Saw Wizzard live 3 times. The first time at Blackpool was amazing. I got to meet all the band in the dressing room but shows got shorter and shorter and progressively worse. He was on and off stage in 45 minutes at Southport in 74. Sad really. Wizzo band were awful but his big band reincarnation has been great. However, he has now stopped performing I think. I have stopped being a fan if he cant be bothered to tour.

living through the sixties explosion of British rock through to this day, the the British rock scene was inspiringly best and most creative in the whole of the world to many with to many to mention male and female included, most people from the USA are gobsmacked when they learn their favourite rock band is not American but British and probably the top 10 are all British Roy wood was to me an exceptional shy musical artistic talent and co creator with Jeff Lynn and the others of ELO but there hits when they where the move are rarely spoken of which is a shame really, he went solo later and had a great career with wizard in the UK and else where i salute Roy as one of my musical hero's of the 20th century alongside any that's mentioned by any one. your memory will live on in your music for ever Roy

When I REALLY noticed Roy, it was an early 70's TOTP appearance from Wizard, and WOW! He jumped right out of the telly with his look and sound. An instant HERO! And remained so behind a lot of things I do with sound. I think, despite limitations of the studios being used, he was better at getting a Phil Spectre wall of sound than Spectre did? And that facepaint lok with Wizard? Still inspires many an event performace art night yet in me. He both encompassed classy recreations of classic rock n roll sound, yet injects it all with his own stamp. Now that is not an easy thing to do. Most folk come out like cheap copies (most modern college trained bands?) rather than the clever collages of influences that Roy employed, from Spctre to Jerry Lee Lewis, to the Beatles.

I remember coming out and admitted liking The Electric Light Orchestra in Technical Drawing class to my friend Richard. That was the equivalent to suicide in the eighties when you were just settling in to Senior School, but he then went on to recommend I listen to The Battle of Marston Moor and Here is the News. We didn't notice that our teacher was standing behind us listening in.. Mr Watkinson didn't tell us off for slacking, he let go of our throats (metaphorically) and proceeded to give the class a lecture on the [his words] "Genius Roy Wood" for about 30 minutes. That's how to teach 11 year olds (the other 26 kids in the class were probably bored & drawing cocks on the desks with tipex or writing BROS on their shirt). That is a long way of saying Woody is the best and always has been.

Had a similar experience in History class aged 11 when the teacher we all hated noticing my festival badge asked me in front of the class..'How were the (Jefferson) Airplane?'..wow..now he's great and was from then on.!

Thats a ridiculous statement Pam. He is great - but Jeff is a genius - not lyrically but as composer of music. His musical backdrops to those hits from 1972 to 1983 are top drawer as good as The Beatles, Phil Spector or any of the classical greats. Sure he cannot sing that good but neither can Bowie. ELO need to be ranked up firmly with Bowie, Queen and any 70s bands. But Pam, Wood is great, no doubt and could have been Lennon to Jeffs, MaCartney if he had stayed as he was a good songwriter,
