Spider Rico was the first guy Rocky fights in the series. Remember the fighter Rocky fought in the club to start off the first Rocky film? That's the guy (and same actor) who fought him. Marie was shown as a child and she was walked home by Rocky in the original film when he tried to keep her out of trouble. And he explained to her how they won't remember her, but remember the "rep." You should go back just to watch that scene and the start where Rocky is fighting Spider to make the connections in this film.

Hey you two~ I can't tell you how stoked I am that you two actually GET This movie, (and others that offer more than the cliche shallow stories and explosions, etcetera). Films like Rocky Balboa (and, yes, even the first one, even though it won Best Picture) are so often underrated and under- appreciated for all they offer. And on that note, consider how few people really see Stallone for the genius that he can be. I mean, forget about the fact that he was 60 for this movie. . . the writing that he does, and direction. . .SO clever, SO seemingly natural and yet~~~ Applause here. Anyway, thanks again for another great review! I actually requested this one from you two just two days ago, so what a lovely surprise! Keep up the good work. Adrian would be proud ;^)

Stallone in general, doesn't get enough credit for his mind. The fact that he wrote and directed this movie, plus the other ones he wrote and directed. He puts a lot of heart and good messages in his stories. I think a lot of society assumes he's dumb because of how Rocky acts and talks.

Rocky and Rambo are two of the greatest characters from the last 50 years. World level, not only Hollywood. Any writter would've dreamed of creating one of them. Stallone wrote the two scripts before his 35th birthday. I mean...the guy is a great writter. The snobs "hate" him probably because they secretly love Rocky, but they can't confess it in front of their snobs friends.

I think a lot of it has to do with how he got typecast as an action movie star due to the Rambo Sequels as great as his action films were the general consensus of Sly is that that he can`t act (To a average cinema goer that has not seen these films) because they just see action guy but if these people actually took the time to watch movies like the Rocky series or First Blood (That end monologue) Copland hell even Oscar the guy is such a talent and underused one at that. I can`t blame him for doing the action role that he`s famous for as those films where AWESOME! but I do wish some directors would put him in more dramatic stuff because he`s just so talented.

Sylvester Stallone actually contacted Talia Shire and asked her if he could kill off Adrian. He wanted to give the film a serious emotional impact. And he was right to do so. I remember hearing, or reading, somewhere that Talia Shire didn’t want to be in Rocky Balboa, and she was asked to return. I can hear in some of Marie’s lines that they were probably written originally for Adrian. Sorry that I have no source material. The movie is poignant and yet still packs a punch. I was pleasantly surprised by how great this movie was, imo. They handled Adrian’s death with class.

@@TheJediKenneth You know, I keep hearing this online every so often about Talia and "Balboa," and I want to know where it sources back to because it's absolutely untrue. Talia was HEARTBROKEN that Stallone was going to kill Adrian. But then after he went over to her house and personally explained the story, she realized it was the right way to go. After the movie came out, someone asked her in an interview, "How do you feel about not being in the last 'Rocky'?" To which she shot back, "What are you talking about? I'm everywhere in that movie!"

@@ConstantineFurmanyeah they both got in to an agreement that if Adrian was alive in 6, no way in hell would Rocky have the beast in the basement. 20:28 Boxers as they age lose their speed, their agility, and their legs. But what never fades is their punching power-- that remains almost constant. @@clevelandbci9562 That's because he wasn't trying to punch that hard at first. I saw an interview with Foreman a few years ago where they were talking about his strategy going into the Moorer fight. The plan was for Foreman to throw punches at about 75% for the first 8-9 rounds and just absorb whatever Moorer threw at him and let Morrer tire himself out. Starting with the 10th round Foreman started to throw punches with more purpose. It was literally Foreman's version of the Rope-A-Dope and it was a work of art.

