Wow! Really nice job. A lot of great things to say: subtle filmmaking and really nicely composed sequences. Some of Ciaran's finest work to date I think. Nice use of longer takes to tell the story and well choreographed movement (opening shot, party scene...). Some of the best performances I've seen in any of your films and you successfully made me forget that I know the three leads in person, you all definitely became the characters. Big props to you and the entire team Bertie, this was top notch.

Ciaran O'brien deserves an oscar, the photography is amazing !! We can recognize Bertie's universe in the topic but the "end of the world" theme give it a new perspective it's new and really unexpected , I like it. I watched this film an hour ago and I loved it but I couldn't quite figure out its full meaning. Then just now I realized that the scenes with the harsh red light and sweating brothers were set as the sun was about to hit the earth and they were spending their last days on earth together. Its brilliant that you can love this film on first glance but as time goes on more and more things starts to click into place and you realize it has way more meaning and intricacies than you previously thought. Great job.
@BertieGilbert19 жыл бұрын
yeah, we wanted the viewer to be able to figure this stuff out but didn't want it handed on a plate to them. also I believe if the world were going to end and you know that for certain, you wouldn't want to say it out loud. It's like when someone's dying, you'd rarely want to explicitly say that because it'd make it more real. That's what we had in mind regarding not simply stating that the world was ending :-)

The instant I finished watching it I had the urge to go back and pick apart every scene of this. Honestly, it was that intriguing. Incredible job establishing the relationship between these brothers in such a short amount of time. There is so much unsaid and yet I feel there's a lot of symbolism in here that isn't initially apparent. I liked the vagueness of the setting; I'm sure it has many more interpretations than just the literal apocalypse/expansion of the sun. And the ending - oh my goodness, the ending, the desperation settling into weary defeat and sort of unbelieving amusement at the situation - everything is ending and the characters can do nothing but cling to each other in their last hour. Even though they're so far apart mentally, I like the fact that they're physically touching throughout the last scene. There's so much more I could say about this but only after I watch it a thousand more times. I particularly like the blue light around 18:06 - I feel like that's symbolic (or maybe it's just pretty). Like all the red is the negativity built up inside Sidney and the resentment towards Joe and the little bit of blue is the goodness in him, the part that wants to reconnect to his brother, the part that feels lost and disconnected and unbelievably young/naive. Or maybe it's just a pretty light.
@jioaNFOIsdanhoif9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, he seems very careful about his lighting choices so it would make sense. Plus it's so out of nowhere, there isn't really blue light in the rest of the film. So it must mean something.
@LilMissBlondie899 жыл бұрын
I think the blue light is actually supposed to be the projector as they were watching back old family videos, but the blue does nicely contrast the present state with the idea of happier times in the past

Brilliant work. The argument scene was my favourite - the acting, the power dynamics captured by the staging/cinematography, the intensifying drone of the sun, the jittery synthesizers when Sid leaves, and then the sudden mood contrast with the moving in scene. Worked a treat.
@BertieGilbert19 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much dude! Yeah, throughout the film we focused a lot on the staging of scenes to highlight power dynamics. In the past, Joe is very much the dominant presence. He looms over Sid when he gets him off the ground after being sick. But by the present, Sid is usually standing looking down on Joe. But yeah, in that scene Joe gradually raises himself until he's completely stood, looming over Sid again. They reach a sort of equilibrium at the end, when they're both tired and on one level. Love playing with that stuff

So what do people think the rocks symbolize? My first thought was simply that the rocks are supposed to symbolize Sid and joe. That when the rocks were broken open, you can see the guts inside. So when Sid and joe are facing inevitable death (broken open) they pretty much started sharing their thoughts and feelings (the guts inside). Because both brothers were very closed off from the beginning, like Sid was surprised that joe was getting engaged, because he had no idea they were so serious. They had a barrier between them and that would be the rocks outer layering, the hard surface that makes it difficult to see inside. I don't know if this is right, but it makes sense to me?
@snowynya22297 жыл бұрын
Yo I know this is like, 2 years too late, but I think (and Bertie might have said this somewhere too) that you're right and the rocks do symbolise Sid and Joe, 'cause it's also a play on the phrase "Like getting blood from a stone", which you know, means something very difficult, and so like, Sid and Joe start off kinda closed up to each other but do eventually open up, like these rocks that you can actually get blood and guts from, so yeah, summit like that I think
@carlarosi81046 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm two years late as well and I don't know if I'm correct and I definitely agree with your theories, but my first thought was that the rocks represent them in a slightly different way, not that they're closed off but that they seem so solid and strong to each other *because* they don't know much about each other and they both envy the other, especially Sid envies Joe and then Joe cracks open and reveals that he'd been bleeding all the time. So like, they're not as solid and strong as they seem, they're rocks that bleed.

@RobinHouseChannel4 жыл бұрын
Almost 5 years late lmao. But yeah from just a title perspective I've always viewed it as kind of symbolic of how Syd and Joe dance around what they really want to talk about. Throughout the whole film, they almost never say what's actually going on in their lives, to the point of barely even acknowledging the actual apocalypse happening around them. When Joe brings up the "rocks that bleed," it's kind of just small talk to distract from the darkness of their situation. Naming the film after that little distraction is super indicative of Syd and Joe's relationship imo.

