Pro-tip: For electrical boxes, keep a box handy and you can do the cutout with only 1 measurement... Then, assuming the box is adjacent to a stud, all you need is the measurement from the bottom of the box to the floor. Take that measurement to your insulation, drop the bottom of your spare box on that measurement and cut around the box. Boom! I've even seen installers keep wooden blocks cut to common box sizes (i.e. templates) as part of their kit.

Hey, Matt! For the DiY audience; you can save a lot of material (and thus money) by cutting the batts short ways when you get to odd stud bay lengths. It's a marginal labor increase for self-installation, but makes a huge difference when it comes to re-using your leftovers because they'll always be a standard stud bay width.

Doing some renovation in the basement. Rockwood is awesome. Super easy to use and safe. I love how it is easily shaped, for wires and smaller areas. I would recommend this over fiberglass insulation any day. Especially if you have kids. The fire proofing, sound dampening, and water repellent are amazing benefits. Thumbs up for this product. Try it once, and you be thankful.

In my experience rockwool is a superior product to handle and install vs. fiberglass blanket. Its semi-solid composition is really a joy to work with. The bread knife is a good tool and Ive found a 10 point hand saw very accommodating as well. Instead of all this tedious measuring I simply snug the batt into one side of the opening and if a reduction in width is needed just run your tool blade along the opposite stud face tipping the tool out towards the opposing stud to give a snug fit. A square rip cut would not allow for a good snug fit. Same goes for obstacles within the bay; lay the batt in place and slice and snip around the items. A Much quicker technique.

I find the Rockwool easier to cut due to its stiffer form than fiberglass insulation. Allows for more precise cutting to allow for slipping behind outlet boxes and slicing for wires. I will never use fiberglass again.

We have been made aware of many products, tools, techniques, and lots of helpful info because of your videos. We are currently building a 3,400 square foot high performance home for a neighbor of ours in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are aiming to have an ACH50 of 1-1.5. We are using many Uberwood products. I just redid my entire attic in rockwool. So much better than the fiberglass that was in there. When there was a wire, junction box, etc. I found it easier to just cut the batt in pieces to fit around the wires etc. It all fit up snug and will make servicing easier in the future. Granted this was in a confined space and retrofitted instead of new construction.

The BEST tool I used for my house was an electric carving knife. (It has two blades that cut back and forth.) (You can even sharpen them when they dull, and cuts fast and straight in short time.)

That insulation is so much easier to work with! I just used it the first time a week or so ago but for cutting I found it easier to squish it with a level and cut with an xacto blade instead of a bread knife. Also maybe i was wrong but the electrical box i cut out I ripped in half (maybe) so I would be able to put it behind the electrical box

Great video. Timely for me. My plan is to Rockwool my garage walls. I live just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota. I had the attic done by a pro a few years back as the garage heater (forced air gas 11ft high ceiling mounted) was causing ice dams over the farthest third stall… the previous owner only insulated part of the attic for some reason. I fixed that… Here is my question. The home was built in 1997. It is a well built home by a good builder. Cedar lap siding. Do I need to figure out a vapor barrier. I will be covering the walls with 3/4” finished plywood when complete. Weather up here is crazy - we have hit -25F and 103F in the same year.

Standard rule of thumb is that interior vapor barriers should be used in cold climates. Warm interior and very cold exterior is a recipe for too much moisture within the wall moving from warm to cold. Think about a cold glass sweating on a hot day. You don’t want that happening in the wall.

I had several questions for the install of Huber Zip-R12 sheathing and Huber's tech people answered my questions within 24 hrs. One was - should I add a permeable vapor barrier on the inside when using Zip-R and Rockwool. They said no due to the Zip-R not being vapor permeable. If I wasn't using Zip, I would need a vapor barrier in the inside as the walls would dry to the outside.

Absolutely. Any bit helps protect you from the heat or cold outside, and sound transfer. Perhaps it wasn't mentioned since I believe Risinger builds (that he shows in his videos) he typically spray foams around electrical outlets or hard places like that OR he does 2" of closed cell foam, then the remainder 3" space of insulation (rockwool) to get the best of both worlds. The strength and air tightness from the foam and the cheaper but fire resistance, water resistance, and sound deadening you get from the rockwool.

No staples friction holds the bats expand I did my crawl space years ago and every piece is still there but I had to replace the fiberglass insulation because it was falling down the paper backing gets damp and the staples pull through the paper they don't hold over time.

