In real life, Mr T is a super nice, intelligent guy. His portrayal of Clubber Lang was so good, that his mother walked out of the movie premiere, then scolded him for disrespecting Adrienne, telling him, that she thought she raised him better than that!

In defense of Mr. T as a villain: The theme of this is clearly Rocky overcoming fear. And what best causes fear is an unstoppable, unreasonable, aggressive force. If Mr. T had been a more 3-dimensional, well rounded character, it would have made him less menacing. So Mr T's performance really is in the best service of the story as a simple character in this case.

@Not Mee - Totally agree. I believe Mr. T's role as Clubber Lang was one of the great villain roles in movies. Mr. T. was not a professional actor - he was a former Army military policeman and bouncer when he became a curiosity on TV in 'Tough Man' competitions. @TBR Schmitt's reactions to the character when watching the movie showed how well he did in his very first acting role. He was a brilliant villain and great performer as a fighter - I, for one, recognize this guy's acting chops.

My favorite character of the series. Also if you think about it he really thought Rocky was ducking him on purpose and taking the easy fights. Finally just like Rocky & Apollo lost his edge. You could tell it was beginning to happen to Mr. T after he won the title. Originally he refused even doing a interview even breaking a camera. Later on he's all calm and talking in front of the camera

Not quite, in my opinion. I think this one still has a lot of drama and very good story progression. Every time I watch this one expecting to be the one that turned around after not having watched it for a while I get surprised by how much of the spirit of the first two still resides in it. And of all the Stallone directed ones, this is the best one. From photography, to editing, to production design... The next one is the one that really went off into pure action movie mode. This one is, somewhat, underrated.

They didn't say it was devoid of the drama and heart of one and two. The series never lost that in any installment. This one gets cartoony in the way it hadn't before.

I love how Apollo was never a true villain. He was just an antogonist to Rocky as a boxer. Overall, he's a solid guy who just hypes up fights and gets prideful (which messed with his matches with Rocky).

To be fair, Apollo was pretty much a villain in Rocky II. He did everything he could to slander Rocky and wound his pride enough to drag him back in the ring. It was calculated on Apollo's part, and completely driven by his own wounded pride at not decisively beating Rocky in the first one. Doesn't make him a bad person, but I think he was decidedly a villain. To borrow a term from professional wrestling (which shares a lot of narrative similarity with the Rocky movies), Apollo was playing the heel. For just that one movie. Then he turned face again when he came in to train Rocky in III.

@@TheLanceUppercut But at least they go to the trouble to explain why he’s calling Rocky out by showing him being hated on and being called a fraud by fans and that beginning to weigh on him. It’s clear to the audience that he genuinely is “playing” the heel, he hasn’t become a bad person. He’s just desperate for another shot to prove to the world that he’s not a phony who carried Rocky in the first fight as a gimmick.

He's just a businessman who gave Rocky the chance to begin with. And only talks trash to hype up the fight for the cameras and media.

“Eye of the Tiger” was recorded specifically for this movie. Stallone initially filmed the opening montage intending to set it to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”, but they were unable to get the licensing to use it in time for the movie’s release, so they went to lesser known artists asking for a song that had a similar beat that they could sub in with the already edited opening scene. And so the eventual choice was Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” (and Survivor will be back later in the series after establishing this relationship with the filmmakers)

The song "You're the Best" performed by Joe Esposito was originally recorded for this film. But Stallone rejected it in favor of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". "You're the Best" was later used in the movie The Karate Kid (1984).

Cool fun fact. Here's another fun fact. The song "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera was also recorded for Rocky IV, but Stallone rejected that one too and instead went with "Hearts on Fire" for the ending credits, as well as for the second training montage.

Stallone picked Mr T after seeing him win a bouncers contest or something similar , he used to work as a bodyguard.... Rocky 3 was Mr Ts debut into acting and he killed it becoming superfamous after this film.

Stallone worked with a lot of Pro Wrestlers in Paradise Alley and he was really impressed with their dedication and professionalism. He really helped open a lot of doors for helping wrestlers make a jump to movies.

I love this one. From him losing to Clubber to Mickey then training with Apollo. The origin of "I pity the fool" legendary. Great final fight, I like that it shows the whole fight instead of the usual and necessary montage.