Stallone mentioned how there was an earlier draft of the script that included Adrian, however her role was basically reduced down to "don't do that, don't do that," since there's no feasible way she would have approved of him getting back into the ring again Lol He didn't want her to be reduced to that, and after many rewrites, he ultimately made the difficult decision to have her killed off.. The one thing I love about this movie is the sense of melancholy and redemption that hangs over every minute. This is a Rocky beaten down by life but he still somehow manages to squeeze every bit of happiness when he can find it - and it's HARD. I don,t get people dunking on this movie who say this is just nostalgia ride, Adrian dies so Rocky can be sad etc. Rocky Balboa comes back to what made first Rocky great - it is not movie purely about boxing, this is a story of a man who can enjoy simple things in life and while he thinks a lot of his past, he also tries to use the rest of his time in a meaningful way. Meanwhile Paulie just tries to drink away his pain and mistakes, he cannot admit he is not at peace with himself. This movie was a perfect return of beloved character and nobody can convince me i am wrong.

Look how many celebrities (actors and athletes) who have families, and yet embroil themselves in extra-marital affairs, or have their personal lives scrutinized. All-time great athletes like Ali, Jordan, Kobe are revered for their athletic talent and accomplishments, and yet all them also faced some turmoil in their personal lives. Are they tarnished? Hardly. We really never got a sense of Apollo's home-life other than the fact that he had a wife and kids. Yes, He has strong values, as it pertains to being a trainer, athlete & warrior. However, evidently, we also see how brash and led by ego he is. While those are the perfect recipes for an athlete in competition, it does also lend itself to poor decision-making in one's personal life. While it doesn't "excuse" his infidelity, I appreciated "Creed" for addressing it, both on PTI (great cameos haha), and Adonis' own motivation.

14:15 in case you're wondering how rocky passed the health tests when in the previous film he was diagnosed with brain damage here's Stallone's explanation "When Rocky was diagnosed with brain damage, it must be noted that many athletes have a form of brain damage including football players, soccer players, and other individuals in contact sports such as rugby, etc. Rocky never went for a second opinion and yielded to his wife's wishes to stop. So with the advent of new research techniques into brain damage, Rocky was found to be normal among fighters, and he was suffering the results of a severe concussion. This movie was actually inspired by two real life events. The first one, in 1970 there was a computer simulated fight between Muhammad Ali and at the time was in his prime, and Rocky Marciano. It was called the super fight. The second was when George Foreman came out of retirement and ended up winning the heavyweight title.

In case no one has mentioned it: The light being bright and Rocky's reaction was real. He didn't know it was gonna be that bright. Also when the girl tries to get Rocky to buy drinks is also from a real life experience when he was filming First Blood a girl tried to hustle him to buy rounds being fake just to get free drinks and also when Rocky says to Mary " You keep dancing around all these problems maybe you wanna dance wit me" was off the cuff and when he said " where that came from I don't know" was also Stallone reacting to what he just said and they kept it in the film...there are so many more real moments in the film..cant wait till you start Creed

I love this film. So many heartbreaking but beautiful moments. I was going to go on and on but instead just like to focus on the one that hit me the hardest. Rocky keeps a folding chair tucked up in the tree next to Adrian's grave. He loves and misses his wife so much, he visits her so often, and stays for so long that he keeps a folding chair tucked up in a tree. That is so sad yet so beautiful it kills me every time.

I absolutely love the relationship Rocky has with Little Marie in this film. They did a really good job of anchoring this film to the first "Rocky" without outright re-doing it. And, I love the meshing of the modern-style packaging of the boxing elements in this film with the cinematic elements of a good "Rocky" film.

@@TBRSchmitt I agree with 1 being the best. 2 was inevitable because people actually loved the character and wanted to see him WIN the belt. 3 was a pure cash grab and would have been ass had Mr. T not been such a beautiful villain. 4 was another cash grab where the studio was like, "Hey, there's tension with the Soviets. Let's give them some USA! USA! USA! fodder." 5 was supposed to be what this movie was - a way to show that the body falls apart but the warrior spirit can last 'til the end. It fell flat, though, because Tommy Morrison is a terrible actor, the Don King clone was over the top obnoxious and the entire story just didn't make much sense (i.e. Rocky's suddenly deciding this guy he met yesterday is more important than his family - it felt like a betrayal of everything the character was about through the franchise). This movie was a good punctuation for the franchise. My ranking: Best - Rocky Rocky Balboa Rocky 2 Rocky 3 Rocky 4 Rocky 5 (though it's pretty much tied with Rocky 4 as the butthole of the Rocky franchise) The sad thing is that even the two I dislike most are still better than the majority of the trash being put out these days...

