I find it hilarious that neither Richie nor Jim wants to take responsibility for Randy being denied entry but clearly someone did it cause he wouldn't have quit otherwise! It all worked out for the best cause there would've been no Eagles that included Randy, and that would be a tragedy!!

@dashlamb9318

It's called lying. Money fortune and fame gives the "winner" the privilege to lie. It is like politics, religion, what ever. It is obvious bullshit - we know it, they know it. Messina looks like Hobit from the shire hiding a "precious", and Furay looks like a lying preacher. Very funny. They shit on their own legacy, and for what? To be RIGHT?

Cant help but wonder how much success Poco would have had if they kept Randy on for a couple of albums at least. He added a golden touch to every band he was in - like Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band and the Eagles. Even his old band in Nebraska was a hot ticket locally.

Mixing is a very difficult thing, and it really helps to have fresh ears for feedback that haven't been listening to the tracks over and over. I totally understand the policy of just Jimmy and Richie at first, then get the rest of the band to chime in. Plus, given the mood Richie was in after that tedious process strikes me as totally understandable.

Looking back 50 years is a tuff deal;. For me, looking back 50 years there are many things I would do differently today. I was pretty tuff with bandmates back then probably said and done things that were bizarre, but that was 50 years ago. Both Richie and Jimmy were on a mission, locked in to an early mix session , to try to explain or blame them for behavior for something that took place 50 years ago in the moment is ridiculous. I can tell you this, even in my small studio today, when I am sitting listening to a session which I think is completed , staying focused is very difficult. The last thing I want or need is someone stopping by saying, oh you need to fix that guitar part. A few years back a friend recorded maybe 8 songs, I gave him a very ruff mix with all of the final tracks so he could listen to his vocals as we still had time to make a couple of changes to the vocals. A week later he called me and told me his friends said the mix was horrible and I needed to fix this and that. The guitars were too loud, not loud enough, blah blah blah. One of his friends actually told him to take the tracks to another person who knew what they were doing. MIXING is not a social time for listening and making comments. Thats what PRODUCERS do, they are CLOSED sessions. IF a Producer hears something that needs a fix, they will bring in the appropriate person to fix it. This is a really lame discussion and complaint. Final MIXING is not a group activity.

Bwaaahaaa, Messina and Furay both blame the other one for doing it. Typical. The feeling is Furay's the main culprit. But then again, Messina looks like he could give two shits. Little did Randy Meisner know that he'd have to soon deal with the Ego of Glenn Frey. That's equal to Messina & Furay combined.

As a lifelong Poco fan/nut, I can honestly say none of this stuff matters to me. It would have been interesting to see what a Poco with Randy would have been like, but after the Legacy reunion LP, I think we can get a little glimpse and it was great! Heck, even a Poco that had kept Jimmy may have been very different. On the flip side, a Poco without Tim would be hard to imagine, too. He made some great Poco songs.

Sure Furay is okay with not being at the initial mix because he doesn't want to be there. If for some reason he wanted to be there, he'd be furious if he was denied access until it was "balanced" by somebody else. So I feel Furay is being disingenuous. It's obvious that Furay and Messina did feel the other band members really mattered as THEY were the leaders. That's fine, but I understand why a talent like Meisner would walk away rather than be treated that way.
@benmeltzer

IMO Richie is right. A late friend of mine was a record producer and he would not let the artist in the room until he and the engineer were finished mixing. If anything, Richie should have been excluded as well. According to my late friend, you just can't do a proper mix with the artist (or anyone) looking over your shoulder. If the artist had feedback after he finished the initial mix, he was all ears and open to hearing what the artist had to say. But not during the process.

@sandy Winfield • it had a lot to do with the amount of drugs they were doing at that time the record companies decided that they needed to call all the shots for the bands as well as to what songs should and shouldn't be on the records I guess because record executives know what we the fans and record buying public want to hear. Record companies broke up a lot of great bands.

As nice as Randy Meisner seemed and all I feel he quit too hastily. He had to audition for founding members Jim Messina & Richie Furay. He didn’t have a lot of experience, still had further ‘apprenticeship’ w The Stone Canyon band before the Eagles. He was VERY lucky to have been chosen by the proven Messina & Furay. They had A LOT of responsibility & pressure of forming the band ie: management, writing, producing etc. We see him as the Take it to the Limit guy etc which was years later w a lot of help from Glenn Frey and Don Henley. If it was me, I would have kept my mouth shut, counted my blessings and let Jim and Richie make that first record.

Furay and Messina made split second decisions without considering their implications. Sure, if it was Furay's band he could have let the the zodiac killer in. Messina was doing his job but made an all too encompassing order. Furay didn't assert himself, afterall it was "my band". Bad choice, deisrespectful in the extreme but it all came out good. Still, Furay owes Randy an apology, if he hasn't made it yet. That's karma for you.
