ROCK & STEEL [] Fire Starting

How to start a fire with flint and steel, this can be done with many high carbon steel knives on the flat, back edge and a tough rock such as a quartz. This was primarily done before the time of ferrocerium rods (metal match) and an abundant supply of matches, think mountain man time frame. The steel needs to be soft enough that when struck, hot shavings are created from the friction of the two colliding.

NW Primate showed me that besides a carbon bladed knife, a Silky saw works great too. And if you don't have access to flint or chert, quarts (those white crystal like stones) works as well. I always carry some flax rope to pry apart and fluff up as an impromptu tinder bundle when all other natural tinders are wet. Keep up the good work Leif! I dig your video's 🙂

Leatherman Wave, been using that in the field for 15 years. I use the Leatherman Surge as my home tool but is equally, if not better because it is more robust.

Ya know your done with sear when your charring an old issued belt for a fire starting video😆 maybe you can find some wood conch like back in the day they used to carry fire?

Lol! Done with that belt! Good idea with carrying fire, I should do that. One time the smoldering tinder fungus dried the surrounding wet tinder and almost lit my pack on fire because I didn’t want to carry it in my hand….

@@SurvivalSchoolHouse there’s gotta be a way to carry embers. Or just carry that conch with you. It has been found on a few mummified humans from way back. But yeah I wood ent try it 😁
