What a great man Mr Vingo was. I grew in Woodlawn, NY in the Bronx. It was a dominant Irish area and still pretty much is to this day. The street we lived on Oneida Ave had a deli where all the old school Irish amd Italian guys all hung out. Carmine was one of them. Wishing I knew then what I know now about him. He was a generous man who loved kids and watching us play all different sports. He called me "Little Bambino" because I was like 5 years younger than all the other kids I played baseball with, but, I hung with them better than the guys their own age. Carmine used to always tell me "Don't let anyone ever mistreat you, talk down to you, or try to take advantage of you as long as you live. God, I miss those days. RIP to all the true old school warriors of the Bronx who raised me. Youre all missed

Nobody gives Marciano's conditioning the credit it deserved. Tyson threw an average of 30+ punches per round, Frazier 50+, Marciano 80+ He was also a very good puncher. You rarely see a puncher with power putting up those numbers. Also, the _"Awkwardness"_ that people attribute to Marciano is due to the fact that he didn't fight like a boxer. At all. But that's like saying a mixed martial artist doesn't know how to fight, or is awkward. The guy seriously looks like Khabib Nurmagomedov if he had to _"ground & pound"_ standing. He would physically stick to people and fight from the clinch for nearly the entire fight. Anyone who has wrestled knows how exhausting that is, let alone your average boxer. That's not even to mention the fact that he uses his head like a wrestler in the clinch. It's almost like his style was to muscle people around with a system of dirty boxing he knew how to fight and defend himself from, and would naturally make him very difficult to finish from the clinch... since he's already clinched.
@cornfilledscreamer6142 жыл бұрын

@pipewelda2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Rocky was a DEVASTATING PUNCHER, but not just that. Rocky could take the toughest and most brutal of punches by any man and what made him even more dangerous. You just couldn’t hurt the guy! You’d have be pretty desperate or have a few loose screws to go into the ring with this kind of fighter. Ezra Charles hit Rocky with everything he had, his best and most powerful punch, on his chin, and knocked Rocky down on the ring floor for exactly 2 seconds. Rocky got up and shook it off like it was nothing. You know that had to have an enormous effect on Ezra after that. He was probably thinking to himself “OH FUCK ME, I’M IN FOR EITHER A LONG PAINFUL NIGHT OR A REAL SHORT ONE.”
@richardmilliken87052 жыл бұрын
@@pipewelda You're thinking of Joe Walcott because besides him, only the Old Mongoose/Moore knocked Marciano down for 3-4 seconds/flash knockdowns. Walcott was dominating Marciano for 12 rounds by 8-4 on two score cards and by 7-5 on the other scorecard and Rocky was told that he better go for a KO in the 13 th round and Rocky's KO Punch in the 13th round against Walcott was one og the greatest KO punches of all-time. Ezzard was the only fighter to go 15 rounds against Marciano in a very close fight. In their 2nd fight, Charles split Rocky's nose in half and cut Rocky's left eye badly. Vingo was his "TOUGHEST" fight? Come on!...Let's be serious. He had to face guys like Walcott that - basically - BASHED Rocky for thirteen rounds. Joe threw EVERYTHING he had on Marciano and yet Rocky withstood it all ... with blood dripping all over from his face, head and chest ... all that just to sledgehammer Walcott with one blow when there was ...what?... 30 seconds of the fight left? - I don't think Carmine Vingo was the "toughest" opponent for him, unless... UNLESS we're talking about the psychological blowback he had to face, when he realized he almost killed the guy. PS. Goddamnit! - these men were KILLERS on the Ring! Today they are just...who the hell even are they? ...SHOWMEN on steroids?? I cannot see ONE of those new - "modern" - Boxers nowaday, who could (or WOULD) take the punishment of the sort Marciano took from Walcott - or (far less!) - taking it ... and then STILL WINNING THE FIGHT BY KNOCKING THE OTHER GUY OUT - leaving him "sleeping" on the canvas.

@Karelin ...you mean the steroids "champions" that fight once a year?? :D ...yeeahhmNO! Guys like Walcott had a way longer reach than him, they did all they could and still couldn't knock Marciano out. After a while that long reach will be only detrimental to you, because once you have a longer reach it doesn't matter if it is 2 inches longer, 12 or twenty. You think Tyson had a long reach or was in some manner or the other "physically superior"? :) In close quarters they're gonna have their ribs bashed in - Marciano knew it, Frazier knew it, Tyson knew - their styles were quite similar in fact. PS. ...and by Tyson I don't mean "Tyson" Fury.

@@TheNYHITTINGACADEMY Jersey Joe was 36 years old when he lost to Ezzard Charles. Then, when Jersey Joe was 37 years of age, he beat a young (30 years of age) Ezzard Charles, not once, but twice in a row. The difference in age was incredible and it made Jersey Joe, the oldest ever heavyweight boxer to win the title. He was just a few months older when he lost to Rocky, not only once, but twice. Suffice to say, I respect both boxers whereas you look for excuses to hide your racist agenda. Herein lies the difference between you and others who have signalled this out. Furthermore, we could wipe Alis record of his victory over Archie Moore who was 48 years of age and in no way should have fought Ali.

@@TheNYHITTINGACADEMYBring me an argument. I could say the same thing about Mike Tyson. Put him in Alis era and he would never have been champion. Now, give me something that I can argue with instead of strawman arguments.

Fighters were built different back then. People were in general. They had to be. Fighters today don’t compare in most cases. The ones that work like the old guys are the most successful of course. Beterbiev, Bernard Hopkins when he was fighting at 50. Maybe Bud Crawford. That work and lifestyle pays off

Marciano's conduct after the Vingo fight is about the only bad thing that can be said about him IMO. Most fighters that inadvertently kill an opponent in the ring do something for the family afterward. Sergei Kovalev is a good recent example. He donated all that he earned in his next bout. From what Vingo's wife said, Marciano kept making promises that he never kept. I've read that he, Marciano, was a miser. Whatever the case, as heavyweight champion he could easily have put the word out. Any number of people with "connections" would have been only too willing. Vingo himself, who held no grudges, invited Marciano to his wedding. He held menial jobs throughout the rest of his life. Nobody's picture perfect, but still....
