@@TheCarCrush the "problem" with this whole era of cars, built at Crewe until Arnage/Silver Seraph, is the company was engineering lead, so engineers came up with all kinds of unconventional ways of doing things. I can highly recommend the book "Inside the Rolls Royce & Bentley Styling Dept. 1971-2001 by Graham Hull - it's by far the best book I have on the marques. And a very entertaining read.
@TheCarCrush Жыл бұрын
I have that book too, it's a good one. "Rolls Royce Camargue: Crewe Saviour" is also a fave, if you like that sort of thing (meaning the Camargue). The electrics are all Lucas and over the years, between installation of a modern radio and a long-ago kill switch and other mods, the already tricky system is now a real mess. There's the old joke, "Why do the English drink war, beer? Because they have Lucas refrigerators!"

@@TheCarCrush 👍as a crazy Rolls anecdote, My grandfather was a very keen Rolls enthusiast. He bought a Silver Cloud III new in 1963, and in '65 he took my grandmother on a trip to the USA for their 25 anniversary - they took the Rolls with them, on the QE liner, off loaded in New York, drove all the way to Florida and back, then back to the UK. Crazy days - probably wouldn't be allowed to take a modern car on that trip now. I have some photos of the trip.

Great video. I've a 58 Silver Cloud & an 89 Bentley Turbo RL, on either side of the Shadow. Always special occasion cars & after 47 years of ownership I can honestly say very reliable other than one " fail to proceed " that was caused by my negligence.
@TheCarCrush Жыл бұрын
Hi Terry, Joe here. You've had the Cloud since '79? Incredible! If you care to share the "failure to proceed" story I'd love to hear it. Glad you like the video!
@terrymurphy2637 Жыл бұрын
@@TheCarCrush Hi Joe. I've had " a proper motor car" since 1976 , a 54 Bentley R Type that I flew to my home town London to buy & bought the Cloud in 1984 when I was 37. The "fail to proceed" was an original 27 year old brake hose collapsed & the front brakes applied themselves 150 miles from home in Calgary. We bled the front brake system & I drove back home using the handbrake only & I had a sore left hand to save a big towing bill. I replaced all the brake hoses right after that adventure. You & Marcus should try to find a Turbo R to drive like Jay Leno & I have. It solves all the handling & power issues of a Shadow. Now that's a real proper motor car :). Happy motoring.

Citroën brakes ? We are talking about Citroën spheres suspensions. And not entirely by the way, just fot the self leverage. At the rear only. (Only a few RR had this on 4 wheels at the very beginning.)
@TheCarCrush Жыл бұрын
Yes, we're talking spheres, which were manufactured by Rolls with tech licensed from Citroen. If I understand it correctly, while the rear only is self leveling - the earliest Shadows had self leveling at the front also, which was then disconnected as it was troublesome - the rear still benefits from hydraulic damping together with the springs?
@vikos78 Жыл бұрын
@@TheCarCrush Yes, exactly. This was the idea. A little bit of complexity from Citroën, but not too much.
@TheCarCrush Жыл бұрын
Lol because these cars aren’t complicated enough for their time already! But the suspension is sublimely insulating and when in proper working order, the brakes are excellent.

@@vikos78Incredible when you consider that your Spur is underpinned by the same basic chassis and propelled by the same basic engine as my ‘67! I drove a Continental R recently - also with the same basic underpinnings with gradual improvements over the 30+ intervening years - and was amazed to feel echoes to my Shadow, except of course for the Conti having scads more power and its not being quite so bothered about going around bends! Recommend to update the steering with the rack & pinion steering introduced in the Mk2. It dramatically transformed the steering from being like steering a boat barge to a proper road car.
@TheCarCrush6 ай бұрын
It's a huge job, no? I would love to do it though.
@gregt86385 ай бұрын
Trouble with the rack and pinion steering on the newer ones is that they almost always fail! Sometimes with very little warning ! I never had trouble with the old recirculating ball units on the earlier Rolls'. I thought they drove nice too. If you're wanting Mercedes or BMW type handling..buy one of them.

as the owner of 3 silver shadows i love mine they are a 67, a 69, and a 70, i just bought a 66 James Young 2 door shadow coupe, the Corniche just don't do it for me as it looks great from the door's forward but the rear of the car looks like an inflated MG and a proper Rolls will be right hand drive with metal, not plastic covered bumpers
@TheCarCrush2 жыл бұрын
You're in deep! I hadn't thought of them as inflated MG's but I suppose the rear lamps are fairly similar lol. I think a chrome bumper Corniche coupe would be a great way to go.

@@earnierosenow9834 The high production numbers for the standard-steel saloons doesn't help, and that keeps values for low-volume cars like your JY (just 39 cars I think?) and the MPW's and Corniche low, too. All these old cars, Rolls or otherwise, are expensive and have their Achilles Heels!
@earnierosenow98342 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarCrush agreed, i chose mine very selectively all had to be R/H drive with the Chippendale full wood dash, the addiction started with a Facebook marketplace ad for a 69 all black long wheelbase with the center divider and vinyl top it festered into a love of these things, the JY was one i dreamed of finding and i finally got the unicorn lol, my wife lets me dabble in these as her car is a 56 Silver Cloud MK1, im happy with all of them, and in your vid the brakes/hydraulic system can create some very colorful metaphors while figuring them out, but im an aircraft mechanic so this kind of stuff does not scare me, taking it to a proper body shop does lol
