Such a great song! The "steel horse" reference, although typically a reference to a motorcycle, is in this case referring to their tour bus and/or tour plane. The use of the "cowboy mentality" to describe being on the road. An outlaw touring around with a "loaded six string" on his back, talking about his guitar. The lyric line of "I've seen a million faces, and I rocked them all" is about the shows they played and people they entertained. So this entire song is about being alone on the road, during a LONG tour with no rest for the weary. Catchy tune all around.

He is outlining the similarities of the cowboy life style and rock star life...from traveling all the time, when finally arriving at your location going crazy, partying, getting all the women, drinking all the liquor, etc...it's very well written.

"Six string on my back" refers to the guitar; "steel horse" is the tour bus. This song uses Old West cowboy imagery to describe the lonely life of a rock star. At the time, starting with their debut album in 1984, Bon Jovi played about 300 shows a year, using the remaining time to work on albums. When it came time to write for their third album, Slippery When Wet, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this song about what they knew: performing to lots of people who all blended together after a while.

Its because,, albums used to cost 2 hours pay,and they wore out. 8 tracks were 15-20 bucks, and they wore out QUICK. Television was super thin, and inconsistent,, if you saw something , you likely wouldn't see it twice. Everyone talked about the Beatles,,but we really didn't see them, for 30 years, till streaming came around. Now you can watch or hear anything you want. As long as you can remember it.

I have seen Bon Jovi so many times over the years. Before Jon had kids, he was asked when he had a family, what would he want his kids to know about him and his legacy. He said he would have them listen to this song. It told of him, his life and a song he was most proud of at the time. Steel horse is the tour bus. The song is about being away touring when they went straight for a few years, and the got burned out and missed their families.

The guitar parts are played on a 12 string Acoustic Rickenbacker guitar. Even though the “steel horse” being the tour bus is a romantic idea, the “Steel Horse” IS a motorcycle.

I love that you both just want to say, “That was such a good song” Started with a 12 string acoustic accompanied by a 6 string acoustic before the electric cones in later.

Slippery When Wet was an EPIC album. There wasn’t a weak song on the album! I had it on cassette then also New Jersey. Bon Jovi is in my opinion an under appreciated band

From the movies “ YOUNG GUNS” and “ young guns 2” If you like westerns, watch them. I watch them both a lot. LOL may sound corny but I love the movies!

The story is that they wanted to use this song for Young Guns 2, but Jon Bon Jovi didn't think the lyrics fit, so he wrote Blaze of Glory for them.

This is also the opening for Alaskas deadliest catch show. Before any other commenters decide to bash the show. I live in Alaska and have crab fished out of Dutch and Akutan Alaska. This song really goes with what we did.

They use to use this song as a intro to the show Deadliest Catch about snow crab fishing on the Bering sea. I don’t think they use it anymore.

I remember it being a big hit in high school . I forgot all about it and how good of a song it was until 2005 when it was used at the beginning of Deadliest Catch . It was the perfect song for that show.
