Not gonna lie, I saw Ned Luke in a diabetes medication commercial, and all I saw was Michael recommending medication. But I guess that's what happens with popular titles, especially by Rockstar. It's like the actors who played memorable characters on really popular TV shows and movies. The cast of Seinfeld will forever be seen as their characters on that show (Jason Alexander even made fun of this on Curb Your Enthusiasm). And I remember Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office) was on CNN once, and while they were on the air. one of the anchors for another show or something was surprised to see him and said "Hey! It's that guy from The Office" and Wilson sounded pretty annoyed at him and said "I have a name, you know!" To the general public, he is forever Dwight.

I will say hollick did deserve royalties along with other actors and motion capture actors. I will also say $100,000 for a no name actor is pretty impressive. I think if he would've chilled out he could've had more opportunities through interviews with youtube blowing up, stream with twitch blowing up, and probably a minor role in GTA V or other future GTA titles. Which would've made his money back 10 fold including royalties and loyalty. He shot himself in the foot and alot of actors do this because they don't look at everything in front of them and analyze it properly. Now of course we also didn't have the knowledge we have now so who's to know that being patient would've worked back then.

Idk how he negotiated a contract to get 100k. But GTA was already an established entity in the videogame space by the time of GTA 4. Everyone knew it was going to sell as well as it did. There's no reason for anyone to get paid that kind of money with no other incentives on such a major title. Yea he may have shot himself in the foot. But again... Should have never been put in that position in the first place.
@ronald38369 ай бұрын
Hollick could have asked for royalties when negotiating his contract, and apparently he did, but at that time Rockstar could easily have picked some other no-name actor willing to work for less. Hollick was not in much of a position to negotiate, still received decent pay, gained a lot of name recognition (but IMDB suggests it did not really help him), and could probably have returned for more work if he had kept his demands in check. Btw, his voice acting was great, but the creative work was not his but Rockstar's.

With the game gaining the popularity that it did so fast he probably felt that his children would more likley be exposed to it than his other mature works. I was 12 years old when GTA III dropped and trust and believe I managed to play the whole game through ...AND I DIDN'T EVEN OWN A PS2!!! I played it on my sisters boyfriends ps2. Lol. Game makers of Bioshock and Flower, Flow, and Journey all joined together to express video games as works of art and there was an internet feud between them and film critics like Roger Ebert that said games couldn't ever be art like film was.

Now that I've watched _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,_ the whole situation with some GTA actors complaining about being underpaid or not given enough credit reminded me of Adriana Caselotti. Her only starring role was Snow White and she was paid $970 for her stint. I mean sure, back then that was no small expense, and while she didn't have any misgivings towards Walt Disney and embraced the role she was famous for, she did lament about not getting much in the way of residuals and royalties for her performance, especially when the 1937 film was released for the first time on home video. I'm sure the latter part does sound familiar once you know about what I mentioned with Coolie Ranx and a few other actors. Not to mention that Disney withholding Caselotti's character's voice for their exclusive use also eerily reminded me of what I've been told by Jason Zumwalt when I asked if he could record a birthday greeting in character as Roman.

Both the Devs and VAs are valid. It's always a case by case basis. If a game has minimal work, then yes the devs deserve more credit. But with games like GTA or Persona or Mass Effect, the voice actors help make you more invested in characters. And they make you wanna come back for next time if it ever happens. They matter just as much as the Devs who work hard on the games as well. It's a dicey situation, but dismissing one group isn't good in my mind.

