How many boxers today display the humility and class Rocky did, even after winning but after taking such a beating from Joe Walcott, Rocky gave Joe all the praise and credit he deserved as a great boxer who almost took him out that day. many boxers would not have been able to go the distance Rocky did with Joe Walcott, a testament to his tenacity and savage toughness. His record stands today 49-0 with 43 K.O.'s and totally undefeated, that is a LEGEND.

@@michaelares4240 you know nothing about boxing history. Rocky is the 3rd longest reigning heavyweight champ with 6 title defenses including twice against Ezzard Charles who was the heavyweight champ .The Ring rated him as the greatest light heavyweight ever & RecBox just last month rated him as 2nd all time pound for pound greatest boxer ever. The Cincinnati Cobra was no joke as he killed a man in the ring before Ray Mancini style so you’re calling the cobra who is a hall of fame boxer the only man to bring Rocky the distance in a 15 round fight a nobody means you know nothing. Then how’s about Archie “The Mongoose” Moore who he KO’d in his final fight. Archie also a hall of famer the light heavyweight champ from 52’ to 62’, The Ring ranked as the 4th out of the 100 hardest punchers ever & BoxRec ranked him just last month as the 3rd greatest pound for pound boxer in boxing history. Both were in their primes so just because you’re too lazy to research Wikipedia to see the quality of fighters you don’t recognize their names from 70 years ago doesn’t mean they are all hand picked no body’s you Jack ass!

@@michaelares4240 Sonny fought only 2 hall of famer’s in Patterson he killed twice & Ali who he gave up between rounds & took a dive in the first round in the rematch. Who else? Cleveland Williams that Ring called the finest boxer to never win a title! Look Liston was a hall of fame inducted controversial fighter for his mob ties & criminal background, but definitely a top 5 greatest heavyweight & I believe he would have beat Rocky, but that’s like saying Tyson would have beat Ali. It’s fictional opinions that mean nothing. But your comment that Rocky fought hand picked nobodies is wrong and that’s a fact. He beat 4 hall of fame big name boxers compared to only 2 for Liston & he lost to one of them twice. And I know Joe Louis was old & way past his prime when he was KO’d into retirement by Rocky, but just the same he was an all time HOF big name you call a no one because it’s Rocky? Jersey Joe Walcott also Hall of fame boxer Rocky KO’d twice. You know nothing.of boxing history so research instead of hating on a boxing legend just because your bias! Oh I forgot Liston beat Wapner so there’s a high end contender. And no I don’t believe Patterson beats Rocky as he wasn’t the strongest of chins & was a favorable match stylistically for Rocky!

@@michaelares4240 Liston boxed professionally over 12 years to a record of 50 wins & 4 losses with 39 knockouts which is phenomenal. Rocky was 49 wins, no losses & 43 KO’s with the highest KO ratio in title fights ever & 1 of the highest level career win to KO ratios ever. He only boxed for under 8 years & holds one of the longest heavyweight title reigns ever. He beat all the top contenders of his day so just give credit where it’s due already.

For 10+ years Jim Cushman has described Marciano as being so ferocious that he basically killed all 49 of his opponents in the ring. Cushman writes, "Rocky almost killed Carmine Vingo." Well Mancini 'killed' Kim, but nobody constantly brags about that like Jim does with Vingo. Cushman has all these Marciano vids completely saturated with all his exaggerated hyperbolic comments about Rocky's power and those 13 forced retirements. What Cushman fails to tell everyone is that LaStarza (with all his "Broken Bones" and "Ruptured Blood Vessels") simply had minor surgery and was fightin exactly 6 months later. Rex Layne only sustained four (4) broken teeth (wiki) and was fightin exactly 3 months later. Tell Everyone exactly who's bones little Rocky broke Jimbo?? WAITING---TIC-TOC-TIC-TOC-TIC-TOC ...The correct answer is NOBODY!!! LaStarza had tiny miniscule bone chips removed from his elbow just like David Tua did after his fight against Ibeabuchi, which were all normal boxing injuries. Also, Cushman fails to ever mention Marciano's Forced retirement. Why? Because Marciano couldn't take the pain anymore from two confirmed nose surgeries, hand surgery, hundreds of stitches, chronic back pain and constant migraines cause his head was used as a Pinata constantly gettin smacked around, here, you hit me five times, and I'll hit you back one time, Duh. Marciano was Pounded into retirement and was Forced to Quit during his Prime. And all that talk about retiring for his family nonsense was simply a bull•••• publicity stunt because he immediately abandoned his family and left them penniless when he perished.

