Ivan Drago has always been my favorite opponent for Rocky throughout the series. I appreciated his stoicism and 'no nonsense' vibe after Apollo's 'showmanship; and Clubber Lang being a brash loudmouth. I always liked Apollo but I found it sad that he was all about 'putting on a show..' Even all the way back in the first Rocky movie he was the same way, and underestimated Rocky BIG time. Underestimating Ivan Drago and not taking him seriously proved to be a regrettably fatal problem. That and not being able to let go of his hunger for boxing glory and being remembered as the best.

Yeah. I mean you'd think Apollo would have learned after underestimating Rocky not once but TWICE! Maybe spend less time choreographing with James Brown and more in the ring training like a psychopath? See I think Apollo was in love with being the champion. He loved being on top. But he was no fan of doing what it took to get him there. Once he paid his dues the first time, that was it for him. And it cost him once, it cost him twice and third time was the charm.

Lol your intro always makes me laugh. I think you’re lovely and I really enjoy your reactions to the Rocky movies. I’m glad you are watching them. They are my favourite movies. Stallone is awesome. Regarding him boxing. Although he never has competed or boxed professionally. He absolutely has a lot of experience with the system of boxing, he’s done as much training as any professional and he’s also sparred with a few pros during the making of the movies. He is fast and you can tell by his technique he knows how to punch and use his bodyweight. I think he absolutely hits hard judging by watching his body mechanics in the movies. He’s 75 now and looks amazing. Still making action movies and still ripped. He really is Rocky. Eye of the tiger.

I met Dolph Lundgren a few years ago. Lovely guy, crazy smart, and he told me that his silence was a conscious decision to be different from Apollo and Clubber. Sadly, it led to Hollywood thinking he couldn´t speak.
@Kainlarsen2 жыл бұрын
It does seem like Drago says little, but does much. I think he would have wanted to say a lot more, but his wife and the state were speaking for him. The little subtle facial expressions, like he was ordered not to speak, but felt like he disagreed with some stuff, like the steroids, maybe he just went along with it because it was ordered, even though he felt it was unsportsmanlike. Even the way he beat Apollo felt like he was a robot or an attack dog, like he had to make sure he did it in the way his handlers wanted, so he went all-out to make sure he didn't get back up.

There's a reason Drago's wife was with him through all the press conferences acting as his voice. It wasn't that he wouldn't speak or couldn't speak English, because we know he can. He legitimately wasn't allowed to speak for himself. The Communist Party and the Soviet government were his masters. His wife was likely a ranking Communist Party member who was put in that role to help shape the narrative. It all makes sense when he reappears later in the series.

They bring back Ivan Drago in Creed II when Drago coaches his son to fight Apollo's son. Stallone has written all the Rocky and Creed movies. Why Stallone always looks smaller is because he is only 5'9" to 5'10" tall. Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed) is 6'2" and played college football at San Diego St. then 1 year with the Oakland Raiders. Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago) is 6'5" to 6'6" tall. He was very much into the Martial Arts with a 4th degree black belt in Karate. Creed III is scheduled to come out this year on 11-23-2022. Rocky V is, IMO, skippable. But, you definitely should watch Rocky Balboa (the 6th one) before just jumping into Creed. Your analysis of this film is spot-on. The pacing is too quick at times and while the "No Easy Way Out" montage is meant to help process Creed's death and what's led up to this in the franchise, it should have been left more breathing room. Maybe a scene with Mrs. Creed blaming Rocky for Apollo's death, ala Mrs. Kintner in Jaws blaming Chief Brody, would have been appropriate. And more could have been done with Duke, Apollo's trainer, and Rocky outside of that one scene where he describes himself as Apollo's father-figure. Additionally, the ending speech about U.S.-Russian relations, while good, doesn't really flow from the strongest narrative of the film (Rocky avenging Apollo), but instead from the lesser narrative (the Cold War) so it doesn't feel like the real capstone this movie needs. Maybe a scene at the end with Rocky at Apollo's grave would have been appropriate. That said, I still really enjoy this film for the popcorn flick that it is, but there's far less pathos than in the other installments.

I’ve so enjoyed your reactions to this series! I wanna chime in with what others said and suggest you check out the Director’s Cut of Rocky IV. Drago’s character is more fleshed out. A lot of reactors are curious as to why Drago was so quiet. I think the point is that he’s a propaganda puppet for the Soviet Union against the West. That’s why it’s such a big deal towards the end when he screams that he’s fighting for himself. He might have been put in a gulag for being defeated (I haven’t seen Creed II yet, so no one spoil anything for me!).
