I definitely prefer having a screen protector. I have paperlikes newest version, but honestly I don't think it is textured enough. They changed the texture from the first version, I assume because people complained about the texture wearing down their apple pencils. The ball point style nib is intriguing to me, but if they wear out after only a couple weeks then it's not really worth it. I hope they continue testing it!

New ball point nibs definitely last longer so far. Screen does better too. Will follow up with more deets as soon as I am able.

i have the ESR dupe of the original and some random metal tips. awesome feel and the screen protector doesn't get scratched. It uses magnets so there is a slight gap between the screen and the protector near the edges that stuff can get into sometimes but other than that i have no complaints over the past 3 months.

To answer your question, I definitely prefer using a screen protector on my iPad 10; am super curious about the Remarkable2 "feel" and yet would like to make this iPad work for me if possible. So, am leaning toward purchasing this RPP product. Thanks for this, and your previous reviews, very helpful that you keep coming back to this with your updates!

Thanks … yeah, I'm curious about the Remarkable feeling as well. I use my iPad for too many other things than pure drawing to make me want to get it.

I used mine for around 2 months before I had to give up on it. Really loved the textured surface but it scratched up so much, I could barely see my drawing. I loved it, until it just became unusable. I draw every day for hours so it was getting a lot of use but these things are meant for designers/illustrators so I was really disappointed to not be able to continue using it. I kind of wish I hadn’t loved it so much. I really dislike going back to the slippy surface of the naked screen. I’ve also used pen tips but they don’t compare to having the texture of RPP.

I bought v2 and tossed the tips. Still a phenomenal experience, I’ll just buy the v3 tips that won’t scratch the screen hopefully.

You not gonna avoid the scratches. All my screen protectors had this over time. Personally it’s only an issue when the screen is off. When on I can’t see it as they aren’t deep.

I noticed that the metal tips were making an awful squeaking sound against the screen protector at certain angles and pressures, and of course they did scratch it right away. Glad to know I’m not doing anything wrong, thanks for the vid!!

I haven’t used this brand yet, but I have been using metal tips and matte screen protectors for while now and have found that adjusting the pen pressure curve settings helped me a lot to prevent scratches. I have it set so that I only need to apply a small amount of pressure to get my strokes down and it has help my wrists out a lot too. My only problem now is all the off brand tips I have tried so far haven’t been the best quality in terms of dropping my Apple Pencil. Due to my clumsy hands, I have lost two Apple pencils due to off-brand tips breaking inside my pencil upon contact with the floor. Never happened with the original tips. 😢

Have you noticed any change in accuracy? I briefly tried using the v2 tip, and I immediately noticed the pen was no longer accurate when using tilt. From what I can tell, the metal tip is slightly longer than the regular apple pencil tip, which affects where the pen shows on screen when using tilt. It lines up perfectly with the regular apple tip, but it's off with the RPP tip.

I just come across the SZJCLTD Paper Screen protector for iPad. Like Astropad Rock Paper Pencil, it comes both with the screen protector and metallic apple pen tips. Unlike it, it uses a sticky screen protector instead of a magnetic one. I've ordered it and plan to try it out.
@TomFroese

@roderictaylor
@roderictaylor 4 ай бұрын
@@TomFroese So far, the SZJCLTD screen protector feels similar to the Astropad 1, particularly when using it with the accompanying metallic pencil nib. I like it. For me, the choice is whether I'd rather have a sticky protector that stays securely on the screen, has no air gap, and is easy to keep clean, vs one I can take off temporarily when I want to watch a movie. It was relatively easy to install, as such screen protectors go. It came with a tray to hold the protector and the iPad as you install it. I'll have to keep using it and see how I feel about it over time.

I wonder if it could really be considered "reusable" when the primary reason it would need to be removed is that it will get scratched up too much. Basically making it disposable at that point. I'm not sure I'm convinced. I like the combo being included and the fact that it is forgiving with installation. But if it gets mauled quickly, that's not the best.
@TomFroese
@TomFroese 6 ай бұрын
Reusable isn’t really the point. Removable so you can have plain glass screen when you want and switch back and forth. Will follow up with details in a new vid soon.

