Getting those self tapping screws to start into wood can be difficult, so a carpenter friend sets them into the wood with a hammer, then the threads can pull the screws in right away.

Not that it matters now, But for future reference they make screws specifically for attaching wood to metal. They are still self tapping screws, but they have an extra little flap on them for drilling the wood out. They worked pretty good the 1 time I used them.
