Hi Matt, Happy New Year! I am an advanced beginner having only played Ukulele for just over a year now. I first started with the Tenor which I still play a little on everyday, but when I discovered the Baritone Uke two months after starting on the Tenor, that was it for me, my Goldilocks instrument. I really wanted to play guitar especially classical style guitar, but it was far too advanced for me as my first stringed instrument, so I went to the Tenor Ukulele. The Baritone is the best of both worlds for me. It sounds like a parlor sized guitar but only has 4 strings and is easier to make chord shapes and switch between chords. I actually started my New Year goals early, back in the beginning of December, and I have added daily parlor guitar practice and more Tenor Uke to my practice schedule. I still spend the majority of my time trying to improve my strumming and finger picking on the Baritone Ukulele while spending hours playing a handful my favorite songs from a library of around 50 songs. Another big goal of mine is to stay consistent with the rhythm and work with a metronome. I also have been concentrating on playing slower with more emotion. Best of luck with all your goals and I am so excited for you playing the Baritone and look forward to your upcoming Baritone videos as well as your upcoming Baritone album.

Wise words, good challenges! Here are mine: #1 "Refresh & Refine" - two songs I worked on years ago but never quite got to performance-ready. "La Gitanita" from RC101, and my own mash-up of "Smile" combining Eduardo Garcia's chord melody arrangement with Christopher Davis-Shannon's for RC101 (the two versions have totally different feel, making a dramatic mood shift in performance). #2 "Discover & Explore" - flat picking on electric ukulele. Also exploring my new Flight Fireball baritone. #3 "Challenge & Grow" - more public performances, singing and playing together with my wife, Heidi. We are scheduled for a 15-minute feature set in February at the Vancouver Folk Song Society, which is a huge and scary leap from doing single songs at open mic events and parties.

I’ve been playing for about a year and a half. Many of the songs I’ve played while learning, I’ve mostly played chord melodies. This year I want to revisit those songs using fingerpicking. I also really want to work on Spanish style, and being less horrified at playing in front of people Lol I love your last goal because my goal is to work on playing using sheet music. I mostly play by ear and I love it, but playing with sheet music will also push me to play songs I haven’t heard before.

So magical! Loved hearing about your goals, Matt! I also intend to directly steal some of your and Emiliano's goals. 😉😂 Those baritone songs were soooooo beautiful! So moving with a lovely, deep sound. Will we have Baritone-Blast-flavored "Instant Noodles" this year?! 😅 I wrote about my goals on the Rock Class 101 forums, but in keeping with the absolute insanity of 2025 so far (only a few days in) I already kind of accomplished one of them! I tried to play at the UU open mic last Thursday, but the sound didn't work. Fixing my sound being another goal this year, it seems I might just accomplish *both* of those goals by next month (when I'm trying to fix my sound to try playing again there)! 😯 So that's pretty crazy. I love these lessons and this group of people at Rock Class 101! Here's to another year of ukulele fun and delights, and J.T. Smithens' shenanigans! 😂😂😅🎇🎉🎊