Then they can demand more money next time Rockstar wants to hire them. The Friends actors received only little for the first season because the production company could have hired anyone. While I do think voice actors are the ones that bring the character to life. The programmers and coders are still the back bone of videogames and I believe deserve the most attention and pay. I think you have it all backwards. Just because you're a game dev, doesn't mean that you're entitled to the best acting talent for your silly game. Let alone, have the right to pay voice actors peanuts, just because "they're not the programmers." As a game dev, you also have a responsibility as to how to manage the vision of your game. After all, as a dev, you wrote the d@mn storyline and character arcs for your effing game. So, as a dev, if you don't want to deal with the headaches of big name $$$ actors, then don't hire big name $$$ actors or base your characters off their acting style. Or even better, have your game's character dialogue, entirely text based, if you don't want to deal with any actors, at all. Because these people are actors, that's their craft, and it's all they know, and they don't know sh#t about videogame development, and they don't have to. Acting is their job, not sitting behind a desk coding and getting yelled at by an incompetent project manager. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but respect the value of other people's craft. Because, if you plan to add voice actors to your game, then you're by default entering territory that you are not an expert in. How? You are trying to add an aspect to your game that you have no clue how it works. In this case, trying to implement something that required from the realm of acting. A realm that any programmer will have close to zero clue how it works. Again, if you don't want to pay $5 million for an acting role, then don't base your characters off a $5 million actor. This is already true in the movie industry. Why should it be any different in the videogame world when it comes to voice acting? Don't go about saying that actors need to be played less when it comes to video games, simply because it's the devs that are the backbone of the code and not the actors. Voice acting is a supplement to a videogame, not a requirement. A game can be fully functional without any voice acting. And at the end of the day, the backbone of the soul of the character is the actor, not the programmer. You can't code acting. Lastly, unless you already plan to make a trash game, then yeah, it will be easy to find anyone to do the voice acting and motion capture. Trash takes no effort to make. But if you plan to make a good game with a good story, then good voice and motion actors will quite hard to find if you don't have the $$$. No good actor works for peanuts on the dollar, kid.

@A J But they do make or break a good story which is a pretty big deal when it comes to games like GTA. If they weren't important they could just hire any random and end up with voice acting in a game like Shenmue. Their names may not be the draw but their voices are and that deserves more than the pittance Rockstar/Take-Two pays them

While he did the most work of any voice actor, he did less work than every programmer on the team, of which there's about 150... that's 450 million dollars for a game that did 600 million, which would only leave 150 million to pay the other 850 people that worked on the game AND be the investment return so the investors would be willing to throw that kind of money at the next game too. The game made 600 million over the course of 5 years meaning that your strategy of paying employees 3 million for putting in "so much work" be non profitable for the first couple of years there. So no, we can't pay the voice actor that barely works for 1 year of the 3 years of development time that much money and expect the rest of the thousand people working on the game to not lose a lot of morale.

Hopefully now, actors will realize that recording thousands of lines for a AAA game, apparently only counts as "good exposure", and after a long and arduous process, developers will realize that the people who work for them as outside contractors, still count as f*cking human beings. Any of these actors could have taken some advertisement job, or bit part in a sitcom(or twenty) during the time it took them to go to work and rehearse and record every line 3-4 times, and instead they did charity to a multimillion dollar corporation. I'm not saying R*ckstar should get f*cked and its HQ burned to the ground, but there's a special place in hell for companies that hire an entire retinue of lawyers, just to find every single loophole in order to not have to do anything more than the absolute legal minimum. I'd bet the combined retail price of every single PC GTA game that they spend more on the legal team in a quarter than they do on voice actors and other assorted freelancers during the entire production cycle of any of their major releases.

Why did the same voice actors sign the contract they did and agree to the terms if they could “just do a sitcom”?
@LP-ct9nk3 жыл бұрын
Because corporations are notorious for using loopholes and understating the amount of work needed for a project. Some voice actors still fall into the trap of “oh mayor it‘ll be good exposure” and then get screwed later on. OP’s original point is all facts tho and rockstar knows it hence why they do damage control

I think you should also talk about the voice acting in GTA 4. Juliette Lewis hosted Radio Broker and didnt seem to complain about working with Rockstar Games, Karl Lagerfeld designed some clothes for GTA 4 and even got his own radio station (K109). He said that he loved video games and after his death Rockstar Games released a RIP post in Instagram... Yes there are some diva voice actors who think they’re the best but some of them are nice (Gilles Peterson is also lovable and loved working with GTA)

17:04 GTA 6 rumors and Shawn Fonteno are why We kept seeing ruomors of CJ returning and Shawn never actively dismissed them (since him and Maylay are cousins) and that set him off. That is exactly how i feel, well known actors gets boring after a certain period of time, because you know them and their voices well enough and the certain kind of performance they are doing. Less known/ new actors, that are doing a good performance are always very welcome. Side Note: the only voice actors i really love for every documetories in german (i am german) are Hans Mittermüller (may his soul rest in peace, sadly he died last year) and Joachim Kerzel, who were the voice of a lot of documataries, that i watched in the past and have a deep, really calming voice, that i really love to pay attention to, as they explaining the world. Documentaries are the only exception i make, to hear the same voice actors over and over again, when the voice is really good.
