TAOFLEDERMAUS

Күн бұрын

I have had these two slugs for months now and we finally got around to shooting them. They are made out of aluminum with a heavy carbide core in the nose.
Since we only had two of them, we shot the plain one through rifling, and the one loaded with BB's without any rifling. There was quite a difference in their flight characteristics.

+Robert Schuster This is what I was thinking, the spin would cause the holes to interact with the air in unwanted ways while spinning, but they would (theoretically) improve the accuracy of a round shot from a smooth bore gun (putting bbs in the holes just seemed childish to me, "Ooh, lets pile stuff in this experimental round that we only have two of that isn't designed to have things stuffed in it!")
@RPSchonherr
@RPSchonherr 8 жыл бұрын
Sean Madson I totally agree, they defeated the rounds design in both tests. To me this round looks like a Yart where the air flow through the holes hits that fin in the rear to stabilize it. The physics of super sonic speed may not allow that but we'll never know from this video.

looks like the shape of the tail may be what caused it to fly in that fashion. maybe changing the shape of the tail or removing it completely would allow the slug to fly straighter.

@sharxbyte

Something that I've noticed is that despite what you would expect from darts and other objects thrown at significantly lower velocity, the oddball slugs seem to work much better when they are as short as possible (like when the 3d printed slugs were cut down). If he could remake them without the tail, I think you would have better results.

Both his test were invalid becuase he did not use them as intended. First shot was with riffling, that put a spin on the round pretty much guaranteeing it to mess up with those holes reacting to the air with a spin, second round had the holes plugged up with BB's... I'm not saying the round will work if not modified, just that we cant tell from these tests.

+hf117j It wouldn't work. Bean-bags and other rounds are loaded with lighter powder charges, so they don't hit lethally. If you fired a bean bag with a full power charge, it'd go right into the person. If you fired a slug with a reduced bean-bag charge, it'd break bones, maybe penetrate, leave horrible bruises. Both bean bag and reduced charge are required. But that means that bean bag and other LL rounds won't cycle in a semi-automatic shotgun, which are designed for full power shells. That's one big reason why LE units still use pump-action guns, because they can handle whatever ammo you put into them. An AA-12 wouldn't cycle with bean-bag rounds.

hey tao, I have a suggestion. in most shotshells, somewhere near 30% of the shotshell's internal length is compromised of just the wad. there are other shells which drastically decrease size while not sacrificing power by reducing the wad's size significantly. an example is the aguila minishell. however, such a design has never been applied to a full size shotshell. if the wad on a normal 2 3/4 shell or 3 in shell was downsized like the augila's, it would allow much more shot and powder- so more power. naturally this is 100% safe and you should totally try it.
@Skwisgar2322
@Skwisgar2322 8 жыл бұрын
the problem that Tactical G-Code is encountering is he is designing projectiles that might work very well at low velocity, but when you are firing them this fast aerodynamics start to act differently. suddenly you have to consider the previously negligable pressure on the nose vs the stabilization fins, among other factors.
@StickyIckyOOHWAY
@StickyIckyOOHWAY 8 жыл бұрын

***** So my point is in order to give a true test of it's efficacy you should not have used bb's in the smooth bore.
@Robert53area
@Robert53area 8 жыл бұрын
+Roy Gould ima take a guess you sticking the BBs in is why it tumbled through the air too. you messed up the slugs aerodynamics, the BBs add more weight to the front causing it to be unbalanced and tuble through the air. and the rifling put a spin on it... the manufacture probably intended for this type of slug to be fired by a smooth bore shotgun

+TAOFLEDERMAUS It is like you didnt choose a 'control group' for your scientific endeavor when it came to testing this shot. You didnt try shooting the odd pod through a smooth-bore without tampering with it. The way it was likely designed for. Its like playing an xbox game , but with the cd covered in penut butter and pondering why it didnt work. THen you put a regular xbox game in a ps2 and wondering why it didnt work. but still, good video. I enjoy watching these.

I wonder if the machinist made the holes at a diagonal to encourage a spin through airflow. Granted it would have to be in the same direction of the rifling. But then again it would be interesting to see it both ways.

When I was in Nam We had a 12 Gauge Round called the "Fleshet" and it had like little Arrows in it that did Whistle too. This Art Deco "Rocket Pod" wasn't the first to Whistle. By the way, the Fleshet Round hit what it was Aimed at.

Wow, hope the range owner wasn't upset over the flight of these oddball rounds! Both went pretty high, heck that second one looks like it was higher than the berm for a bit in the slow mo, thank goodness it dropped at the end. Again, neat looking rounds from Tim, it's just too bad they keep flying wonky.

Try again with a smoothbore shotgun and no bbs in the holes of the slug. Those holes channeled the air like vents to the back of the slug and stabilized it in flight as we saw in the first shot. The rifling more than likely caused it to fly off as the vents are straight on the slug. The second shot, the bbs had the slug off balance and blocked those airvents that would have stabilized it in flight. A good design, just need to think about it before shooting ;)

I think this was for a smoothbore barrel and the holes were for good air flow so the bbs made it go crazy and the rifled choke did so.

The round is a smart idea however the only issue that I see with getting it to function is its shape. The point on the projectile will not allow for air to be evenly dispersed through the holes because it is a point. It creates a vacuum that is rotated around the front of the round rather than the rear which is why we see it fly off in a fixed direction. I think that if the round featured a convex nose to it rather than the traditional "point" that the vacuum would be directed more towards the sides and rear of the round allowing it to fly more true and allow for more of an effect we traditional see from rifling. Another aspect to consider is the holes in the round may not be the correct dimension. As air becomes compressed and forced through the hole, the wall in the hole will cut the wind and cause it to loose spin and eventually trajectory. If the holes were made to look more like cones with the smaller opening at the front of the round, I believe it would maintain more spin from rifling as well as keep less air pressure from effecting the tail end of the projectile by more evenly dispersing air pressure.

This bullet did make a sound. I remember the conversation about the whistleing sound on your totally hollow bullet. Now I wonder if these bullets would make an even better whistle sound, if the tail is finned to make it fly straight and the holes at the top would get a smaller diameter from the top to the bottom. I´ve got just a basic knowledge of english. I hope I explained my next type of bullet right so you understand what I mean. This video did more than I expected. The first shot did a "whistle" too. Maybe I just heard the airflow. But the second one was surprising for me. I didn´t think that the BBs make its sound louder.
@wayneair
@wayneair 5 жыл бұрын
should've swapped them. the one that allowed airflow through it seems like it would stabilize itself, therefore been shot in a smooth barrel. the BB plugged holes slug, no airflow through, in the rifled choke (or full rifled barrel) to see if it would stabilize.