Today's Super Heavyweight boxers average size = 6' 5" 252 lbs 79" reach. Marciano was only 5' 10" 185 lbs with the shortest ever 67" reach. But let's give him the benefit of the doubt and increase his weight up to 205 pounds. Still wouldn't help. Just can't see it. Ain't no way Rocky's taking out these modern 6' 5" 250 lb Super Heavyweights with excellent records. He'd still need the use of a stepladder inorder to reach King Fury. And modern training, nutrition and roids ain't gonna help little Rocky's T-rex alligator arms grow longer? Besides, if ya put an additional 20+ pounds on Marciano he woulda moved slower than molasses. Rocky wasn't born with fast twitch muscle fibers like Mike Tyson. Mike was genetically gifted with fast fibers and came out the gate sprinting like a 220 pound Quarter Horse. While 188 pound Marciano always came out the gate shuffling forward like a turtle. Prime Tyson KO's prime Marciano 10 out of 10 times. Maybe Marciano could have beaten that circus clown Jess Willard who was paraded around for 4 years without a single fight. Or maybe he could have even beat that other circus clown Primo Carnera who was daily alcoholic (like Andre the Giant) and 100% mafioso controlled. The ‘ambling alp’ was an awful boxer with gigantism or acromegaly (like Andre the Giant). He was promoted as a monster because of his size, but he was really clumsy and couldn`t punch with his full weight, he was completely exposed by Joe Louis who easily battered Primo into submission. The majority of Marciano's 43 KO's came against undercard B-Level light heavyweight Journeymen which makes his power dubious and/or questionable. Yes, Rocky was GOAT from 52 to 56. But that was during the smallest low-power heavyweight division era of all time. How can this little cruiserweight possibly outrank Foreman, Lewis and Holmes is beyond me. Smh.

Back then 175+ lbs was considered heavyweight, even during Ali's era. Heavyweight finally changed to 200+ lbs in 1979. The several ATG fighters that Marciano did face were light heavyweights that simply moved up for the money because the division was completely void of any quality 200+ pound authentic Heavyweights let alone 224+ lb Super Heavyweights. Any heavyweight champion under 200 pounds should be permanently removed from all record books. Or an asterisk (*) placed before their name meaning *Cruiserweight. Eventually it's gonna happen, mark my words.

Southpaw Usyk is actually bigger than Ali. Joshua came in at 240 lbs, only an 18 lb weight advantage over a comfortable 222 lb Usyk who is 6' 3" with 78" reach. Holyfield was 6' 2.5" 218 lbs with 78" reach. Michael Spinks was 6' 2.5" 208 lbs with 76" reach. Prime Clay/Ali was 6' 2.5" (passport) 212 lbs with 78" reach. And of course we mustn't forget 5'10" 186 lb Marciano with his famous shortest-ever 67" flyweight reach. Shocking isn't it. Those other small guys weren't so small after all. They already had the natural height and reach so they were able to assimilate into the Heavyweight division with few problems. On the other hand 186 lb Marciano had some serious dwarfism problems going on with his reach. Simply put Marciano's bone structure was too short to assimilate effectively. Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. No way Rocky would beat a prime Iron Mike. 1980's 20yr old phenom Mike easily KO's Rocky 10 outta 10 times!

