Been looking for a video just like this. I am a 71 yr old woman who will be attempting to duplicate these processes, all by herself. This is the only video, of the dozen I have watched, that addresses EVERYTHING that needs to be done, WHY it should be done that way, and teaches in an informed but easy to understand way. Thank you for the video. Our living room and kitchen were converted to cathedral ceiling over a decade ago, now the drywall compound and compound tape are pealing offmf the cathedral ceiling, im almost sure the conteactor didn't intall these ventitalion baffles, does anyone know if a "special" drywall , coumpound, coumpound tape is needed to prevent compound and tape from cracking and allow "some ventalation" through the drywall? , Or the lack of ventilation is the cause of the drywall compound cracking?

Thanks for the video, you showed me how to properly install the rafter vent’s. I’ve been working on ventilation problems in my attic. Whoever the builder was for this community. They blocked the soffits with installation. I have a nest thermostat with sensors throughout the house and including the attic. I kept wandering why the temperatures would reach 130 to 140 on a very hot day. So I install a attic fan that took the place of my original original solar fan that I installed on top of my roof which did not last long so I went with the a quiet cool fan and installed it on the inside of the attic. I thought the quiet cool fan would make a big difference, but I finally realize that the fan was only circulating the hot air in the attic and not really reducing the temperatures. After viewing a video on attic ventilation and effects of soffits blocked , would not provide the proper ventilation needed for the attic. So I decided to check the soffits in my attic and found out that they were blocked by installation. After pulling back, the installation, I immediately noticed cool air passing over my head. I will be working on unblocking the rest of the soffits and installing the rafter vents before putting new installation back in place. The part of your video that really helped me was the part on how to install the raptor vent’s properly.

Good info. There are several closed channels on my roof in the attic due to the design (about 6-8 in a row of 20 rafters) and there is no way to vent. Open cell foam uses no ventilation, but no one has been able to actually explain why that product won't cause heat damage to the roof or if there is a water leak, foam inhibits the ability to locate it. In your view will approx 30% of the roof not being ventilated be a problem?

Couple issues to an otherwise great video. Those paper flaps should overlap and staple to the bottom of the rafter joists not the sides in this application for the vapor barrier. This compounded the compressing of the insulation. You cant compress batt insulation and retain the rated R value it has to stay at the thickness specified to retain air. R38 batt typically needs 12-14" depending on type. Looks like you compressed it to around R-18-20. Get the correct height insulation to fit the rafter bays without being compressed and save your money as well.

One suggestion for everyone. Tape every joint after you add the baffles. It is a lot of work but block all the air leakage from the baffles so the cold or hot air is not penetrating deep into insulation. Especially in windy cold days. The reason for vented attic insulation to be as high as R-60 is because it is in direct contact with ambient air. Seal the baffles. Pay your kids to do it 😅

Amazing video! I think of leaving out top one foot of my ceiling on either side (the triangle area). My vent is on that top triangle area as well and if I cover all the way up, I don’t think the vent will work well. Then I plan to cover that top triangle with a drywall (I’m covering all the ceiling with drywalls after the insulation). What do you think? Would that be bad for the cold winter?

Great video. The only thing I am confused on or possibly I missed it how much of a gap to leave between the ventilation at the top of the roof and the insulation? I’m assuming there needs to be room there for air to circulate.

Thank you for the content. This video was very helpful. I have never worked with insulation or dry wall or anything like that. We have had HVAC companies here to tell is we needed a new unit, which we bought. We also had one to tell us the duct work needs to needs to be re-done. No one told me that insulating the attic ceiling would is what we needed to do. I'm not able to hire a contractor for this job but I desperately have to do something. We have an issue trying to control the temperature on our second floor. Warmer than the rest of the house in summer and cooler than th rest of the house in winter. I believe our energy bill is literally through the roof because of the insulation or lack there of. In your opinion do you think I should try to do it myself? Please advise.
