In celebration of the band’s release of the 40th Anniversary Reissue of Chronic Town

This was about ten years after Bill Berry left R.E.M., following his cerebral aneurysm onstage in Switzerland. Recently, when the band (including Bill) gave an interview around their induction into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame, Bill tearfully said that despite the necessity of his leaving because of his health, he regretted leaving the band anyway. Watching him here, somehow his delight in providing the foundation for R.E.M. comes right through. I'm glad he survived, but it's too bad that he had to do it, for his own sake and ours.

I cried the night I watched this in a good way. I couldn't believe that such a huge band would play such an obscure track from an ep. I love them so much..

They are killing it here! How many artsy Southern weirdos who love art and guitar music found solace in their music’s arms.

And it is the first song REM ever wrote and recorded.

Bill Berry’s genius is fully on display here. He single handedly makes is all sound normal again. For one night, they had their mojo back.

I was a college radio DJ when this came out... Phenomenal that they would play this at the induction. It was my first intro... in addition to Driver 8 ...

Thank God Bill could join the Boys that evening, it wouldn't be the same without him. This song is so different with actual words being sung.

They just weren't the same band without Bill Berry, all credit to those who attempted to replace him. He was incredible.

Bill Berry is playing there in this performance, way after he'd quit the band. So cool

I agree. Bill Berry makes this band rock. One of the great rocknroll drummers.

I'm in agreement with a lot of people's comments. I got emotional when this was first broadcasted....sill am now as I watch this. I was barely 20 when this EP came out. Brings back wonderful memories.

One of the single greatest debuts from any rock band ever. The sheer intensity behind Stipe's vocal--and he's nowhere near having to screech them to get his words across--backed of course by, still, one of the genre's most interesting, unique instrumentals. The Athens scene really was something brilliant.

Always loved this song. One of the greatest bands ever and for sure the best band the U.S. has ever spawned!

The are absolutely amazing. Will argue "The Band" "The Beach Boys" "The Temptations"
@Noname-v2w5w3 ай бұрын
@@dougleclaire9424 I like all of those bands but I feel like REM were more well-rounded. They kind of had it all, musicianship, poetry, sensitivity, accessibility while also remaining a “college” band….they are actually not even my favorite band but for me they are one of the best ever….I would put The Who at the top of the heap but REM are up there!

It's amazing how when I print the lyrics and read along they all seem so clear where in the past I've only picked up random words and then the chorus.

But they made it clear when they called it a day that this is it. They're not going to have indefinite farewell tours like many longtime bands or what's left of them are doing.

This is not so much a deep cut as a deep, deep, deep cut. I love the fact that REM pulled out this old gem from Chronic Town and played it over 25 years after they first recorded it.