Just a minor point that you might not have noticed. The woman who tried to get Rocky to buy a round of drinks and got mad at him and said "You ain't nuthin'" when he advised her "Don't be playin' a fool for that guy" was among the people watching the fight on TV at the bar. Seeing Rocky stand up to and prove himself, she gained respect for him and realized that he was right to tell her that she should have more respect for herself. Rocky is inspiring character because of the way he faces his own challenges and the way he hes always trying to lift up other people as well.

Couple of things. 1) Spider Rico was the nobody that Rocky was fighting in the small fight way back at the beginning of the first film 2) There was quite a large gap between Rocky 5 and Balboa. 16 years (Rocky 5 in 1990 and Balboa in 2006). The actress who played Adrian (Talia Shire) was still alive but she'd retired from acting and it was generally decided her death would be an emotional blow to audience. One she apparently supported

I’m just wildly happy you guys did this movie. Not a lot of people do, and I think it’s because the premise is so crazy. But this was the last movie I saw in the theater with my dad. He passed not too long after it came out. He was a great athlete when he was young, and just this old tough guy Italian kid from Queens, but by that time he was right around the age of the Rocky character, and I remember how he just kept saying how stupid the movie was, but he smiled the entire time watching it, like the idea of getting one more shot to do what you loved was giving him such vicarious joy. Not too long after he died from cancer and it was like watching your super hero die. But I remember i didn’t cry much til weeks after the funeral when this movie came on and I just lost it watching Rocky and Paulie and his son. Honestly, I’m crying now writing this. It may be ridiculous, but I think some of the best stories we tell are, because as long as they hit you the right way, they can be as powerful as any so-called “serious cinema”. Anyway, you guys are great. I love your stuff and I hope you keep doing it for a long time. Thanks for this.

It took 3 years to write the script for part 6. Catching the flavor of the original and just in time for the 30th Anniversary. The fight was the first thing they filmed in Mandalay Bay, to be as real as possible. Rocky's character has endured for so long and still stays humble. The speech to Rocky Jr. is the best dialogue of the film and that will always be remembered. This was the beginning of a whole new resurgence for Stallone as an actor & filmmaker. Afterwards came Rambo IV (2008), The Expendables trilogy (2010-2014), Bullet To The Head and Escape Plan (both in 2013), etc. Not too mention, he raised his physique to unbelievable levels in his late 50s/early 60s. Sly Stallone has truly proven as Lil' Marie said "The last thing to age is the heart". RIP to Tony Burton (Duke Evers Sr.)

True story about when they filmed the fight. The venue was actually a real arena, obviously and there was a fight prior to filming. They informed the crowd already there about the filming of the Rocky movie, and if they wanted to stay and be part of it, no one left. That's why they have the crowd they do, and it's shot in the exact same way an actual boxing match is shot, they didn't even really need to move the cameras. This truly showed what a tremendous actor and storyteller Sylvester Stallone is. So glad you both enjoyed it.

In the DVD extras (possibly commentary) it was explained that the fight was filmed before a real world title fight crowd. The reaction was genuine and there was no 'acting' on the part of the crowd, and post fight the point where Robert & Pauline lead Rocky back out to the crowd was unscripted, as was Sylvester's reaction. A really touching moment showing the affection of the general public to this character.

But back then it was still so cool to see an old hero coming back. We all didnt expect to get that nostalgic, emotional and we all found ourself euphoric by the final fight. A great ending to the series. I was also skeptical when they announced Creed film because I thought it would ruin Rocky but they end up being worthy entry to the franchise.

I adored ROCKY BALBOA and place it in third place behind ROCKY and ROCKY III. And that motivational speech that Rocko gives to Robert is a quote that needs to be put in every classroom in the United States and hung in every home. Two bits of trivia: Before the porch light scene was filmed, one of the on set guys handed Sly a lightbulb and didn't tell him that it was a prop-set light, so when Sly twisted it in and went "WHOA!" and staggered back, that was for real. Also, in the scene where Rocky is offering Marie a job, the both of them were horribly ill with the flu and were so miserable that they did it in one take.

The speech he gives to his son is iconic, and used widely for inspiration, even among people who were never fans of the Rocky films.
