100% agree. I’m on my second wire Fox Terrier and these guys are the best. He will actually climb mountains with you while at the same time arguing with you over toys. That is the way of this terrier my friend. She will be very loyal and loving. But also very feisty. You need to show her you are the boss. Or she will make herself the boss. I don't know why this came up for me, but I'm glad it did. Rocko is the kind of pup I've considered since my little frenchie, Boo boo, has gone to wait for me in heaven. Boo hiked, had adventures, caught mice and iguana and generally broke all the frenchie rules. We have a huge cane Corso puppy, and a 90+ lbs American bulldog. Rocko looks up to playing with the big dogs, and lap napping too. It's never cold here in the islands, but that's no excuse for not piling on the bed. Thank you.

Ward of advice watch for hawks that could swoop down and grab the baby and she'd be gone before u could stop it from happening. Or coyotes could grab her i love seeing Rocco and the smile on your face in your videos so please be mindful thanks for all your videos

Right on Rocko's safety. Oh, she is so adorable! My sister took my son's chihuahua for us (I could only have my dog-his sister- where I moved to) and she lived out in the country and would let him run :'( Sure enough, he got attacked by something and was in the VET ER for a few days. There are special vests with spikes on them for small dogs to wear to prevent wild animal attacks on them. And, always use a harness please on her, as you sure don't want to ever have to pull her up to safety by her neck.

Forest, I enjoy your videos for many reasons. This one because of: 1. Good tips on cooking in a Van, 2. Very nice drone footage of mountains with nice music, 3. inspiring adventure hiking, 4. The Pup. I did not know you had a puppy with you, until seeing this video (I missed her introduction in an earlier video, which I have now watched). The puppy (Rocco) adds so much cuteness to your videos. She is adorable. And it is very clear that you like her company and are caring for her in a nice way. The seconds of video showing her playing, running, tugging on the broom, laying on your back or lap, or watching you work is really heart-warming. Her antics really made me smile while watching. Adorable pup! It also makes me appreciate how much a puppy/dog can add to a single person's life and day. She looks like an ideal companion for you and you made a great choice. I was also amused (liked) to see her following you on the trail a bit, then in your pack for the climb up the mountain. WOW! I hope you both enjoy your time together and continue in good health.

Definitely true! Just thought of an interesting idea though, wonder if they have dog jackets that could tear away (like safety gear with velcro) if pulled too hard? Could possibly save small dogs if a bird of prey attempts to scoop it up, only to rip the coat off. Could at least buy some time

Hello. Congrats on your sweet pup. She's beautiful. I would like to offer a kind suggestion. As someone who has over 20 years of owning JRT's ( Our current 4 y.o. Male is a JRT/ Shiba Inu mix), I would suggest that you start training little Rocko not to chase your broom, beg for food, etc now. It's cute when they're a pup, but whatever behaviors you allow now you will be dealing with still in 10 years or working hard to undo. We learned over time that the earlier you train for behaviors you want, (as well as discourage behaviors you will not appreciate in the future), the better it is for you and the pup. Enjoy your new family member!

I had a dog just like yours, but they told me it’s a “Brazilian terrier” loved her so much, I got her I was 12, she died a few weeks before I marry my wife when I was 23… I’m pretty sure I gave her the best life she could have had! She is such a cute puppy, and I definitely think it's time to start some "leave it" training. it's cute when she's a pup but once she's fully grown it won't be so cute her attacking the broom, animal poop, random other things on the ground etc. How my family did it with our dog was to use a treat, set it in front of the dog and tell him to leave it with our hand covering it, soon as he looked away from the treat that's when he got the treat in our other hand, basically it's training the dog to ignore whatever is interesting to them and getting a reward that's not what was interesting to him (because generally whatever we're telling the dog to leave alone is something we wouldn't want the dog eating or focusing on) gradually we could tell him to leave a treat on the ground completely uncovered and he wouldn't touch it. The key is to start the training young. Eventually we could just be out somewhere, he'd see something interesting, we'd say "leave it" and the most he would do is sniff it then walk away. Just a thought. 😊

I agree that "leave it" is one of the most important things a dog should learn when they're young, as well as having good recall. There are different ways to train it, but positive reinforcement is still the most important part whether treats are involved or not. :) Jack Russells are so smart! I think with talking to her constantly and using consistent commands like "leave it," "no chew," "Rocko come," "stay," and "quiet," she'll pick things up soooo quickly as long as there's a really enthusiastic "good girl" attached to the end each and every time she gets it right. And yeah, sometimes a treat too. Lol. I love how attached to you she already is! Freakin cute.

I may be wrong but she could get sick from eating animal poop. I know for sure leptospirosis is caused by drinking contaminated water or licking area where there is urine from an animal with the bacteria. Love ❤️ Rocko!

Rocko is such a cutie! Please don't drive with Rocko on your lap; if you are in an accident, Rocko could easily get loose and get lost...and if the air bag is deployed, she will be crushed. The safest way to travel is in a secured crate.

Such a cute pup. I worry about the van interior temps going up as you head into summer. You might have to engineer something to address that or just start wearing Rocko in a papoose when you go into stores.

I live in my SUV a number of months a year for business travel. The temps are hard in the summer as you can’t leave a dog alone at all… and it can still be quite warm during the day. I find I have to go to the gym before sunrise (workout abs or shower) and grocery too off 15 mins for the late night stores close. I use a soft crate for my corgi and basically just bring it outside under the awning a lot during the day which she will often do.

You are right about being worried that she might chase after a bear or other wild animal, JRT are fearless! And as she gets older she will be very protective of you. I showed my little JRT your video because she heard Rocko bark and recognized the sound of her people 🐶she wanted to know why I never let her eat deer poo and cow pies! Silliness aside, I've always enjoyed your videos with the drone footage and the hikes but now even more with Rocko. ❤️

Rocko is adorable! My mother has had about six or seven JRT. They have so much energy and are fantastic companions. She lives in a deeply rural area with a lot of snakes. Her JRTs would LOVE to fight the snakes. It was kind of a problem. One found a snake under the house and the battle went on for a day, then quiet for another day, and eventually the JRT came out with some bite marks and dragging the snake with her. I don't know why JRTs seem to tolerate snake bites so well. My Groenendael got bit by a rattlesnake on the nose and needed three doses of antivenin before the swelling started going down. I don't if it's possible with JRT, but "snake aversion" training for dogs is common in California.

She is an absolute riot. The way she attacks your broom is hilarious. You mentioned in an earlier vid you were worried about coyotes and wolves with Rocko. I'd be more worried about birds. Hawks and eagles could fly in out of nowhere and scoop her up. There is a nice bungee lease setup for running with a dog. Its a harness for her and a low sling for you with your dog running out in front or close by your side that might work will for your application. Nate

So she is clearly a good trail dog. Does not run off like some other dogs on the trails. I hear stories of certain kinds of dogs who run ahead, come across a bear, run back to their human, meanwhile the bear is in tow. The dog just needs to run faster than you to escape the bear, I suppose.
