Hey everybody! So this is the first vid back since the fires here in LA and I just wanted to again thank everyone for all the kind comments and thoughts. My immediate family and I avoided the fires and my Sister In Law and family have found a place to live in the area while they rebuild. The Laurel Canyon locations have all been spared and thank the lord we finally had a little rain. Peace to you all and enjoy the vid. Tim.

I love watching your videos dude! I'm a middle-aged man originally from Flatbush, Brooklyn, but I grew up in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles from the late 1970s through the middle 2000s. I've been currently employed on the Sunset Strip for the past twelve years, and I've partied at places like the Whisky, Viper Room, Rainbow, and the old House Of Blues. I've also visited the Alta Cienega motel, but, never the Jim Morrison room. I'm also VERY proud to say that the legendary, brilliant, and talented songwriter and guitarist from The Doors Robby Krieger has been a close personal friend of mine for the past 30-plus years. Being a rock and roll fan and historian for most of my life, I appreciate all of your videos about the great history of Los Angeles. Which alongside the great NYC are both the most important cities in the world when it comes to modern music! Keep up the good work!

I'm so glad you commented with the cool story! I've always loved Robby and thought it was a shame that he is hardly ever mentioned in the "Greatest Guitarist Ever" discussions. About 40 years ago I was standing in a long line at City National Bank up at the end of Sunset and Robbie was in front of me. I got to talking to him and he couldn't have been nicer and cooler and he even said hi again on his way out. It doesn't seem like much but it made a big impression on me. Anyways, thanks again. Cheers!

@RockessentialTim Thanks for reaching out! Yeah, man. I met Robby as a client at my job working in the Optical industry in Sherman Oaks. Although I didn't know who he was at the time when I first met him, I had heard of the band Doors of course. He was such a humble and classy man. He invited me to his gig at the old Club Lingerie on Sunset and his guitar playing was so fluid, unique, slick, polished, blues-oriented, rockin', jazzy, and funky that he blew my fuckin' mind! Robby Krieger is easily one of the most gifted and versatile guitar players in history! He's in my top twenty list easily! We exchanged phone numbers back in 1992 and have been friends ever since.

Hey Tim. I just found you last week and have been obsessed. I live in Nashville but have family in Hollywood area and have spent a lot of time in LA over the last few decades. LA can get a bad rap but the "hills" have always drawn me back. Mixed with my love for 60's-70's rock, there is somthing almost spiritual about a lot of the area. Laurel Canyon is my fav. Much love and keep it up.

When I was a teen living in Detroit I used to listen to WABX. They played a lot of more obscure stuff back then but they always included The Doors and they didn't just play the hits. I grew up in east Hollywood in the 60s. Earlier today I was looking on Google Maps at places I used to live and also at the Catholic grammar school I attended. All the places are shabby and rundown - just like most of the places in your video. Hollywood, like the rest of Los Angeles, consumes it's past by constantly tearing down buildings and building new ones over them. Slowly the past is disappearing. Good thing you are documenting these places while they still exist.

@@RockessentialTim yes, Jerry was a “first chair” player for sure. He played bass on Anne Murray’s first number one record, the song Snowbird. He also played with Tanya Tucker and many other artists I’m sure who needed solid bass playing. His tenure with Elvis was about a decade, from ‘68 to ‘77. In 1972 my family took an extended vacation in LA . My dad had uncles that lived out there. We went to Disney Land and took some tours of Hollywood and the studios. We saw the house fronts for the Munsters and Leave It to Beaver that I remember which was the same house they used for Marcus Welby MD . We saw Don Knotts and Dan Blocker rehearsing for Dons new show. My dad had stayed at the same birding house in Alpine Texas in the room that Dan Blocker stayed in so that was interesting. So in 1972 I toured as a kid around some of these areas possibly in the same era that some of this history was being made or shortly after. My dad remembered the house where Sharron Tate lived. Just 4 years after that happened. Wow how time flies. I would’ve been about 10 years old. Awsome videos.

I am a bit surprised to. They tried to get it designated as a historic house but the powers that be turned it down and I talked to the next door neighbors who told me it was being torn down and that was well over a year ago. I was up there recently and its still standing. Boarded up but still standing.

I put a lot of TLC into the music and its nice to hear someone appreciate it. Thank you. One of these days I'll do a video of the process, its really not complicated at all. I program drums and use Digital Performer as my DAW and I do the parts one at a time until its done. A song is usually about a 3 or 4 hour process from inception to finished mix. Then of course I mix it again 10 more times til it sounds exactly the same as it did on the first mix!

I grew up in Panorama City in the San Fernando Valley. On Van Nuys Blvd in Panorama City was Phil Ann’s Moongate. He was Korean-born but decided to open a Chinese Restaurant. His brother Ralph and sister ran the restaurant. It was my father’s favorite watering hole. I had not known that the Cobain home had been owned by Phil Ahn. Thank you for taking us along on the tour.

@@RockessentialTim I had to check the dates online, but that restaurant was open from 1954 through 1990. Elements of the restaurant still exist on Van Nuys Blvd. there’s a building there that has this huge round window and that was part of the original restaurant. It was very close to the Americana theater. I am familiar with Sound City recording. And technically, I think that was in Van Nuys closer to the 405 / San Diego Freeway side of things.