Rocky III is a very fun movie. I love Apollo's training regiment with Rocky to bring him up to fighting Clubber Lang. :) Fun fact, that segment during the opening where you see Rocky on the Muppet Show was from an actual episode where Sylvester Stallone was the guest star. They simply used the footage from that episode and made it so that it was an episode about Rocky Balboa, even redubbing Kermit to say 'Rocky Balboa.' lol

This was really when Rocky became a staple. I was about 10 at the time and all of us saw it. I used to wear a Rocky pendant to school everyday. It was a kids' movie just as much as for the adults. I also think this was the first time most of us saw Hulk Hogan. Honestly it was like Stallone, Mr. T, and Hogan were superheroes the way we all loved them.

The trash-talking by Rocky was meant to keep Clubber Lang punching, and punching hard, essentially tiring him out and sapping his stamina, if not his strength. It also serves as a psychological edge, and by getting under Clubber Lang's skin Rocky makes the much larger and stronger man fight his fight. Your reaction to Rocky III was awesome! So much fun! It's interesting that this might be your introduction to Mr. T, and him being the villain. After this Mr. T became a pop culture icon of the 1980s appearing on the tv series The A-Team, his own cartoon show and a bit of a short stint with the World Wrestling Federation fighting along side Hulk Hogan. He was always a Hero after playing Clubber Lang.

10:12 Fun Fact: The statue is still in Philly and has since 1980 ever been. They moved it to the (former) Spectrum sports center in Philly at one point - but now, the statue is back at the museum, near the stairs!

I had the honor of waiting on Mr. T. once a long time ago at one of my bartending jobs. Literally one of the nicest and most polite people I've ever met in my life. Great. Thank you guys so much. I feel like, it´s just popular these days, to hate on 4. People don´t realize that Rocky has actually the most development in that one and I could write an essay about why that is. And maybe I will, when we get the reaction. But it makes me very sad to see, that people apparently prefer trying to be "edgy" without even trying to see, how magnificent that film really is, how layered the characters are, how dramatic the plot and the stakes are and not to forget the best montages of the whole franchise. The only crtitcism, I ever heard against 4, that I could get behind and agree with was that it feels too "hollywood-ized": Totally! It´s a spectacle! You definitely have to suspend your disbelief a bit more than with all the others. But isn´t that also, what makes movies great? Escapism? Letting yourself be entertained and emotionally invested on higher levels than super realism? I think, that Rocky 4 finds the PERFECT balance for that! Idk guys, that´s my opinion at least, I fucking love Rocky 4....

Rocky IV now has a Director's Cut. I would watch the original release first and love if you then watch the Director's Cut to see the differences and you could talk about which version you liked better with the different scenes and then which one you liked better overall. Just my opinion.

To answer the Hulk Hogan question, it depends how you define "nearly" 7 feet tall. Hogan was 6'7" at this point in his career, but almost half a foot below 7 feet. Still, he would tower over the 5'9" Stallone.

Also, prior to The Internet, it was common for pro wrestlers to have their height over- or under-stated by several inches, depending on the needs of the storyline. It still happens at times (including in mainstream professional sports, even) but it is harder to get away with.

I don't think anyone really disputes that. That said, yes most of the wrestlers that have been billed as "giants" a typically have their heights overstated by at least a few inches.

Yeah, virtually all the fighters in the Rocky movies get a few inches added to their heights to keep up with 5’9” Stallone playing Rocky, who is explicitly listed as being 6’0” multiple times. So for consistency, whenever another character’s height/weight is given, they’re similarly scaled up

This is my favorite Rocky film from my childhood! The training montage, the bond between Rocky and Apollo. Has obvious flaws but I love this movie, 10/10 Ding Ding 🥊

Each of the first 3 Rocky movies all have a really strong character arc. I love that Rocky has a serious fear of losing what he's gained, and that really got to him. Having Apollo come back was also superb, and the fight at the end; Apollo knew what he was training Rocky to do, outlast Lang. It also keeps that argument of 'who was a better fighter, Apollo or Lang', clearly it was Apollo, who took a hungry Rocky to the the distance twice. Lang, facing a prime Rocky, couldn't go 3. Sadly, the newt two movies are a huge dip in quality. I'd still say watch part 4 because it's incredibly entertaining, but it loses a lot of the real emotional part.

@@peteg475 I completely agree. Each of the first 3 have a real story to tell, and the characters have realistic challenges to overcome. 1 is the underdog story. 2 is redemption. 3 is fighting when you actually have something to lose. The rest are kinda weird heh.

But Rocky was a far superior, more seasoned, better trained, in better shape figher vs Clubber than vs Apollo. Rocky was in horrible shape with only a little over a month to train for the first fight with Apollo.