Size obviously matters otherwise boxing wouldn't have 18 different weight classes. Featherweights would be fightin middleweights and cruisers would be fightin Super Heavies. There are no height divisions, age divisions or reach division, because weight at heavyweight boxing is one of the most important factor. Super Heavyweights are increasing because eastern European fighters are now allowed to fight in USA since around 2000 and international travel is much easier compared to 30 40 50 years ago. Perfect example would be the ATG Klitschko brothers who dominated Super Heavyweight boxing for 20YRS!!!! 72yr old boxing legend Larry Holmes recently said, "there should be a size limit on heavyweights after giant Tyson Fury took over the division." "The heavier opponent will have an advantage as they have increased muscle mass, allowing them to hit harder and withstand strikes from their opponent more easily. It is for this reason that combat sports separate fighters based on weight class" - by MMA Combat Sports Even a new Bridgerweight division (200 to 224 lbs) has recently been added because too many 210lb heavyweights complained. We'll never see 181lb Charles, 182lb Patterson or 184lb Marciano as 'Heavyweight' champions again! Boxing has evolved: [[[[[ 🏋️""SIZE-MATTERS""🏋️ ]]]]] NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF BOXING HAS A 190 LB MAN BEAT AN ELITE SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION🥊

During the deepest era in light heavyweight history Gold Medalist Undisputed Undefeated HOF ATG GOAT Michael Spinks beat Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and Dwight Muhammad Qawi and knocked out Yaqui Lopes and Marvin Johnson, which was not easy to do in their primes. And he beat the real heavyweight champion to win the title, who was also undefeated. Michael Spinks is the most accomplished light heavyweight in history. Light heavyweight Charles Lost (25) times and was KOd (7) times. Light heavyweight Moore Lost (23) times and was KOd (7) times. Would Marciano still be considered an ATG if he had 29 wins 20 losses? Of course not. Then why is Charles/Moore ranked higher than Spinks? Because they fought little Marciano which automatically makes them immortal even though they Lost "FORTY-EIGHT" times and were "KTFO-FOURTEEN" times. It's no wonder HOF Greats Jimmy Cannon and Bert Sugar said, "Marciano's era was horseshit."

@Amare Kwame absolutely spot on. That draw makes Tyson Fury's record blemished & imperfect, which means it isn't flawless. And even without that draw he would still have to reach and surpass Marciano's 49 victories.

@asdadfafafafffallslsldd8068 3 жыл бұрын
@Amare Kwame Don't be silly. The draw doesn't make a difference. He did actually beat Wilder in that fight anyways and everyone knows the draw was a robbery. Fury is an active fighter and he may still go on to lose. I just don't think people should care so much about not getting that L. That only promotes the fighters to take easy fights and fighting big names at the right time (when they're old has beens) or into them simply retiring too early to avoid the L. Marciano fought way before my time and I obviously don't know the full story, but alot of people said he fought the greats like Joe Luis at the right time. It's like Fury and AJ fighting Klitschko at 39 and 41. The best must fight the best during their primes for it to have any real substance! If Marciano only fought the good names when they were past their best his unbeaten record shouldn't matter much at all. Keep in mind that a guy like Brian Nielsen held the record for the longest unbeaten streak of any hw at his time, obviously only because he had fought nothing but tomato cans. Anyone can manipulate a record and go out unbeaten if they really want to and if they don't care about big money fights. Fury - Wilder is the only mega fight we've seen out of this generation of hw's. Hopefully we get to see Fury - AJ also or even Wilder - AJ. Having said all this. I do regard Marciano as one of the greatest and he's a huge inspiration.

Combined, Walcott/Charles/Moore lost (68) times and were KO'd (20) times. Would Marciano still be considered an ATG if he went 29 wins 20 losses? Of course not. Then why is Walcott Charles Moore considered ATGs? We all know why, to protect Marciano's white 49-0. Had Rocky never existed Nobody would be talking about Walcott Charles Moore. Truth is Marciano fans could careless about Walcott Charles Moore otherwise they would never denigrate Ali Liston Holmes Tyson Wilder etc. It's all about skin color. I've studied Marciano extensively for 8 months and it just dawned on me that this is exactly what's happening. Rocky fanboys always besmirch and belittle black fighters EXCEPT for Walcott Charles Moore. I've witnessed it hundreds of times, pure Hate for Liston Holmes Tyson yet pure Love for Walcott Charles Moore.

