Love it! Thanks for the up close detailed look. On my 27" monitor, it was like I had the radio at my station and got to play with it myself. 😊

Hi! Very Interesting Video indeed! I have a special interest in Military Radios that can be used by Ham Operators. This interest mainly stems from the Very High Quality of Design., Components, and Workmanship that go into Military Electronics in General. I myself am presently obtaining a Rockwell Colling PRC-515/ RU20 Manpack Transceiver that covers 2- 30MHZ. It will require a bit of study on my part to operate and maintain, and this is all part of the Fun associated in Ham Radio. Also, my interest lies in the CW aspect of the Hobby as well. You have a wonderfull set up that I am sure will provide YEARS of Good Functioning!

Amazing! Did you source the components from an aircraft salvage company? I thought all commercial aircraft of a certain size had HF radios but I guess that's not necessarily the case...

How do you have access to all these cool Military radios. I am envious.

The secret is not so much where to get them, the secret is how much you are willing to pay for it, unfortunately....

How did you figure out how to pin the connectors to run it on a bench?
@LifeIsTooShortForQRP4 жыл бұрын
It is in the Collins installation manual, you can find it on the web

Nice setup! Can you share the schematic of the microphone audio interface? What is the (Collins?) partnumber for 600-150 Ohm xfmr?
@LifeIsTooShortForQRP3 жыл бұрын
Jan, the diagram is actually in the Collins 718U-5M installation manual. It can be found on the web, but if you send me a personal KZbin message with your own email address in it I can email it to you. I did this particular microphone setup for 2 reasons: 1) the 990C mounting that I use here did not have the connection for the biased microphone present (i.e. carbon microphone), only the 600 ohm/100mV line. And 2) I wanted to be able to use the radio with the military handset which has a regular dynamic (non-biased ) microphone element. If your particular 990C mounting has the carbon (i.e. biased) microphone wiring in place, there are easier ways to get this to work without the need for the (expensive) 600/150 ohm xformer. BTW, the xformer is not a Collins part, I bought it on eBay once, no idea who manufactured it. Cheers.

Nice and i used that model in many aircraft, how did you get 400 cps and what are using for a power supply , keep up ghe good work, matt

Hello! It does not need 400Hz, it runs of single 28V DC. Cheers.

Later versions of the 747 had a HF notch antenna mounted in the dorsal fin. See here: www.asbavionics.com/downloads/747%20HF%20Shunt%20Flyer%2010-07-2013.pdf Earlier versions had a trailing wire that would be automatically unreeled once at cruising altitude. So the whole would basically behave as a giant center-fed dipole, with the plane being one half of the dipole, and the wire the other half. Needless to say such an huge antenna (and at 30 thousand feet elevation!) would work like gangbusters. The coupler that you see here would match this "flying dipole" (or the earlier mentioned notch antenna) to resonance

Would love to have one of those but seems large and heavy for a Cessna 182. And what to do about an antenna?
@Patriot-bn9om2 жыл бұрын
I believe just a piece of wire, as long as possible from the rooftop above the cockpit to the top of the vertical stabilizer. The antenna tuner can likely tune a 10 ft wire across the entire HF band.
