It's not the first time you see Marciano missing a punch and falling to the floor on momentum. This is an impressive demonstration of how he charged his punches with the whole body. After the KD follows a beating so savage that the referee stops the fight even if maybe this wise decision seemed premature to some onlookers, if compared to the standards of the 50's.

Rocky took 5 or 6 rounds to solve the style of the skilled and experienced boxers he encountered at the upper levels. Once he found a way in he became overwhelming, and was devastating in rematches. The 1st Marciano/LaStarza fight 3 yrs before was his first after nearly killing Vingo in the ring and he chose to box him, winning a close decision by a knockdown. LaStarza make public his displeasure with that decision before the 2nd fight, and so the Rock let him have it in this one.
@chrisslater40532 жыл бұрын
La Starza said of their previous fight, a punch to his forearm in the 2nd round numbed his whole arm. Ali mentioned too that in some playful sparring, Marciano hurt one of his arms with a punch. Now that's power, since it's from a padded glove.

The secret behind Marciano's victory was his constant pressure on the opponent without leaving a gap for the opponent to punch. His unique style is followed by joe Frazier and mike Tyson, and the reason is simple because they are of the same length and this is a successful technique for the Shear Boxer not leaving a distance and the constant pressure without retreat

Underrated ring savvy. He knew how to get inside and defeat the more experienced and more skilled boxers he encountered at the upper level of boxing. Roland La Starza was a great boxer and a hero for serving in the Army in WWII. But the only reason Rocky's first win was a "split-decision" and not a Unanimous Decision, was because they were using some kind of jacked-up supplemental scoring system in that bout that didn't award points for knockdowns. And Rocky had knocked La Starza's ass down in that first fight. Roland talked a lot of crap about that loss. I think Rocky shut his mouth this time.

This fight is distinguished only by the courage and tenacity of la starza a wasteful performance by marciano he should have had lastarza out of there in round 7

LaStarza said some things publicly about the 1st fight and Rocky made sure he paid for it in this one by carrying him into the late rounds as punishment.

Marciano was barely 5'10" and Fitzsimmons was 5'11 1-2". Only Tommy Burns was shorter than Marciano.

Nat Fleischer said Lastarza was the best defensive fighter of his era. I don't know how true that is but it's a tremendous compliment to both fighters.
