got to meet Dolph Lundgren at a convention a few years ago. during the Q&A, he talked about how when he was hired for Rocky 4, he was still new to acting and hadn't figured out how to pull his punches yet. Stallone directed him to hit for real on a few close ups. Dolph obliged. Next thing, production is halted for a few days because Dolph's punch sent Stallone to the hospital with swelling around his heart. Dolph was worried he'd killed Stallone.

I'm really excited for this reaction. I'm Swedish, and when this came out (I was 13), it was the first time a Swedish actor (Dolph Lundgren playing Drago) - to my knowledge at the time - was in a big Hollywood movie, against a big Hollywood action movie star. It was such a hype to see that you could go from even tiny Sweden, all the way to the big screen, so while I probably wouldn't say it's the best Rocky movie of them all, it will always have a special place in my heart.

I always thought it was funny that the two main "Russian" characters in this movie were Swedish and Danish. 🤔Was the Actress, Ingrid Bergman Swedish? She was before my time but, she was a major Hollywood star during her era. Probably before your time too. IDK, maybe she was Norwegian. I forget.
@phj223
@phj223 9 ай бұрын
@@RealDiehl99 Yeah, Ingrid Bergman was Swedish, but as you say before my time. To this day I don't believe I've seen any of her movies, not even the most famous one, Casablanca. o.O And as mentioned there had been other Swedish actors who made it big, like Max von Sydow (The Exorcist) as probably the most prominent one, but we also had some Bond-girls (Britt Ekland and Maud Adams) that predated Dolph's appearance in Rocky IV, and we also had Anita Ekberg who among other movies starred in Fellini's La Dolce Vita (there's a famous fountain scene). But yes, all of them were completely unknown to me at 13. :) Later on of course Stellan Skarsgård would go on and land roles in Hollywood movies, and today most people are aware of him and his sons' success, but afaik Stellan first role outside Sweden was as Captain Tupolev (yes another Russian goddammit xD) in The Hunt For Red October (1990).

@phj223 "Yes another Russian goddammit"🤦🤣 I hope you don't think I was trying to discredit your reaction to seeing Mr. Lundgren on the big screen. That would be very rude of me to do. I was just trying to pull a famous Swedish actor from the depths of my memory. Unfortunately my knowledge of actors from your country is very limited. I'm more familiar with Swedes who play in the NHL or those from Gothenburg (Göteborg) who produced a unique style of heavy metal music! Thanks for sharing with me some names from the world of entertainment.

The dual training montage, i believe, was to reflect their dedication and heart when pushed to their limits. In the end, both were running on inclines, but Drago hit his limit and stopped, while Rocky had just a tiny bit more as he continued to climb until he reached the summit. That is how it played out in the fight. Rocky had just a bit more in reserve when both men were exhausted. But this fight had a very costly price, as revealed in the next Rocky film.

Dolph Lundgren (Drago) is a trained martial artist. He had not really learned how to throw fake movie punches, so he would occasionally hit the other actors quite hard. Carl Weathers (Apollo) got legitimately upset and threatened to quit because of Lundgren's aggressiveness. Whille filming the fight at the end up the movie, one of Lundgren's punches hit Stallone in his chest, and his heart bounced against his sternum. He had to be emergency airlifted to the hospital with swelling of the heart and an irregular heartbeat, and he spent 2 weeks in intensive care. Though Stallone clearly recovered, the situation was so dire that a priest was sent in to give him his Last Rites because they were afraid that he might die. Stallone got into incredible shape for this movie, but admits that he likely pushed himself too hard. He claimed that he was living on only toast and coffee everyday, and he often felt so lightheaded that he might pass out. He would even do hand stands in the ring in between shots while filming Rocky's fight with Drago to increase the blood flow to his brain and keep himself from passing out.

A couple of interesting Facts about Dolph Lungren aka Drago: 1. Dolph Lundgren might just be one of the smartest men in the world, let alone in Hollywood. After graduating from high school with straight A's, he spent some time in the United States in the 1970s on various academic scholarships. Lundgren has attended Washington State University, The University of Sydney, Clemson University, The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sydney and was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship at MIT 2. Stallone first rejected the 183 cm Lungren for this roll but Dolph sent in pictures of himself in boxing shorts and Stallone hired him 6 week later. Stallone may have regretted taking on Lundgren when filming for Rocky IV started as during one of the tapings Lundgren sent Stallone to the hospital. Lundgren and Stallone decided to spar, This ended with Stallone taking a body punch from Lundgren that put Stallone in the hospital and insurance companies thought Stallone was hit by a car, not a person. lol

Movie recommendation since vampires were mentioned again: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), starring Gary Oldman as The Count himself, and with so many other famous actors. One regretful casting of Keanu Reeves as he has to do a British accent, but you just have to look past that. Everyone else is great, and the ambience and tone of the movie is just magical. It's actually very romantic as well, eternal love and all that.

