Don't put too much stake in the tests; they're just estimates of what your ancestry might be based on comparing a small number of segments of your DNA with the same segments from everyone else. My sister and I have slightly different percentages for our ethnicity regions, and the results change every once in a while, so you might see very small percent regions disappear or new ones appear. They're pretty good estimates, but definitely imperfect. (fyi some parts of France are included in the England & Northwestern Europe region. if you go to the site on a desktop computer, they show more clear & detailed information)

My ex did genetic testing for work and did mine for free and I found out my parents kept the secret that I had a surrogate mom who used her egg. I grew up thinking I was fully Indian and an only child and then found out I was only 1/2 indian and 1/4 nigerian and 1/4 spanish. I got the courage to ask my parents and I ended up meeting my birth mom and step siblings 2 years ago at 25!

My mom took one a couple years back since she's adopted, and her father (my grandpa) refuses to this day to disclose where she came from. Turns out she's 1/4 Native American, and is likely Hopi. However the Hopi tribe is a bit secretive and doesn't like outsiders, so when my mother attempted to reach out to her relatives (by finding a blood-related cousin on Ancestry) she got a response for about a month and then was promptly ghosted once they realized who she was. Wild.

What it did was confirm something I suspected that was completely thought was wrong but my father’s side kept saying was true and embracing. They kept claiming Irish but his/my last name is rooted in English/welsh based on linguistic etymology. I already knew I was 1/4 Scottish and 1/4 Greek from my mother, but never once saw Irish traits in myself. Both my brother and I took the ancestry test. He did it first and I asked if England and Wales showed up instead of Ireland, and I was right. Same for mine as well. It was at least nice that I got validated.

@Zodia1953 жыл бұрын
I have two amazing brothers and one of them (as an early bday gift) got me one of those DNA tests- 23andMe since he knows I've wanted to take one of those tests for awhile and I love anything family history related. My brother and sister-in-law took the same test so my brother and I got to compare our results and the regions were pretty much the same but the percentages did differ. Like before taking this test I knew that my brother and I had English, German, French, Irish with a little Scandinavian in there. French, Irish, and Scandinavian coming from my dad's side, and English and German coming from my mother's. Well all of those regions were in there, but here's where it gets interesting. I am mostly English/Irish and my brother is mostly German/French. The reason why I find that so interesting is because I look more like my dad and my mother's sister. My dad takes after his mother more, who's Irish and my aunt takes more after the Dunks (my English ancestors). My mom has told me I look mostly like the Dunks though, even though I have blonde hair. My brother takes more after the Hilbigs (one part of my German background). Trust me Sakura, I was extremely nervous too so I don't blame you for being nervous.

Telling someone’s ethnicity/heritage is far from an exact science! And DNA companies compare your sample against really skewed known populations... most of their data points are White European, and comparatively few represent POC!! So at the end of the day, you could really be anything! Also, the way heredity works, you are not genetically related to every single one of your ancestors, because there isn’t enough room in your genome to represent all of them. That, combined with the fact that you inherit a randomized half of each parent’s DNA (meaning that you are likely more closely genetically related to one grandparent than the other on each side, means that it’s possible to have certain ancestry absent from your result. So don’t take your results as the true t
@TanteiGH3 жыл бұрын
You are right that they don’t represent POC very well, but my 23andme results have considerably improved over the years, so I do think at least it’s getting more accurate.

Lol, genes cant be stronger on dads or moms side, You have a split. But some of your dads ( moms ) genes could be stronger than his ( her ) other genes if they are more than one genetic heritage. I think its really brave of Rock to do this, it's pretty scary to think you may have been celebrating a heritage that you don't genetically belong to your entire life, but in the end that doesn't matter, if you truly identify with a certain heritage and have reasonable reason to do so and hold high respect for it, thats all that matters, so even if you cant claim that heritage anymore you can still love it and celebrate it just the same as you always did. And now you have more heritages you can explore and fall in love with too!
