Velvet Revolver
The supergroup Velvet Revolver was underwhelming to a lot of people. While music fans loved Guns N’ Roses and Stone Temple pilots, the combination of ⅗ of Guns N’ Roses with one parts of Stone Temple Pilots would result in a volatile group that turned their guns internally while other musicians also took swipes at the group. In today’s video. Let’s talk bout the musicians who didn’t get along with Velvet Revolver.
Hoobastank
In the early 2000’s the band hoobastank had back to back platinum albums and they had one of the most played songs of 2004 with title track of their third album The Reason. As part of the tour to promote the album The Reason, Hobastank would open some shows for Velvet Revolver. It was following that tour the band began writing their follow up record Every Man For Himself. One of the songs “If I were You’ garnered alot of press coverage with the lyrics being partially inspired by teh velvet revolver tour.
Hoobastank frontman Doug Robb would tell MTV News
"We were on the Velvet Revolver tour, and some of the shows were amazing, but some of them were terrible," "The audience was filled with guys who love Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots and think everyone else should go to hell. People would turn their backs to us the whole time and keep their middle fingers in the air.
As for the Velvet Revolver members he’d add - you see all these guys who have so much and don't appreciate it," he said. "They seem to have forgotten where they came from. Actually, let me rephrase that: Four of those guys were the coolest ever, one of them is just in his own world. And I'll leave it at that." Apparently Weiland didn’t say hello to the band for the first three weeks of the tour.
Guitarist Dan Estrin would tell the Appetite for Distortion podcast in 2019 that following scott weiland’s death he didn’t change his outlook on the tour. He would add that scott weiland wasn’t very nice and accommodating. He would echo Robb’s comments that Slash and therest of the guys treated them so well.
Axl Rose
During Velvet Revolver’s short time together from 2003-2008, the topic of Guns N’ Roses always came up in interviews. It also didn’t help that GN’R frontman Axl Rose was working away with his new lineup of the band and was trying to get Chinese Demoracy out and he was also touring with the band. Slash, Duff and Axl were also involved in a nasty lawsuit over rights to the band’s old songs.
In March of 2006 Rose would release a statement claiming Slash made an unannounced visit to his house to try to have a truce and end the lawsuit. The statement would read. "Slash came to inform Axl that: 'Duff was spineless,' '[Velvet Revolver frontman] Scott [Weiland] was a fraud,' that he 'hates [Revolver drummer] Matt Sorum' and that in this ongoing war, contest or whatever anyone wants to call it that Slash has waged against Axl for the better part of 20 years, that Axl has proven himself 'the stronger.' "
Slash would claim for a bit he never made a visit shortly after the statement cmae out, but in his 2007 autobiography, Slash would confirm that he did visit Axl’s house, but he didn’t speak to Axl but rather left a note for his assistant.
Then in 2009 Axl gave an interview to Spinner where he was asked about his former guitarist’s playing ability to which Rose responded
I prefer listening to others in general, especially those who both push their talents and infuse them with a level of energy that I've seldom heard in his efforts over the years. I'm not taking anything away from the man that are his to claim for his past efforts; it's just that for whatever reason for me, whether the approach, style or basic hands-on technique is there, the passion and true dedication to the art of guitar in his chosen area other than being, in my opinion, a whore for the limelight has
