Rockmelons - New Groove (1987)

This was filmed in the Redfern area, and at McDonaldtown station over 2 days during a hot 1987/8 summer. Comedian Mickey Robbins is dancing holding a baby! Wendy Mathews (long hair) sang b.vocals on the album, and also a feature track of Aretha Franklin’s Jump (sadly no video). I am on keyboards, wearing a Rockmelons T-Shirt. This track was top ten nationally and No. 1 in Sydney. Early versions of this were in the live set for several years.

Vince, I cannot express how much you folk are a part of my happiness timeline. Constantly going back to the albums and music videos, wishing there was more and more. My favourite night was at Moby’s Whale Beach one evening - I think we ended up back in Avalon at Paul Christie’s “PCs” joint upstairs in the Barefoot Boulevard. @@isy54 Mary Azzopardi, who was on the album with Wendy, and toured with us during 1988. Her sister, Rita, replaced Wendy during the tour.

How come you never hear this on the radio, not even when they do excellent 80s, lost classics theme days?..

@@thrusta100 We were never the industry darlings, and didn't fit the OzRock stereotype. I think we were a better and more radical band LIVE than on record. Dance music in Australia was never totally embraced, and we fell just outside the usual classic 80's tracks that are recycled endlessly. Still, it was fun.

I have this on record. I have 2 copies actually haha! Bought em about 15 years ago. Glad I did. Absolute tune!! Video clip is so good too. Makes me happy. The song has always been stuck in my brain.

Newtown & Macdonaldtown, the station is Macdonaldtown station. The footbridge that they were dancing on was at the Sydney (city) end of the station, it doesn't exist anymore as it was a railway employee's only footbridge that stretched from the Redfern Carriage Works (north side of the station) to Mac'town Station and over to Acdep where the country trains were serviced and cleaned. I can't remember if there was a set of steps into the old Mac'town carriage sidings?
