eligible since 1994, Andy Scott is the sole survivor of the classic lineup; Brian Connolly died in 1997, Mick Tucker in 2002, and Steve Priest in 2020.

One of the most influential bands to not be considered, nominated, and missed by most of the "snub" lists is Mott the Hoople. They are your favorite band's favorite band. Mick Jones attributes them as their primary influence, even to the point of hiring Guy Stevens to produce thier landmark album "London Calling." They are pioneers of glam. Their proto-punk sound on "Brain Capers" influenced all future punk rock. Listen to "The Moon Upstairs" or "Death May Be Your Santa Claus." In addition, Queen backed up Mott on their American Tour in support of "The Hoople." It has been noted that listeing to "Marionettes" inspired Freddie Mercury to write "Bohemian Rhapsody." They have never gotten the respect that they deserve but their importance is undeniable.

It's not supposed to be about sales or charted hits, but about influence. I'm digging quite a bit deeper than most commenters, going back in time for historical importance, not just because I am a fan of the artist. Here's my "Dirty Dozen Snubs From The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: 1. The Rock & Roll Trio (Johnny & Dorsey Burnette, Paul Burlison) - Raw Rockabilly, three guitars and no drums, influence on Garage Rock, Punk, Psychobilly. Ask The Yardbirds and Aerosmith who both cover "Train Kept A Rollin'." 2. Esther Phillips - while with Johnny Otis, was one of the first female singers to emerge from R&B to pioneer Rock & Roll in the early 1950s. After fighting addiction, she resurfaced in the 1960s, adding her distinctive vocals to a variety of musical genres. Paul McCartney said her version of "And I Love Him," was one of his favorite Beatles covers, and the Fab Four brought her over to perform in England. Nominated twice [86-87], her name has not appeared on a ballot since. 3. Lonnie Donegan was the leading performer of Skiffle, a British style that combined American Folk, Country, and Blues - slightly different than Rockabilly, but very influential in people wanting to be in a band. Just ask Skiffle band The Quarrymen, who became The Beatles (and many other British Invasion bands that started in Skiffle). 4. Cliff Richard & The Shadows - largely unknown in the USA at the time, but one of the most important influences to spread Rock & Roll internationally. While a bit tamer than his American contemporaries in the 1950s, Richards & The Shadows toured Continental Europe, and the British band often recorded versions of their songs in foreign languages, making Rock more accessible. Besides being his backing band, The Shadows also recorded/performed on their own, and internationally equal The Ventures as a (largley) instrumental guitar band. 5. Johnny Hallyday - in America we say "who?" Often referred to as the French Elvis, Hallyday brought Rock & Roll to France and sang mostly in his native tongue, Over a 57-year career, with sales of over 110 million records, which makes him one of the top-selling artists in the world - but the Hall of Fame is only for English speakers. 6. Chubby Checker - by putting a dance to it, he (and Dick Clark) took a song about sexual intercourse by Hank Ballard ("The Twist") and launched an international sensation, and quickly even polite society was shakin' their behinds to Rock & Roll. 7. Gram Parsons - the godfather of Alt.Country, the influence for the Country Rock sound of The Byrds and The Rolling Stones, the man who discovered Emmylou Harris. His influence is still being felt, and acknowledged, by artists that blur the line between Country and Rock. Subject of The Eagles' song "My Man." Three nominations thus far, but nothing since 2005. 8, 9, 10. Fanny, Suzy Quatro, The Runaways - it's about time we bring these ladies into the (mostly) boy's club. Sure, Joan Jett was inducted, but with her all-male band The Blackhearts, and not the group that started her career. 11. Motorhead - infusing Heavy Metal with the energy of Punk, Lemmy and the ever-revolving membership were embraced by music fans in both camps. Their style helped lead to the development of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Thrash, and Speed Metal. One of the genre's most influential bands, Motorhead received one nomination in 2020 (18 years after being eligible). 12. The Monkees - now that Jann Werner is no longer involved, his infamous ban on the Pre-Fab Four could be lifted. Yes, they didn't exactly form in the organic fashion of most bands, but they quickly fought against the system, and won. They sang, played instruments, wrote songs, toured, and were accepted as peers by many in the elite of 1960's Rock culture [even MCed at Monterey Pop]. Many of their recordings are timeless and range from Bubblegummy Pop to Country Rock, and the TV show laid the groundwork for some of the editing styles of MTV videos. And, really, how many other artists did The Sex Pistols cover?

For huge artist all it takes is a nomination. The Moody Blues and ELO got in after their first. Foreigner 38 million and Boston 32m albums U.S., are probably the biggest groups not in the hall. These two bands created a form of mainstream rock critics never liked. T.Rex and Roxy Music got in once they were nominated. I think the British voters rallied hard to get them in. Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Blue Oyster Cult are my picks. In America Judas Priest was bigger than Iron Maiden. Everywhere else the opposite is true.

No, by far the biggest and most offensive snub has been the band Love. The Monkees were snubbed by Wenner chicanery, ELP because Wenner hates Prog (see, e.g., King Crimson), Tull because Wenner is stupid, Nick Drake b/c Wenner doesn’t understand an entire genre, and Love because Arthur Lee made a “homophobic remark” to Wenner 3+ decades ago. A multi racial band that produced three albums of very high quality one of which some cite as the greatest of all time. Wenner is a jerk, the RRHOF a joke. It’s only value is to bring attention to great bands/artists who deserve more attention in America & it can’t even do that.

Iron Maiden, Kate Bush & Devo are pretty much the only ones who would eventually get their call into the RRHOF in the next few years whether in both voting & non voting methods. Bad Company, GFR, Foreigner & Styx won't be getting a consideration since they aren't as historically, artistically & culturally important like the ones who are inducted when eligible. Jethro Tull, ELP & The Monkees are sure things not to get voted in as performers instead putting them through Early Influence & Musical Excellence due to the fact we're getting to a point when 80's & 90's are taking over the election process. Why does nobody mention the band who was an influence on the 80's rock scene... Boston. Tom scholz is always forgotten

Boston is mentioned at 3:26. They ranked at 15.

Styx and Foreigner should be in the Hall of Fame, but for the rest of this list, not so much!

If it was up to the fans, Styx and Foreigner would be in already.

They certainly have a better shot now that they’re not competing with Judas Priest.

The problem with that is Judas Priest got in on an "influencers" category not a true nomination. (The other problem is J Wenner hates metal)

The J Geils Band ??!!!!! Not only the band should be in the Hall of Fame but Peter Wolf as a solo artist should be there as well. It's funny, he gets invited when other artists are inducted to perform. No mention at all... sad sad sad
@TrackXTrack

I agree with J Geils Band, but I truly don't see any possibility of Peter Wolf getting in as a solo artist. There's no way he made that big of an impact on his own. Not saying he's not great, but he just doesn't have the resume as a solo act.

Simply an award. Seems anyone popular gets in.

I don't think "anyone popular" gets in. After all, Dave Matthews Band won the fan vote by a large margin a few years ago and they didn't end up getting in, so popularity isn't everything.

Original Rock-n-Roller, Cliff Richard has sold over 250 million records. Tom Jones over 100 million. Neither one made the Rolling Stone top 200 either.