37 year old Joe Louis had already been fightin "17yrs" with 68 fights and 96 fights before 2 million soldiers during his 4 year military service before facing little Rocky. Joe's speedy reflexes were non-existent and it looked as if he was wadding through mud. And that 8 fight winning streak Joe had before fightin Rocky was a complete set-up using carefully selected hand-picked opponents. 38/39 year old cruiserweight Journeyman Joe had 49 wins 20 losses according to BoxRec. So 41% of all his fights were losses. Walcott had already been fightin for "22yrs" with 68 fights and an abysmal 44% KO's before facing little Rocky. He definitely was not prime. Walcott Lost (20) times and was KO'd (6) times. Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles had already been fightin "15yrs" with 95 fights and an abysmal 43% KO's before facing little Rocky. His best boxing years were already behind him at light heavyweight. Charles Lost (25) times and was KO'd (7) times. 41 year old light heavyweight Archie Moore had already been fightin "20yrs" with 178 fights before facing little Rocky in 1955. Exactly 95% of his 141 TKO's came against welterweights, middleweights, light heavys, and small cruiserweights. Moore Lost (23) times and was KO'd (7) times. Meantime little cruiserweight Rocky Marciano only fought a measly "8yrs" with only 49 fights before he abruptly quit during his prime at only 31yrs of age. If you eliminate his debut fight he actually fought "7yrs" because there was a 15 month gap between his 1st fight and 2nd fight. Little Rocky quitting so soon is not only shameful but not fair to other genuine Heavyweights that he's surpassed in the top 10 rankings. No way in hell this little dude should be ranked higher than Holmes Lewis Foreman Vitali Wladimir Holyfield Tyson Bowe Liston Fury Wilder. His ranking is paid for by rich Italian American donors.
@Bobby.D.1776
@Bobby.D.1776 2 жыл бұрын
If little Marciano had just ONE draw (48-0-1) everyone would have abandoned his ship long ago. But his '0' is the ONLY thing that keeps him afloat. Marciano's top 10 ranking is determined by computer metric algorithms. Problem is this man made program was coded to exclude WEIGHT from the equation. That's why 165 lb 'Heavyweight' champion Bob Fitzsimmons from the 1800s is ranked ahead of giant Riddick Bowe. How's it possible 185 lb Marciano ranks higher than Fury Ibeabuchi Holmes Lewis Bowe Vitali Wladimir Foreman etcetera? Now we know why. Even though Heavyweight champions ranged from 165 to 275 lbs, ranking bodies still exclude WEIGHT from their metric, yet they acknowledge (17) different WEIGHT classes, imagine that. Top 10 rankings should be looked upon with a grain of salt!!! Unfortunately Rocky fanboys cling to his ranking as if it were life and death.

I mean he was out and his eyes were blank, and you saw his soul come back into his body... and he willed himself up. How you stop a guy like that? Safe to say Marciano wins most 15th rounds. All of this needs to be put Into context. He was the smallest heavy weight boxer with the shortest reach of all time. He should have been a middleweight by normal standards but no, he was in my estimation the greatest boxer who ever lived because of his shortcomings. I'm an ex-boxer so I know what it's like but to be mismatched the why he was and to come out on top is superhuman. He struggled to make the weight he was so small and to be able to produce that amount of power is awe inspiring. Mayweather can fuck right off.

@ brian n And given that you were a boxer what would you have to say about all the constant instinct maybe rightful negativity that his opponents were unknown and they were Older and out of their prime ? As you've said for the most part Rocky Marciano was actually at a disadvantage all the time.

