You guys are awesome! You make my Friday evenings! The organic look of cob houses is way more appealing than the straight and square approach. I was so taken by the look I decided to renovate my apartment in a more organic look... Turns out that my shares in the building do not allow me to do so and they had to tell me AFTER I had removed a wall😁. The legal implications of renovating an apartment has brought about the decision to relocate to a farming town in Eastern Cape (in South Africa) where my brother and I are planing on urban homesteading while running running our business😊. Thanks for the good feels. Take care and keep up the great work!

Making the lean 2 off my tiny barn house N2 a FL porch and this is just the thing 2 heat it and maybe cook some limas or soup on it on those cold days. My children ask me how I come up with these ideas U've been sharing with them? I tell them from a very nice family N AZ or NM that lets us take a peek N2 their projects while they R building them! I know sometimes I may seem over enthusiastic but I do enjoy your DIY building and etc. They give me so many ideas on things I can still do at my age! Have a great weekend!

Thank you for sharing. Did you know that this is the first time you've commented on how well Garen's rocket stove works. Now that winter's over... It would be great if you would give an overview of the individual cob bedrooms and how well the heaters worked (or maybe didn't) and if you had a ''do over'' if you'd do some things different. Did she say they used linseed oil to seal the cob? That stuff is really flammable! Use sodium silicate to seal the cob. You mix 1 part of the stuff with 3 parts water. Coat it let it dry. Do that again a couple more times and it's sealed and it's not a fire hazard.

Haley E if you haven't building it all ready, you need to talk to someone that builds fireplaces. Find out what to use over a wood floor, how far you should build your firebox off the floor. I've rebuild mine once so far. I used a black stove pipe in stove with cob and wire over the pipe in the barrel. It failed horribly. So did the fire brick under my fireplace. So far I have built a fire brick riser off the stove and now I have fire brick, 3 inches concrete, fire brick, 3 inches concrete then the starting of the rocket fire box. I'm hoping that fixed it but I will do cut away inspections this coming summer .

Just for future reference those are fired clay bricks not fire brick. Fire brick usually refers to foundry brick that's made of some aluminum/silica mixture to withstand crazy amounts of heat for forging/smelting purposes

Great effort but wrong materials . Even if you used 1/8 inch steel pipe for the center shaft into the barrel it wouldn't last long because of the high temps ,plus using galvanized steel air ducts ? Bad idea . Otherwise it looks really good . Also please make sure and use proper safety equipment next time like gloves and eye protection . Sheet metal can cut just as deep as a razor blade and grinding brickwork send debris everywhere . You seem like nice people who are very creative and I hate seeing good people getting hurt.

Great stove! but small suggestion: put the air inlet from outside near stove burning chamber inlet. Amount of air needed by stove is around 1 m3 for each 1 kg of wood. So if you will not provide stove with air from outside it will take air from home and will cool it down:)

Hate to be a party pooper but if those shiney pipe components are galvanized or zinc coated? You are aware they'll give off toxins when expose to high temperatures. Giving that even clean burning rocket stove produce creosote at start up and occasions when fuel is not perfectly seasoned or just a poor burning wood etc. Creosote will build up and if ignited that pipe that is only meant to carry warm air from a furnace or cold air return is going to gas off first and then burn out. Temperatures can exceed 1500 degrees in a chimney fire.

Hi from Argentina. After doing an extensive search on how best build a rocket mass heater, we have found your videos as the best instructional source available online. In particular, what we like from your way of building, is like us here in the Andes Mountains, you need to solve a problem improvising. This requires using whatever is available at hand, not necessarily exactly what the experts recommend, but things that could also work well and get the job done... I love your style..... It is an old saying ... the best is the enemy of the good. Our sons, my wife and I will build a rocket mass heater based on the one you built that was partially buried underground. It will heat a greenhouse. Many thanks for sharing your amazing life experiences. Best regards Francisco & Jeannine

Did that pipe chimney really work? I used one in my stove and it turned into metal that breaks like glass. I also had to dismantle my rocket mass heater and up grade the material between the floor and the bottom of the stove. I found by inspection that the heater got so hot that it had started to smolder the wood floor under my stove. These are high speed stoves and should be treated as such. I'll never get rid of my stove but I will be vigilant in keeping a eye on it and hope if anyone else has had this problem. Post what you done to fix it.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your sharing. Do you think that I can build a rocket stove in my house, but there already is wood on the floor? No problem for the weight of the stove, there is rock under the house, my concern is about build a rocket stove inside and not make the floor to damaged because of the differents steps of build. It's is an old country house...

+grizz270 "For a bunch of hippies"??? Seriously? Did you have to go there with that? Don't you think that is kinda stereotyping? I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with hippies, but how you worded that was a bit offensive in my mind. This family is striving to be more eco friendly, and self-sustaining! I believe more people should do what they are doing! We only have 1 Earth to live on, more people should be more conscious of how we treat it, and help it to thrive! Take care of the Earth, and the Earth will take care of you! Call me a hippy if you want... I prefer to think of it as caring for the planet that you live on!