I'm glad you liked this one. Rocky won the match because he came into it with heart. Drago came into the match feeling like a lab rat. When the politician called Drago an idiot, I think Drago was trying to convince himself that he wins matches for himself rather than being an obedient servant. I agree with what you said. Everyone should feel patriotic to their country. something i noticed in the Rocky vs Drago fight was that while it didnt seem like it for a while, those body punches started taking a toll on Drago's body. also... the more times that Rocky refused to stay down, the more it started to mess with Drago's head. you can tell he was getting more and more frustrated because as the fight progresses, his punches start becoming less and less powerful and disciplined and going more into desperate.

So excited to watch this reaction. I hope you enjoyed it Bisscute. I'm about to find out. I remember going to see this when I was 10. I still can't stand Paulie. However I really like the brotherly friendship between Rocky and Apollo and was so sad about Apollo's death. Dispite that depressing moment. The movie is fantastic, and some great music in the soundtrack, but hard to beat Eye of the tiger. Fun movie facts: The fight between Rocky and Drago was filmed at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver BC Canada. Only an hour from my house. So I thought that was very cool. The small farm where Rocky lived and trained was in Jackson Hole, and Grand Teton National Park Wyoming USA pretending to be the Soviet Union for many of the outdoor sequences. Sylvester Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen who played Drago's wife became engaged during the production of the movie. Their were married about 2 years. It would be much cooler if he had married actress Talia Shire (Adrian) but she was already married.

8:54 Of course, _this_ was a mistake. Rocky was able to best Apollo in the _first_ movie because he had undergone a training regimen specifically _for_ Apollo. Then, in the _second_ movie, Rocky underwent training specifically for a _trained_ Apollo, and it took a lot more _out_ of him, but he bested him _again._ Then, in the _third_ movie in the franchise, Clubber Lang had undergone a training regimen specifically for _Rocky,_ while Rocky had undergone a _general_ training regimen with no _regard_ for Clubber, and Clubber bested _Rocky._ But in so doing, he gave Rocky the lesson in _humility_ he needed and he committed to a _new_ regimen specific for fighting Clubber _Lang._ Then, when they got in the ring a second time, Rocky bested _Clubber._ So here, Apollo has undergone a _general_ training regimen, with no customization from an analysis of _this_ adversary. Apparently, Apollo has not learned his _lesson._ It's not enough to undergo _training._ You have to undergo training specific to your _opponent._

So much gold with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donny Yen,... but sadly I think the algorithm doesn't serve those many views in comparison to other films. Makes wonder if a channel focused specifically on Hong Kong cinema would do better in that regard than doing the occasional Western aimed martial arts film.

Dolph is actually a true gentleman. Stallone told him to really try & knock him out. So he hit him hard enough to put slyvester in the hospital for a week. Not shown in the movie.

1. Overall rating from me: Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky, Rocky II Rocky V. 2. This was an important time for the USA. Reagan. It's once again part of our world.🤬 3. Apollo's death didn't seem to affect you as much as others. 4. This was filmed primarily in Wyoming and Victoria, BC Canada 5. IRL Dolph actually cracked a couple of Sly's ribs, so filming had to be delayed so he could recover.

Things in life still happen this way. Romance is not dead. it depends on what you believe in and who. It's has to be an unconditional relationship. You should look up Rocky Marciano, a undefeated heavyweight boxer 49 wins 0 defeats with 43 knock outs. He was not very tall, but had stamina because of his training and his boxing style. Love you Biss hope you enjoy movies that get to the heart and emotions of our human culture. Be safe well healthy humble kind always...

1 is the best film, 4 is my favorite. I love Dolph and I love the little bit of cheese. They do juxtaposition in this film so brilliantly.

When Drago. Threw rocky into ropes end of the first round . That's when rocky knew he was on riods. He gave him the look of shame and disbelief.

No Sly didn’t have any help writing any of his movies. The man was offered alot of $ to sell the OG script and not be the star and he said no. They finally gave in and let him be the star. Sly is a very sweet/great guy. He’s married with 3 grown daughters and 1 son (who played his son in Rocky 5) and 1 son (his oldest child) is autistic

Fun fact, during filming, Sylvester Stallone told Dolph Lundgren to really fight him for real. Stallone wound up in the Emergency Room after filming a portion of their fight.

I agree with u Biss, there needs to be a stricter rules for paparazzi and journalists; those guys are just too much sometimes. This Rocky 4 is also one of the best ones, probably my favorite one. It also captures a little of the tension between the 2 countries and the stereotype. Also the actress that plays Drago's wife is actually the wife of Sylvester Stallone (divorced after few years).