@@ssabp8313 all I have to say is: The fights were longer. The horse hair packed gloves were harder, lighter and designed protect the hands not your opponent so they, as a group, were harder than the vast majority of boxers today. To try to denigrate his opponents shows little understanding of what it was like to be a top level fighter back then. Moore v Marciano is all I have to say. Moore was the unbeaten undisputed light heavey weight at the time and moved up a weight to fight Marciano. They were perfectly matched and no modern fight would be allowed to go as far as it did. Moore looked like he'd been beaten with a brick by time he was knocked out by Marciano. Moore had a record of 194-26-8, and his 141 knockouts are believed, at the time of his death in 1998, to be the most by any professional boxer. I saw him in interview say he'd never been hit as hard as he was by Marciano. He simply said Marciano had pure punching power and no amount of money or training would give you what Marciano had. That's the internet for you. A place where a bunch of nobodies try to take down the greats. He would have sent every heavyweight boxer since the Tyson era home in a box including Fury.

@@bnewellz Well I could see where you're defending more and I always thought a lot more of more in the past you know a lot more than I do obviously about his record even though I know what I know about him the point here is this 1st hole among a nobody and there are a lot of no bodies. Now what you're talking about in this interview was not said here. I've read enough postings where people are knocking Marciano saying what about his rabbit punches and I have been actually very hard on Marciano and when the past I've often said the man was not a boxer Guys like Louis Walcott more Charles lestarza LA starza these are boxer fighters mainly boxers they've got technique then again maybe Marciano had technique too. The point I'm trying to bring out is this clinching I've been saying since I was a little kid watching boxing. The boxing commissions that make up the rules and the referees too that of course enforced them allow for clinching because it keeps the match going on. I look at guys like Holmes not much of a clencher the guy is just an outnow and animal and hes a phenomenal boxer and fighter haggler same thing yeah same thing Tommy hurns then you gotta guy like Sugar Ray Leonard Mr. Flurries Mr. Fluff and puff and he gets away with murder. My point where Morris concerned is everybody's against morsiano toward the Gray because hes the caveman. But there's no negativity coming out against Moore Is lots of boxers that it is great for clinching it's a tactic. One video even said oh yeah as soon as he breaks from the clinch he uses that opportunity to hit Marciano. I was in a contact sport when I was much younger. There were people that clinched they pulled little things I was in karate I was in martial arts they would grab legs they grab your arms bullshit like that because if they didn't they get their ass whipped. To me that's cheating. That's like taking a test and saying well I got a 90 on it but me more you cheated. This is the point I'm trying to but say there's no criticism of guys like more. It's the constant criticism of Marciano he fought older guys I don't know George Foreman did phenomenal and yes didn't fight the quality of people that he fought in the past nor people the quality of Moore. Like I said I've had my criticisms of Marciano in the past I cut the bread straight but nobody ever cuts the bread straight when it comes to these other boxers that's my pointhat's my point they get away with murder slipping and sliding . I think you die like haggler would actually agree with something like that that's why you stop boxing because he got fed up this is my point. Ask for what you're saying regarding more Saint Marciano was just a pieyeah Marciano was just pure power I've actually had heard that con I've heard that interview before I totally forgot about it completely forgot about it more seems to have 2 sides to him I've seen his interviews. This time these very gentlemen like and then there's other times he sounds very sore this is the impression I've gotten. And this is coming from someone that likes a big mouth like Larry Holmes but you know what Larry Holmes can back it up that's that's my point. You look at a loud mouth like Muhammad Ali and he is a loud mound but that's his tactic that's part of his show but the fact is the man was great and he had the power to back it up he wasn't a powder puff. I call it the way I say it there's no there's no bias here it's just maybe getting a little fed up. I hope you could understand what I'm coming from

