Good Morning DON- David Allan Coe was the first to sing this song then George Jones did it in 1980. And Chris Stapleton was the third to record the song Tennessee Whiskey. My favorite version of the song would always be The King George Jones. He was able in my opinion to put a true life common man identifiably to the song like no other

I think the biggest difference between Jones and Stapleton versions is that Stapleton's is focus on his vocals and range, Jones puts all his emotion into the lyrics including the silky tone is the "smooth as Tennessee whiskey." I'm partial to the George Jones version because as I've said before it's always about the lyrics and story for me.

Oh how I love listening to George now. I'm throwing myself under the bus here, but years ago when I wasn't "listening" to country music, only hearing it in the background when Dave played it, I had the opportunity to pick up some free concert tickets as they usually do for military, and I declined, somehow the name wasn't impressive to me. When I told Dave, he asked who was it, I said "George Jones", well, let's just say I'll never live that day down and just call me the girl from Ray Scott's "My kind of music"! 🤣

My mom adored George Jones and wheneverI was able to I took her. When George sang the hair stood up on your neck and arms. So much emotion and if anything he could convey pain as he lived most everything he sang. As for your question it was written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove . Release by David Allan Coe it reached #77 on the charts in 1981, George Jones released it in 1982 and it went to number 2 then Chris Stapleton released it in 2015 and sold more than a million copies. Some may not know it was offered to George Straight by the composers but he turned them down. For me George’s version is the best. As always thanks Don!

George's version has been around a lot longer, but I was really enjoying Chris Stapleton's take on this. Then you played this oldie again, and I loved it. We saw George in NJ many years ago, took a couple of friends with us. When he sang "White Lightening," he always gave a little shiver. My friend asked me if he was all right. That night George sang " He Stopped Loving Her Today" 3 times. (I think he was all right.) Don't let a good song go to waste.

You asked who was first to sing this song. Well, George Jones had it out years before Chris Stapleton, and he is generally considered the first. But actually, David Allan Coe had it out first. If you search youtube, you can find George and David singing it together at Live at Farm Aid 1985.

"Tennessee Whiskey" was written in 1981 by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. The pair decided to write a song together after meeting each other at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. He had an idea for it for some time and they went back to Hargrove's house to write the song at 4 o'clock in the morning. [2] After completion, the song was first offered to George Strait but he turned it down. [3] It was first recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name Tennessee Whiskey released in 1981. His version is recorded a traditional country style. Commercially, it peaked at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.[4] @ Wikipedia

george wasn't great on a stage, I mean he had crippling stage fright and you can see it in his eyes and he'd drink to combat that, heck there's one song he does with his wife and he's so drunk is like spitting on her and it's driving her crazy, everyone would offer him drinks and it become hard to turn them down, he'd eat raw potatoes just to soak up the alcohol, his wife would hide all his car keys and he'd drive a riding mower to the store for booze, conway was fantastic on stage but george jones live..well he really tries but his nerves get to him and he even gets lost at times when he sings, so his studio stuff is where you'll really appreciate his voice best, and his voice just rips out heart strings like no other
