They just made the walls thicker. The Washington Monument has No steel in it, but the walls are like 15 feet thick at the bottom, and tapers down to about 2 to 3 feet thick at the top. If they built it today with steel rebar and grout they could build it with 18 to 24 inch thick walls from top to bottom.. and it won't be as strong as the original but it will be 'strong enough'😉

Mike, that pitching tool of yours reminds me of a time I removed a brick and mortar wall with a 3 pound rock hammer, and a chisel with a mushroom head like yours. One strike of the thousands needed broke off a piece of metal that was like a bullet, putting a deep cut and bruising right through heavy leather gloves. Pull out that grinder wheel, and fix that mushroomed chisel before it shoots a hot piece of tool grade steel at you or others.

You have to practice a lot. Don't be timid or afraid to make a mistake. If the stone doesn't shape right keep working it or take another one. Buy a lot more stone than you think you will need for a job. If you are working a special stone to fit a repair, that is more difficult. Have a real heavy board or table to work on often helps. Like Mike said, fresh quarried stone works best. Hope that helps. JIM

@@MikeHaduck I think it is an allegory of stones referred by Peter in This portion of Scripture :1 Pe 2:1-9 2 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People 4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame." 7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone," 8 and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; So, we are stones too, of His choosing, a royal edifice for habitation of the Spirit, and to reflect His praises. The quarry is the refining of dressing like you do in your own place of removing defects of that which will not serve in the purpose you build it for.

Too bad no demonstrations exist showing copper tools cutting/shaping granite (except by abrasion), Or stone tools that don't take weeks for inches...or leave the kind of tool marks that we actually see. Where are the tools, the flint tools you say were used? What you show is accurate...it just does not show how some of the ancient work was achieved.

@@MikeHaduck Don't you know that you can't prove a negative? it is a law of logic that a rational mind can NOT disregard. Failing an attempt disproves the claim...with EVIDENCE. There is no evidence for things that do not exist, like shaping granite in the ways we have seen, with the tools claimed. No proof? Then it can take its place alongside the space alien theories. Some are still pressing for convincing answers (from people who are no longer asking those questions?) Show us in granite, with the tools claimed...and a process that does not take "7 months of full-time work" to make a crude imitation. That would shut the naysayers up for good.