@@bnewellz As far as denigrating his appointments I've never denigrated any of his opponents Jersey Joe one of the great of course Joe Lewis 1 of the great Ezra Charles another great. These men are no slouches their greats. More I've seen on more than one occasion he has something of an attitude. And like I said before this is coming from someone that thinks hell of a lot of a guy like Larry Holmes and Larry Holmes could back it up he could afford to be a big mouth. Muhammad Ali could afford to be a big mouth even though that was his tactic. And I could just keep going on about people Even though I would say you probably have a deeper knowledge of boxers and their records than I do echoed then I don't you probably older than me till you might be. Well I could say as this I was in contact sports when I was younger I didn't like people that clenched if you couldn't take a punch you couldn't take a kick that's too damn bad don't tryeah it's ed don't try and grab my kicks don't try and clinch with me just so you can get away with the match and then come out and Wallop me and score a point. Those are cheap shots. The other thing about boxing is it's called money I didn't fight for money.

How can you even COMPARE those two eras?? - Marciano's era when there was basically ONE federation and you had to fight EVERYONE to get to the top, and the times when Mayweather was fighting when there were already five or six federation (if not more) and most of the the so-called "Champions" didn't even meet for the most part ?? - not to mention! - do you really count guys like freaking Connor MGregor among his "wins"?? That may have been a tough guy but was NO BOXER! Come on! There is a good reason that Boxng went downhill - from being the "KING OF SPORTS" to just "one of the many". Fucking BASEBALL is more "popular" today than Boxing, even though it's BORING AS HELL. Tyson was right when he said that something happened "along the way" - quote: "All these young so-called Boxers nowadays are just SHOWMEN. Back in the day we were killers that happened to boxe - today they are all showmen pretending to boxe.".

Rocky retired undefeated but as a long-time Rocky fan I must recognise the distinct possibility he lost to Ted Lowry first time around. Like many I would love to believe in an unbeaten heavyweight champion but having read several reviews of the 1st Marciano-Lowry fight I give it to Ted (Tiger) Lowry, a gentleman of the first order. That takes nothing away from the Rock as he won the return and then went on to great things. Rocky remains unique in that of all the heavyweight champs he was never kayoed, never stopped, and spent the least amount of time on the canvas of them all.
@peterleitch48
@peterleitch48 3 жыл бұрын
@Studentofsweetscience Tiger Ted was the only man to go the distance twice with Marciano. This match up is a classic example and proof that styles make fights. Marciano himself said something like he could have fought Lowry a hundred times and not figured out his style. I note Lowry's poor record going into his fight with Rocky but all the ringside reporters scored the fight for Lowry. They were actually there and so too was the crowd that booed the decision, according to eyewitnesses some of whom were Rocky fans but obviously boxing fans too. Mike Stanton's excellent book on Marciano 'Unbeaten' covers the Lowry bouts well and is a great informative read. I reckon you would greatly enjoy it.
@peterleitch48
@peterleitch48 3 жыл бұрын
@Studentofsweetscience Yes sir, I have. Rocky fought Lowry in Providence, Rhode Island which was his base after turning pro with Al Weill and under the tutelage of Charley Goldman. This was his 17th fight out of the 27 he fought there. The fight fans of Providence welcomed Rocky with open arms since his earliest victories and the Providence Journal followed his career closely, in particular the Journal's boxing commentator Michael Thomas who was not slow to bestow upon the Rock every praise he could. The first Lowry fight was a different bit of copy though, Thomas, along with others at ringside gave it to Lowry 6 to 4. A young Clark Sammartino, who was later to become an international and world class boxing referee also gave it to Lowry. Eyewitnesses to the booing at the decision confirm that the majority of the crowd were white Italian-Americans. Providence itself though was long recognised as a dodgy place in the fight game and many visiting pugilists feared fighting there. This is not to tarnish Marciano himself but his manager Al Weill worked with the mob and was no stranger to Frankie Carbo. By his 21st fight there was gathering interest in Marciano who was starting to be thought of as a contender and thus required special handling. Your original reply to my initial post offers that Lowry's poor record against Marciano's 20 and 0 makes it unlikely that Lowry won. Boxing is full of upsets like this so I will not try to oppose your reasoning as the sport itself does so. Lowry was a curious fighter and had nearly as many losses as he had wins, going 70-68-10, but among his fights he can claim to have beaten Joey Maxim in a non-title fight at Saint Paul, Minnesota after which there were shenanigans that saw the up and coming Maxim declared the winner. Lowry also went the distance with Roland La Starza, Jimmy Bivins, Lee Oma, Archie Moore and Lee Savold. There are three Hall of Fame fighters in that lot so Lowry was clearly no mug, inconsistent yes but he knew his trade. In reading the reports from ringside it appears that Lowry won the first four of the ten rounds then went into retreat, actually being warned by the referee that he would be disqualified if he didn't fight back. Lowry continued to lose round after round to a resurgent Marciano but apparently came back to win two of the remaining six. Lowry's reluctance to fight would not have gone down well in an era where the aggressive fighter always caught the eye and none more so amongst the heavyweights as Marciano. So who really did win? I cannot know as I wasn't there but as a lifelong Marciano fan I am prepared to accept Rocky lost this one as well as the first La Starza bout but show me a fighter that didn't benefit from some 'assistance' and I will show you a mirage. Its been good chatting to a fellow fight fan and I think a fellow Marciano fan. For all the talk his record will continue to be 49-0. What a champ!