I first watched this film yesterday and I really enjoyed it but didn’t really understand the full meaning behind it. Afterwards when I was laying in bed at night, it kind of haunted me. The film started to make more sense and the scenes became clearer. Then I realised that there were flashbacks, but that the sun was about to hit the earth and that the two sweating brothers were spending their last days on earth together. After I realised this I watched the film again and it made me feel very emotional, maybe because I could see my brother and myself in the characters, I don’t know. But I think it’s brilliant that you can love this film on first glance but as time goes on more things start to make sense and it becomes a lot more meaningful than at first glance. I don’t really know anything about films, let alone short films, but I’m an enthousiast and I really enjoyed this one. Thank you for making this, Bertie. Great job. All the love.

It's a privilege to watch Bertie, Sammy, Jack, Ciaran, et al. continue to grow as filmmakers and storytellers. So much to praise here in the performances, staging, and design of this film. I love the way light and color is used to advance the story. Masterful work by Ciaran. Bertie and Jack create a solid, believable relationship. To my taste, however, a little too much information is withheld from the viewer. I'm not asking that it all be dumped out on the table. I like the intrigue of being drawn into a situation that isn't entirely obvious all the way through, but in this case, I think I'd have been lost without some help from the comments here. I've watched this film three times and it isn't done with me yet. It's a feast of riches.

still one of my favourite short films of all time. I remember the realisation that "here comes the sun" wasn't just a childhood song they were listening to, it was because..you know. I remember the realisation of what was happening, and watching everything over again and how perfectly done everything was done. so incredible and really well made.

This was brilliantly done and I'm sure loads of others will talk about the production as a whole but I just wanted to focus in on Jack Howard here who was absolutely fucking brilliant in this. He was so natural, likeable and comfortable throughout the piece. He has an amazing presence on screen and you almost forget you're watching an actor play a character. That's the highest praise I think I can give an actor. He was incredible and he definitely has a promising screen career ahead of him. I hope someone at the BBC or C4 are watching this as he has the makings of a world class TV actor.

I don't know what it is about bertie Gilbert films, but they consistently make me feel something. Whether it's happiness to the point of laughter, sadness to the point of crying, or this strange philosophical feeling that makes me contemplate life itself, I feel it. And good or bad I find it so much better than what I feel naturally from day to day. Bertie so perfectly expresses thoughts and ideas that are so unique and I love it. Never stop making these lovely films, and stay happy.

Usually I find it astoundingly hard to sit through short films on KZbin, due to perhaps the soundtrack being off, or the storyline not being interesting enough, etc, which sounds horrible I know, I mean, most KZbinr filmmakers are amateurs, but for some reason I can barely ever sit through them, but this... it's so riveting, like something I would expect to see on TV. The lighting contrast between the past and present are spot on, the acting was phenomenal, the whole thing was edited fantastically, had I have had the chance to be a part of this, I would have jumped, because it was by far the best short film on KZbin I've seen.

I watched this when it came out and cried for who knows how long afterwards. It left me feeling so much and gave me so much to think about. The subtlety in the shots and the colour and transition and parallels just moved me so intensely. Seven months later, I'm still thinking about it and the feeling it gave me deep in my bones, and I just watched it for the second time and cried a whole lot again. One of my all time favourite short films, not only by you Bertie, but by anyone. I really, really love this film, and you should be proud to have made something so brilliant. And bloody hell Jack Howard, one of, if not your best performances to date. So. Much. Love. For the both of you. x

dont know if anyone's said this but like ive always loved how bertie's film titles have like deeper meanings or is something to get at, and like for this one, it's like, yeah of course joe mentions the "rocks" that bleed in the film, but like i feel like both joe and sid here are also the rocks that bleed in that they seem to act like nothing is wrong (irony being the repeated "fine"s) but they do bleed, like joe's outburst and sid's final attempt to bond and also like how the red lighting suits it they're both bleeding because of lost time and how they've never actually reconciled with each other but was never able to kind of express that and slowly they became rocks for show with masks but in the end they bleed because they love each other and the frustration of miscommuication and lack of communication hurts and just GAH love it

I cried at the end...i love so much that every film has a secret message or a hidden situation or even something kind of unreal. You are so fucking good as actor and director, Bertie. I just hope to see your works played in a cinema someday.

I love Bertie's films.. There's always an air of obscurity and you don't quite know how to feel until the very last moments, when suddenly you understand everything, and you might just cry out of shock. The lighting is always gorgeous, the original soundtrack, such realistic dialogue, it's all beautiful..

binge watching all of Bertie's films at nearly 4 a.m. this talent and creativity is unbelievable. I truly hope Bertie becomes big and famous one day. this is the fourth film of his I've watched tonight, and I simply cannot decide which one is my favorite.

Your best one yet, Mr Gilbert. The subtle allusions to apocalypse are brilliantly measured and the increasing heat gives the whole thing a crossing-the-desert desperation culminating in yours and Mr Howard's finest performances to date in the final scene. Some minor wobbles aside, this is streets ahead of its predecessors. DONE DONE AND ONTO THE NEXT ONE Can I suggest a spin-off about Gary single-handedly fighting off the sun?

By far one of my favorite parts must be when he says "It's just been-" "a long time" "a year and a half" and then they show him as a child "....right", as if its been so much longer for him, it's been such a longer time since he felt happy. Or at least that's how I interpreted it, and I really loved it

Excellent once again, I'd probably say my favourite, I just enjoyed it so much. Can't say I fully understood it, but if a day ever comes in which I do fully understand one of your films I know I'll have gone wrong somewhere. I do know I'll be spending the next week trying to figure it out though. At the moment I'm on 'sun crashes into earth and destroys the world' so I'll probably give it more thought. Jack's acting was superb especially and the flashbacks were great and funny and thoughtful, this was just too good. Keep doing what you do, I love it :)
