I first heard this choir in Oxford when I was 16 it sent shivers down my spine and went on to be a lay clerk at bristol cathedral - such an inspiration!!!

The one carol that I like to hear small children sing, it's such a lovely child's sentiment and sounds right sung by little voices. That being said, New college choir is my favourite, been to Evensong a few times and it's the highlight of any Oxford trip.

I remember singing this in assembly when I was in Junior school to 1973. We never sang it again at Secondary school. So like you, I associate it with young kids singing it.

Good old Edward ! I mean of course the Director of Music of New College Oxford. This arrangement and incredible harmonisation just sent shivers down my spine. It's interesting here how a a carol like this can sound so different when sung by this famous Choir.

I am a music graduate and a bit of a Czech specialist, and I can tell you that this 'Czech' carol is unknown in the Czech lands. My wife, who is Czech, and musical, as most Czechs are, never heard it before coming to Scotland and hearing the Malcolm Sargeant arrangement.

You are right insofar that this carol is rather less well known in our country, but it most centrainly is a Czech folk carol. the original (a recording from 1985) can be heard for example here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGG7dXWVd7yCZ6s

I have to admit I find this carol itself a bit sentimental but I like the arrangement. (Obviously in total disagreement with 'goatsareus' which goes to show how personal is musical taste!). Incidentally this link was sent me by a professional musician (he directs an adult choir).

Golly - I really find this arrangement annoying syrupy - I think it's just horrible. There are far better arrangements out there that don't make you want to projectile-vomit!! No offence!