@@peterleitch48 I will suppose that Lowry stayed away from Marciano after round 4 because (like every Rocky opponent) he was getting hit while scoring points, and came back fighting in rounds 9 and 10 so as to not lose. I compare that to the Harry (Kid) Mathews fight, a skilled and experienced boxer, who dropped his hands in the 2nd round against Marciano and accepted the early KO rather than get beaten up in a fight he couldn't win. And compare that to the 1st Walcott fight where Joe knocks Marciano down right off but also starts taking hits from the 3rd round on, and slows down every round thereafter, even after Rocky is blinded for a couple middle rounds by red pepper liniment from Joe's glove. That dramatic 13th round KO was caused by the accumulated 10 previous rounds of hits. Joe was punchy by the 9th round. Rocky was always losing on points because the lack of reach drove him to an inside fighting style, but the relentless body blows brought down the arms of Walcott Charles Moore Louis et al until the KO. Rocky could never fight at range and win because of his arm length and so could never win any fight on points. It was KO or lose every time, whether a Lowry or a Charles. Ali would have used the same strategy as Lowry which fails beyond round 9 or 10. Ali in particular could take head shots but body blows brought his movement to a standstill. The Marciano win or die necessity accounts for the unmatched savagery in his fight footage. Rocky wins any fight against any fighter past or present (including Fury) that goes 15 rounds on conditioning and the unstoppable will force of nature he brought into the ring. Marciano's 1st fight after almost killing Vingo was LaStarza who he just boxed for 12 rounds, and decisioned him on the fights only knockdown. After LaStarza made noise about winning that bout Rocky let him have it in the 2nd fight. Again, everyone (great and not so great) piled up points until the velocity of Marciano's punches took their toll. The military tested Rocky's Suzie Q as having the impact of a 45 magnum. Short arms meant wicked arm speed but also a strength imbalance between upper and lower body, so that Rocky was throwing his lower back out after every missed punch. The accumulation of missed punches eventually made training for a 20 round fight too laborious, and his back forced an early retirement. Believe it or not Rocky was half as good for half as long as he could have been. Today's bodywork training (like Rolfing or Pilates or even Tom Bradys TB12) would have easily solved his back problems. Even so, Rocky Marciano overcame a developmental disability to make himself boxing's atg fighter. Maybe you can get a ring judge to say Lowry didn't lose to the Rock. But how can it be said that he won? Marciano wasn't smooth like Louis or slick like Sugar Ray or sharp like Ali. He just would not be denied. He always found a way to win against the odds. There isn't another fighter whose film footage could have inspired the Rocky movies. The best there ever was, or ever will be.
