Rock Musician Reacts to LOVEBITES 'Paranoia'

One thing I've noticed with LOVEBITES is that they are incapable of composing a bad song

Kiiilller song and so underrated, hardly anyone talks about it. So fast, so heavy, so brutal, so complex, but yet so melodic. One of my absolute favorites 🤘🏻🙂

What we should pay attention to is that this song was included in the mini-album "GLORY, GLORY TO THE WORLD" released in March 2021. This album contains 5 songs, "(1) GLORY TO THE WORLD / (2) NO TIME TO HESITATE / (3) PARANOIA / (4) DYSTOPIA SYMPHONY / (5) Winds Of Transylvania". I think many people know GLORY TO THE WORLD and Winds Of Transylvania because they also have live videos. And the other 3 songs have no live performance record or music video, so it seems that recognition is low. However, the intense energy and sense of speed of these three songs (NO TIME TO HESITATE/PARANOIA/DYSTOPIA SYMPHONY) are at the same level as "Judgment Day" released two years later. Many people say that "Judgment Day" was the beginning of LOVEBITES' breakthrough. However, after listening to these three songs, I believe that LOVEBITES' breakthrough occurred in March 2021. After about two years of sufficient maturity, Judgment Day was unveiled to us. In that sense, I hope more people will listen to this song (PARANOIA), DYSTOPIA SYMPHONY and NO TIME TO HESITATE. ---------- from Nippon *It is a sentence using Google translation. The other three songs on GGTTW (including this one) don't have catchy melodies/riffs like the songs on the Judgement Day album. Other than the two main songs (WOT and GTTW) I prefer every single song on the JD album over P, DS, and NTTH to be honest. These 3 songs do have great elements and a blend unique to their other songs, but they just don't do it for me like the songs on JD do. Asami's vocals aren't as appealing to me on those 3 songs either, which I think is a part of the reason I rate them lower than their other work.

How is it possible that this absolute masterpiece is so ignored? This composition of exceptional beauty anticipates the new course of the Lovebites in 'Judgment day', in particular I am thinking of 'Dissonance' and 'the soldier stands solitarily'.

On Japanese websites, it is mentioned "lyrics: Asami", "music: Asami AND Mao", "arrangement: Lovebites"... Asami is not only a simple "lyricist" but also an excellent composer!

I'm pretty sure it was mostly composed by Mao, Asami probably did the vocal melody since it is related to the lyrics but I'm sure the actual music is all just Mao

A hidden gem. The other unduly underrated ones on the same "Glory, Glory to the World" EP are "Dystopia Symphony" (which you have already reacted to) and "No Time to Hesitate".

Such a great song that fits the title. You're listening to chaos but organized and arranged in such a powerful yet beautiful story of unpredictable chapters. Oddly, to this day, I have not found this song in any published set list. Even Dystopia Symphony has only been played once at a show. Such a shame because, to me, they are both masterpieces quite unique to the entire LOVEBITES catalog.

I am not necessarily a big fan of a lot of the Mao songs (especially the one he writes alone) as I am not a huge fan of the epic choruses and more epic style of power metal which he tends to write, but I have a feeling Asami brought in some of the more thrashy sound in this one and I do enjoy this track overall because of that. It also has some progressive elements, which I do appreciate.

Pretty sure Mao doesn't actually play on any of the band's songs. He definitely composed and arranges, but he's not one of the musicians in the band.

This is a good song, but the best songs on this maxi single are No time to Hesitate and Winds of Transylvania.

Mao arranges…he doesn’t play. He doesn’t outright compose either, he works to arrange songs that are Asami pieces.

Honestly, just looking at their latest album. Mao has credits for (next to arrangement and composing for some songs) Additional Musician, Keyboards and Programming. So it seems like he at least did some keyboardwork and programming (not sure what, I don't remember if there are programmed drums in the background). It seems like he has the same credits on "Thunder Vengeance" on their previous album as well and on the "Clockwork Immortality" album and the "Glory, Glory, To The World" EP. So he probably has these on most of their albums (I am too lazy to check them all). My guess is that he does some of the keyboardwork on some of the songs he composes or co-composes. Miyako has keyboards credits as well, so she probably does the same thing on the tracks she composes. Mao has music by/composed by credits on a large portion of their songs, including Paranoia (although a good chunk of those with one of the members, like with Asami on this one). Mao has co-writing credits on 3/5 track on the "Glory, Glory, To The World" EP for example (for the limited edition with Winds Of Transylvania on it, which he also co-wrote). He also has some solo writing credits on tracks. For their "Judgement Day" album: The Spirit Lives On, Victim Of Time, My Orion, are all only written by Mao. On their "Electric Pentagram" album it only seems to be Holy War (which makes it a pure Mao track I really like, that doesn't happen too often). From what I can see he solo-wrote at least 1 track on each of their full albums. So he has more influence on their music than you would think (maybe a bit too much for my personal taste). But that doesn't take away from their musicianship and writing skills, those are obviously very high.

@@MaartenT I have read Japanese magazine articles by Asami. Everything with her name next to it is her basic idea. Mao helps because she is not sufficiently knowledgeable to compose outright, and likewise with the arrangement. I stand corrected that Mao doesn’t compose outright because the credits clearly indicate that he does. I strongly disagree that he actually plays anything instrumentally or electronically. He would have to be credited as a support member of the band.

@@alekhidell That's possible, I am just reading the credits, so I have no clue how that split works. He does get credits as "Additional Musician" next to Keyboards and Programming. I don't know how else you would interpret that, to me it sounds like he is playing some notes on an instrument every once in a while. You can check your CD's if you want, I got this from a discography website, but those entries were vetted by someone I know is very thourough and I inputted the ones for Judgement Day myself straight from the booklet. He is right under the members on the Judgement Day credits.

@@alekhidell I wouldn't have known if I hadn't put those credits online and I wasn't spending way too much time on that website. I knew he was involved, but I didn't know he did as much as he seemingly does. That said, I think their music is still very much them. Some very good Japanese bands have (or had) people a lot who wrote a lot of their music for them, but they certainly were/are putting their own spin on it. I have no doubt it's the same for Lovebites with how much stuff they write themselves.