I had the first version. The surface eventually smoothed down and scratched it up after less than a month (everyday use, but I'm not a heavy handed drawer). So I lost the paper like feel quickly. It's a shame because it's very pricey getting it to Canada esp after the exchange and Atlantic taxes. I ended up buying a much cheaper competitor brand on Amazon, and it feels exactly the same with the same application. This time I bought a pack of cheap plastic tips. All of that still came 2x under the price of what I paid RPP. And it came with a wet cleaning cloth and a dry cloth. After a month, my experience with the new set up is still going well. I'm curious to try v2, but at that price for Canadians, I probably won't. Hope it works better for you 🙏

@@TomFroese thanks. I just wish Apple made a version with a screen or a pentip like a wacom; something just for artists. Perhaps even a screen similar to those Samsung frame Tv's that don't have a glare. I feel there's an untapped market here for Apple.

Thanks - that’s a good review. One question… I have my iPad Pro 11 inch in a bumper case, the edges of which encroach on the corners of the screen bezel. Would 5his get in the way of the screen protector?

Not sure but I would guess that you would put the screen protector on first and then the case. Socks first then shoes!

You said you would be very surprised if your iPad screen doesn’t have scratches on it. That’s not good. Not good at all. How can a product like this allow the underlying iPad screen to get scratched? Can you let us know if the screen is now already scratched up? This may be a dumb question but could you put this on top of a traditional glass protector like Zagg?
@TomFroese

Hi, I definitely said the wrong word here - I meant Screen PROTECTOR! I'm very sorry for the confusion. Hopefully by watching the entire video you get enough context to understand that's what I meant. Thanks for pointing this out though - I will be more careful in the future.

Also, I can't tell you if putting the SP on Zagg will work, but hopefully you now know the SP will protect your screen and not let it get scratched. Sorry again for the confusion.

I bought this. Two problems. The jiggly lines are back and it feels like on old battery powered stylus on my old surface pro 3. And due to the metal tip the lines aren’t as aligned. I tried the metal tip on my iPad mini and the lines still don’t align perfectly, but the jiggly lines are gone. My mini has a paperlike on it.
@TomFroese
@TomFroese 2 ай бұрын
I got jiggly lines with my regular Apple Pencil tip and no screen protector. I have no idea what causes it, but I wonder if it’s not the screen protector at all? Have you tried switching the metal tip?
@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi 2 ай бұрын
@@TomFroese the jiggly lines are there because of the grid system of the pressure sensors on screen. There is some kind of calibration manufacturers have to do to fix it. Must be an expensive process as it seems to be an issue with cheaper devices. But to an extent even Wacom Cintiqs have it. With iPads I don’t think it’s that bad, but depending on screen protectors the problem can get bigger. I went through a bunch of no name brands until I found one that fixed it. This was was for my pro. Paperlike sent me one out (I had a 100k account on TikTok, and they seem to find me through that) and I used it on my mini, and it works great, but the price is a bit high. There are cheaper ones just as good, so I wouldn’t have to say buy that, but if money isn’t as much of an issue just time, that’s an easy one to recommend. But I find all these screen protectors to get dirty pretty quick. The jiggle is worse, but it’s borderline and I’m still going to use it for now. The fact it’s removable and I can put it back on is a good enough reason to stick with rock paper scissor for now.

Since you state the scratches come from the metal pencil tips. Can this be used accurately with just the Apple Pencil original tips? And would that stop the scratches from happening? Could find any reviews or answers for this product. Please and thank you
@TomFroese
@TomFroese 4 ай бұрын
It’s just not the same experience. The whole point is that the metal tips give you half of the natural paper like drawing experience. You can buy textured screen protectors for much cheaper and use your regular tips, but RPP is a bundle that comes with the tips and the protector, and you pay more for that.

Thanks for your comment! It can be frustrating to pay full price for a product only for them to update it a few months later. At the same time, we have gotten used to most companies upgrading and thus feeling stuck with an older/outdated model. One way of viewing this is that they listened to their customer's complaints and did something about it in v2 - better than not doing something? They did have a beta version of the product before they went live to the general public with v1 though. I recommend you reach out to Astropad with your concerns. They are really great with their customer service, as far as I can tell.
