Queen’s John Deacon was in the same studio where Chic’s Bernard Edwards was laying down the the bass line for Good Times and filed it away for future use.

This song samples "Good Times" by CHIC released in 1979 which predates "Another one bites the dust" by about a year.

So thaaaaaat's why it sounded so familiar! Nice!
@robertm39518 ай бұрын
The bass line is a combination of "Good Times" and "Here Comes That Sound Again" by British studio group Love De-Luxe, a disco hit in 1979 which they somehow thought was a big enough change not to pay royalties to either band. It is actually a recording of an in-house band. Nile Rogers got publishing credit but he did not get an artist credit since it is not his playing.

I find the whole history of hip hop fascinating as it stems out of the DJs spinning records, and trying to find new ways to keep the people out on the dance floor. About that bass line, like Duck said, a sample of “Good Times”. The reason you may have gotten “Another One Bites The Dust” vibes is because the bassist for Queen was supposedly hanging out with CHIC around the time of their recording of “Good Times”

You learn something new every day-thanks for the history lesson! Very cool to see how the genres intertwine.

Please react to the full 14 minute version of Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill gang. It was played at clubs School Dances and Skating Rinks. Everyone learned the words to the 7 min version. I was 15 years old when the song was released. When people called into the Radio stations to play the song people would say play that Hip Hop Song. That is one of the reasons Rap is also known as Hip Hop.

i love the context in which you're putting to this song, because of your hearing it for the first time, and not knowing the history. i was pretty young when this song came out, but i remember how ubiquitous it was. Hip hop as a whole didn't emphasize the words as much as it does now. It was a combination of the four elements- breaking, deejaying, rhyming and art. Toasting in Jamaica was one of the direct descendants of rap, as well as Pigmeat Markham, The Last Poets, James Brown and Gil Scott-Heron, even though those are not technically considered rap. Deejays used to rock parties in the Bronx, among other places, and just loop the breaks in songs with the two turntables, to keep people dancing. But these breaks were also invitations for people to show their skills on the mic. As others said in the comments, 'Rappers Delight' was a sample of Chic's 'Good Times.' Both Nile Rogers (guitar) and Bernard Edwards (bass) were massive inspirations to bands like Queen, Duran Duran, as well as folks like Johnny Marr. i think what came out of this whole thing was that labels like Sugarhill and Enjoy had house bands that played the songs. 'Rappers Delight' did have its share of controversy in that Big Bank Hank's lines were jacked from Grandmaster Caz, and Sylvia Robinson (who ran Sugarhill) never gave him credit. They didn't even change the lyrics. "Check it out, I'm the C-A-S-A-N, the O-V-A, And the rest is F-L-Y..." Caz ended forgiving Hank (who has since passed), but it's still not right that happened. Sugar Hill Gang could be seen as the first 'hip hop boy band' of sorts, because even though people may have known each other they were not all rapping together before Sylvia Robinson was like, 'Y'all wanna make a record?' Your comment about the Doctor Seuss-style rhyme was funny, because a lot of rap (especially today) DOES sound like that. The 12" of Rappers Delight (which i have in a box in another state) has both the single version, and the full 14, 15 minute version, which has the whole drum breakdown at the beginning, and throughout the song. It made me chuckle to see you laughing about the 'bad food' rhyme. That actually is the best part of the song. i'm kinda surprised you didn't catch the queer antagonism of the superman rhyme, with the 'pantyhose'. A lot of these songs are fun, but have elements like that in it. Fun review, Bryce!

Taking a friend's girlfriend has nothing to do with a specific culture. Surely you know that such things happen regardless of one's culture. Also, this was like free-style rap, MCs used to do this at clubs. It really helped them engage morw with the audience. I think it may be how this genre really began to get its legs.

I just came across this and gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this video! I usually abhor frequent pauses on reaction vids but getting a musicians take on a title you've never dissected was entertaining man. This record dropped during my sophomore year in High school and as a comic fan, that Superman bar had me like 😳!!! LOL!!! While I have yet to run through the comments except for the appropriate music credit given to Chic's hit "Good Times", the track on "Rapper's Delight" wasn't a sample, it was performed by a studio band. The backstory of "Rapper's Delight" and the formation of the "Sugar Hill Gang is indeed one of Hip Hop legend. Great job! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXeliYWLjNeUgdEsi=kDFVYDNmwPJlDF7J

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a kind comment. This is the energy I love to see on KZbin, and I’m glad you enjoyed it. What was it like to witness the birth of a new genre when you were still a kid? Was it an immediate connection, or was there any hesitancy?

@@MidnightNotion immediate love of the genre. I group up a BIG fan of Funk artists. Alot of Funk bands had almost a Rock hybrid feel to them and just being a pure music lover I was really into actual instrumentation. At that time Disco was Huge. I wasn't overly crazy about disco because of the constant "one beat up and down" as we called it back then. Rap would combine elements of both and the Rhymes back then I thought were not only skillful but the energy was always positive. I could go on but one of the reasons I commented was your presentation was just genuinely amicable . I grew up in Boston but was schooled in the 'burbs' so I definitely heard my share of Aerosmith, AC/DC, KISS, Pink Floyd ect, ect, while I gave them Parliament Funkadelic, Confunkshun, Cameo, Earth Wind & Fire and more. I'm a near 35 year broadcasting veteran radio personality having done drive time radio in Boston and NYC. I appreciate the response. Keep at it, don't be deterred by the negativity that seems to surround us daily. Keep that energy, GOD knows we literally need it. Peace to you my friend.

Such good memories of the late 90's, listening to the radio and hearing this song randomly come on, while playing n64 or whatever. Pretty sure it was a studio version though, not the live version you reacted to. They used to play older stuff like this, Prince & Joni Mitchell on the weekends. Miss those days.

Keith Cowboy came out with "Throw your hands in the air". Pretty much none of Hank's rhymes are original. "The Casanova legend must have been true" comes from Grand Master Cas who was "The grand master with the three MCs". Notice that Hank is only with two other MCs.