I think they make a wider version for 24" OC bays. Otherwise you could strap the bays with long straps of 1x material perpendicular to the rafters and slip multiple pieces in behind. Or put some more rafters in to make 16" OC or smaller bays.

Cut your bats the other way they are four foot by whatever width you choose. The amount you need stays the same just a little more work on the install.

I bought a 12x24 Graceland shed/building turning it into a wood working shop and want to finish the inside with insulation & sheetrock. I've already started buying fire, mold/mildew resistant sheetrock and would like to use Rockwool insulation for fire and water resistance as well but the building didn't come with an exterior vapor barrier. DO I NEED A VAPOR BARRIER and if so how should I put one on??? Oh by the may I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast so you know the humidity I'm dealing with.. Thanks for any input.

That was a great video. However I noticed that when you put the insulation up on the ceiling, you left all the water pipes up on the ceiling exposed to the exterior of the roof. Depending on what part of the country you're in, wouldn't those pipes be subjected to freezing since they are above the insulation and not below the insulation? I was telling my wife that I've always had this idea about running the flexible piping for water in the house and then wrapping the pipes with some kind of insulating bubble wrap wherever they are exposed to any of the outer part of building structure such as in the case of that video. We've had the cold flexible water line freeze in the wall to our master bath in the past even though the water lines run inside the wall.

I think there is a conditioned space above the studio not an attic space, so it shouldn't freeze. Take a look at the opening scene again and you'll see a second floor. Chase mentions that they want to kill the sound as much as possible so that's why the insulation going into the ceiling even though there is conditioned space above it.

Does anyone know if you push the Rockwool all the way tight against the sheathing or are you supposed to leave an air pocket between the insulation and the sheathing?

It will fill the entire cavity, front to back.If the surface facing you is below the stud surface, you can work it a little with the knife to pull it back out flush. Also, you can push in the middle of the batt and it will cause the edges to com back out toward you. The batts are sized for standard lumber depth. Not like the old fiberglass that would give you 2" or 3" batts.

If you can figure out a good insulation plan for an old school brick walled home 3-4 layers with plaster interior I'd loose my mind. I've considered a rain screen interior because the brick needs to breath (I've heard) with a floor flange and weep holes Then insulation before the new drywall goes up but I'm no pro.

I just did a check on products and while I didn't see a Rockwool curtain like the fiberglass RR Buildings has used (video was 3 years old), I did find a similar product from a competitor of theirs in mineral wool insulation. Johns Manville has a few options that are better suited for post frame structures and using similar techniques to RR Buildings. I would expect that being sponsored by Rockwool makes it difficult for Matt to mention their name... he might have some experience dealing with them that I'm not aware of. I just know Johns Manville is the one with a plant 30 minutes from my house and they sell similar products.

@@barjona100 Blown in could be helpful "up top", but not in the 8' OC bays on the walls. The rigid board product might be applicable, but sourcing and cost might be a challenge.

@@jimbecker5675 Why wouldn't it work with the larger bays? You would need to put your drywall/interior sheathing first but then you should be able to blow in the insulation. Typically for post frame, I have seen large rolls of fiberglass that are 4 foot wide, so you would need 2 rolls for each bay. You could use Rockwool and lay the batts on their side, so two batts laid end to end and repeat the process up the bay.

That floor joist insulation installation is very questionable to me. RESNET would consider that an uninsulated floor. The insulation must be in contact with the floor above. Grade 1 installation would require complete filling of the cavity from floor to ceiling below.

I know you are in Austin Tx but I was concerned to see what appeared to be PEX piping above the Rockwool ceiling insulation. I know PEX pipe handles freezing well but the joints, which I thought I saw, don't do so well freezing. You guys had a recently had really extraordinary multi-day zero degree freezing event. That would be a disaster if there was a big ceiling leak. I've seen large ceilings collapse from a small water leak. Is Chase going to put insulate the piping in the attic crawl space or have a drain-down system?

Depends what part of the country, and if its a garage section that wont be heated, then you don't need it.

Rockwool has a shelf life of 6 months in the bag, they say you can get it wet, and yes you can but what they don’t tell you is that you can NOT get it wet when its in the bag, i have 200 plus bags of Rockwool that is literally garbage It will not come back to shape when you open the bag, the bats are all around 1.5” thick or less and if you squeeze it to hard it won’t come back to its shape, Rockwool refuses to do anything
