Thanks for refreshing a childhood memory of the inside of the Washington Monument. During a family visit to D.C. in the mid-1950's, we kids convinced my dad to climb the steps with us -- both up and down! It was a wonderful adventure to examine the many special stones lining the inter walls of the monument. From the top I took a snapshot of the Jefferson Memorial with my "brownie" camera that took a prize in my hometown summer photo contest. Coming down was the hardest: rough on the knees. Needless to say we all had hearty appetites for lunch that day. What a pity the stairway had to be closed to protect the stones from vandalism!

I am 70 now but back in about 1970 I was part of a group of high school students who got to go inside and climb up the stairs ( the ones who didn't mind heights ). My Mother and sister came to visit and we took them on a tour of Washington. When we got to the Washington Monument, we had to sit on the benches outside to wait for the elevator. This was in 1973. When it was our turn to go on the elevator, my Mother suddenly exclaimed, "Goodness sakes! I didn't know we were going to go up to the TOP!!"

Wow! That brought back memories from a June 1969 trip east from Washington state to attend the National Student Council Meeting in Perry Hall, a suburb of Baltimore. About 25 of us representing the state also got to fly fro Baltimore to Dulles where we boarded busses and were dropped off on a Friday afternoon outside the Smithsonian Institution and told we had 3 hours to visit the museum. Rich Tiedeman, from Marysville, WA, and I decided we would rather go up in the Washington Monument as we were uncertain if we might ever have the opportunity again. The line was posted at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours and looked like the end was around 3 1/2 hour wait. We realized we could use the stairs as there was no line at the door to the stairs and the base of the monument and climbed all 998 steps (if my memory is correct?) to the top and were able to snap photos from the top on my Kodak Instamatic camera. We didn't realize that we could take the elevator down and descended all 998 steps as well. We missed the bus to the hotel, but Rich knew the address and guided us back. We were grounded for the night by the chaperones for missing the bus, but we both agreed we would do it again in a heart beat! I had forgotten about the carving along the steps. Thanks from a 70 year old for refreshing my memory! GJBrownDO 7/2/2023 21:32 Pacific