@@ckobo84 Except for a couple things. 1. Rocky was only better due to Apollo's training. 2. Apollo and Rocky went 15 rounds in each fight. Clubber Lang lasted 3. SMOKING GUN: It's canon that Apollo beat Rocky in their third and final fight, the one we see starting at the end of this movie. In Creed, Rocky admits Apollo beat him. Bottom line, Apollo and Rocky were extremely closely matched, Rocky and Clubber Lang weren't.

Rocky was basically using Alis "rope a dope" strategy, slightly modified. Get Clubber out of his game and get him to constantly try to end it with one punch, over exerting with each attempt. Both rely on keeping the opponent enraged with taunting and show boating (like the trash talk and rubbing/holding his head), though Rocky does literally use his head as well since his whole thing is he can take a lot of punishment.

The rematch is just fantastic. A lot of boxing fans are always on the lookout for the kind of fighter that Rocky becomes at the end of this film. Take a guy that hits like a sledgehammer, and has unbelievable heart. Then add the stamina, agility, footwork, and head movement. Train him so thoroughly that his reactions are on autopilot. The complete package of skills and conditioning.

This is the first film in the series to not have any fight montages. Three fights all shown pretty much in their entirety. Clubber Lang's biggest mistake is that he trained for power and not endurance...Rocky knew it and exploited it. And if you like training montages, wait until the next one.

You can really feel the power of Clubber Lang's last five punches on Rocky's head at the end of the first round of the first fight. You can also feel the pain of Rocky's suffering as well. Stallone acted convincingly in showing Rocky losing.

This is my favorite of all the Rocky movies and it's because of Mr. T.......he did a great job especially for a guy with no acting experience. His career really took off after this movie. He got involved with professional wrestling where he teamed up with Hulk Hogan and he got cast in a hit tv show called The A Team. He had his own cartoon, a cereal named after him, as well as other movie roles. He was truly a star in the 80's.

Mr. T was absolutely perfect in this role as a young and hungry fighter who was understandably pissed because he felt the champion had been ducking and avoiding him I mean this is boxing he's not going to get anywhere saying please and thank you so bringing Adrian into it was a savage move but it worked. Say what you will about Mr. T but he became a household name after this movie. Clubber Lang is the ultimate antagonist just giving my 2 cents.

This was similar to the real-life Rumble in the Jungle between Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman. It's hard to believe, but George Foreman was a bad man back then. He didn't talk as much as Clubber Lang, but he didn't smile either. He was a street thug who became the heavyweight champion of the world but remained the thug (his words). He destroyed people in the ring and is known as one of the hardest-hitting punchers of all time. He was Mike Tyson twenty years before there was a Mike Tyson. Muhammad Ali was a former champion who some believed was past his prime. The question wasn't whether Foreman would win, it was how bad he would hurt Ali in the process. Some believed Foreman could kill Ali. However, Ali had the strategy to wear him out. He did exactly what Rocky did in the last fight. He changed his style of fighting and even taunted Foreman to hit harder. Foreman later said that really got into his head. It was eight rounds of Ali taking punches and wearing Foreman out. In the 8th round, Ali's strategy had worked and Foreman was tired out. He took his shots and Foreman was knocked out for the first time in his career. The world went crazy over the fight. Ali had done what many considered impossible. But that loss is what started the change in George Foreman from the thug who never smiled to the man who can't stop smiling.

I met Mr T when I was a little kid. He was jogging downtown and actually approached me and my family. He said in his Mr T voice, "Hey" we turned around and he was smiling. He gave us all autographs. Nicest guy ever.

Rocky 3 is perhaps my favorite movie of the series because it's a double redemption movie. Rocky gets his hunger back (thank you Adrienne) and Apollo turned Rocky into a full on well rounded boxer, not a cement headed south paw brawler. Gave him good speed, foot work, rapid hands as well as power, and most importantly stamina. Although Clubber landed good blows, Rocky got better at defending his head and evading the wild power hay makers and gassed Clubber out. A nice demo of the importance of maintaining good cardio endurance in an fight.

Rocky - he only wanted to go the distance. He didn’t really think he could win. He was a 30 year old club fighter and enforcer. He felt fortunate to get a shot to fight the Champ. He wanted to go the distance also because no one had taken Creed the distance before. Rocky 2 - defending his honor, responding to the challenge, providing, becoming better, and as Adrian so eloquently stated WIN was the goal Rocky 3 was about overcoming fears, self doubt/self confidence, loss in a few ways, and finding and learning new ways and ultimately to win again.
