There’s a cool backstory to this… U2 has been around almost as long as a Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith. But they’re in different age groups. They were only teenagers when they started. When they were young Patti Smith was one of their favorite artists and major influences. Even in how she’s such a physical singer.. just like Bono. So when Bono said “this is the song we wish we’d written“ and “we had to make something special happen tonight“ that wasn’t just hollow rhetoric. He meant it. The 4 guys in the band grew up absolutely adoring Patti Smith

Some songs sound like they had always existed, like there was a need for them to be there. This is one of them.

I can definitely agree with that about this song, & I feel the same way - Esp this version. I made a similar comment about the video of Metallica Playing "Sweet Jane" with Lou Reed. That it was a song that was meant to "happen" long B4 The Velvet Underground ever existed, & the version with Metallica IS amazing. I don't feel that way about most songs, it has to be something "special" that I can't REALLY describe here. And not every band HAS one. But this song IS one of them.

@@shannonschaerer1010 I did not even know this song, though I liked some Lou Reed work. Thank you for introducing me to it. Have you ever heard Bob Dylan and The Band's live 1974 performance of Ballad of a Thin Man?

@fabiopaolobarbieri2286 From the double live "Before the Flood" album? It IS an excellent version of THAT song as well. It's funny cause when I said, "Not every band has one", I was thinking that Dylan may have a COUPLE of those "forever" songs. I really like that whole album. You have a Gr8 taste in music!! The song "I shall be released" is another, & on The Bands "The Last Waltz" album it is like that as well. Also, from the Bib Dylan "The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration" Live album, The version of "My Back Pages" with Dylan, McGuinn, Petty, Young, Clapton, & Harrison all Prefoming together is another amazing version of THAT song. Thanks for getting back. It's always good to meet someone who knows a truly Gr8 Song when they hear it!! Have a wonderful day!!

@fabiopaolobarbieri2286 Just thought of a couple more forever songs. Supertramps "A Fools Overture" & its' live version on their live album "Paris" is something that seems like it has always been here. So is Gerry Raffertys' "Baker Street" from '77. Peace - & Keep on Rockin'!!

For anyone that might be interested, here's Bruce's original lyrics (so far as I can tell): Take me now, baby, here as I am Pull me close, try and understand I work all day, out in the hot sun Break my back, till the morning comes Come on now, try and understand The way I feel when I’m in your hands Take me now as the sun descends They can’t hurt you now They can’t hurt you now They can’t hurt you now Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to lust Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to us What I got, I have earned What I’m not, baby I have learned Desire and hunger is the fire I breathe Just stay in my bed till the morning comes Come on now, try and understand The way I feel when I’m in your hands Take me now as the sun descends They can’t hurt you now They can’t hurt you now They can’t hurt you now Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to lust Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to us Your love is here and now The vicious circle turns and burns without Though I cannot live forgive me now The time has come to take this moment and They can't hurt us now They can't hurt us now Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to lust Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to us Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to lust Because the night belongs to lovers Because the night belongs to us (x2)

@eggman1269 If you want to know it exactly: Bruce started to write in 1977 but couldn't finish it, so his enineer Jimmy Iovine came u with the idea to give it to Patti. She finished it and made a hit Thanks for uploading. One of the best versions of this song an I would have given everything to be with on stage on that night.

This live Rock & Roll Hall of Fame music collaboration of U2 Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith for Because the Night is a music wizardry sensation, I wish that I would have known about this version multiple years ago when it was first released, at least I know about this collaboration now.

Just finished reading my late husband's copy of 'Just Kids'. Listening to this powerhouse version seemed a good epilogue. Patti, Bruce & U2-amazing 🌌 💙

Not sure this sounds good to me but it is definitely a force - so much power and energy and soul. I’m obviously missing something but this isn’t something I’d listen to without being able to see them. 😆

I remember asking my music teacher why do we have to study music? . Her answer was we Have to learn to sing to praise the God Almighty 🙏🕊️. However people got greedy. Took it to next level. Knew there was a lot of money to be made and that's where it all started to falter 🕊️🌎🕊️ until Bono came along.👋 Then he made a rock b roll band. But behind it was going to be a sublime message about love,❤ God which we never want to talk about, and learning to live together in peace and harmony. This man has taken my breath away. I have waited so long for someone to come into my view and say all that's going on in.🌎 This world today has to stop. When children' start killing children with guns made for military causes, how bad is that ? The first time it occurred and Columbine we all are crying and blaming the parents and then it was laid to rest since then, I believe we've had at least four other incidents of children killing children and personal. See anything happening? No change in the government. No change with the people. Why?. When 911 came and the terrorists blew up my father's working place we still didn't surrender. Instead of changing who we were and what people hated about us, we want to go looking for a man ain't bin laden and put a dollar sign over his head to kill him. That took 10 years. Great progress 🌪️🌪️ What will it take for everyone to open up their eyes and say there's got to be a change and it has to happen now!! Bono knows it has to happen now and he is singing to send out the message to all of us and I hope we're all listening because if we don't, they'll be more overdoses of young 19-year-old young adults, they'll be more terrorism, there will be more rapes and murders and corrupt politicians. Illegal immigrants, drug cartels of that our leaders of our country are aware of. And was enough money or letting it happen It's endless how many bad situations we are in and we all just come home, sit in front of that TV and listen to whatever they're telling us. We have to tell 💯👿Ourselves it's time to make a change. One person at a time and Bono's doing just that. I bow down to Bono and the emEdge for trying so hard to get that message out there. I hope these people in our world 🌎understand and absorb what they are trying to do. Again God bless you and your family and in God I trust 🙏🕊️🌎 Amen.
