I've been mourning my last dog and had decided that I wasn't doing to be a dog owner anymore. You inspired me to go to my local shelter and adopt a young dog (less than a year) off their forget me not list. He's pretty much spent his whole life in a shelter. He has a lot to learn about the world, but I want to give kudos to the shelter staff and volunteers who clearly gave him a lot of love and attention. He is a happy, sweet guy who is anxious to please and learns quickly. He gets along great with other dogs and loves people - so he must have had plenty of opportunities to meet both. He is an awesome dog and I don't understand why no one picked him before I did (other than black dog syndrome).

However I ❤ dogs so much that I couldn't see myself without a dog & I know i can save a life and that's rewarding. I've learned that the ❤ u can no longer give to your deceased dog u can give it to the new pet 💯and it's such a beautiful thing to pass on that ❤ to a new pet who needs it so much. I like yourself ended up adopting a dog in a kill shelter in late August. It is the best thing bc they appreciate it so much🐶💯

I adopted a 4 year old Aussie in 2020. She had been rescued from a puppy mill and had been used as a breeder dog. She had been certainly neglected, if not abused. All she wanted to do was lay in a corner & be left alone. I gave her time & space, and slowly she started to come out of her corners & lay in the middle of a room (that was a big deal). She quickly learned to LOVE her walks. It took almost a year before she would come to me seeking attention & petting -- up until then she tolerated it, but didn't really want it. Fast foward to NOW: she is a certified therapy dog, LOVES kids, loves going with me everywhere in the car, and is the best companion. She is so gentle and sweet, everyone loves her everywhere we go. Rescue dogs are SO worth the time & effort!!! Please adopt.

But you seem you want to look scary by intention, if you realize you have this effect to others. With unknown people, as well as with any animal, we have no other choice, than look into their eyes, see the body movement, etc, to get an idea how they feel.

@@holger_pI realize that I have this effect on people because I've been told all my life. I'm a head taller and twice the weight of the average guy, can't help it. Also, I'm shy and since eyes turn to me whenever I enter a room, I get tense and don't often smile. In the end, people that interact with me instantly realize that I'm just a teddy bear and wouldn't hurt a fly.

I have an aussie that I rescued several years ago. I can tell you from experience that she is sitting in that window because she needs to feel in control. These dogs are extremely intelligent and one thing for certain is they like to feel that they are in control. Sitting in that window helps her with that, plus she is able to watch for her "humans" return. Poor baby. I wish I could adopt her, but I can only have one dog with my current housing situation.

From what little I know about shepherd dog breeds, that is such a typical thing. They are literally bred to keep watch, and "heading to the high ground" must be instinctual whenever they think things aren't 100% okay (even if things are, like being in a safe environment but they don't know it's safe yet). They are so intelligent, too, and I do wonder if they can imagine situations and let their imagination run away with them, particularly if they perceive something to be wrong. I might well be, er, barking up the wrong tree, but they're so smart it wouldn't surprise me!

I agree and my first thought is she is watching for her human. When I adopted a shelter dog, for a long time he was constantly searching from the car window for his previous owner, especially any trucks that he saw. She wants to be sure she doesn't miss her human if he/she walks by.

Paige looks to be an Aussie border collie mix that’s very popular with ranchers and farmers here in rural Tx. They are devoted to their humans and will often be found going everywhere in the ranch vehicles totally untethered. They wait patiently for their return and will not move until released by him/her. Also they are bred to be livestock and people “watchers” and should never be isolated in enclosed environments. It does create confusion and fear. They definitely need a job and inclusion in errand activities around and about town to fulfill their unique breeding attributes.

MOST important is to make certain that when you pick a dog you can DELIVER their needs. For Malamutes they are so smart, so large and cost plays an issue. These are dogs that need lots and lots of exercise and attention. If you work 9-5 please do not get a dog that you cannot give proper care all of their lives. I adore Mals but could not ever own one due to my inability to work hard to make them happy. I am thrilled he got adopted! Hope they realize they are lucky and also hopefully prepared for their new fam member. The aussie is waiting for someone she knows. Mine always looked out the window when I was gone.

Huskies are very prey driven and smart. I live next to a field they let over grow, cut, and bale for hay about 2-3 times a year and this causes field mice sometimes. My husky/malamute has caught a few mice that have found their way inside and getting him to drop it is like opening the jaws of life with your bare hands, when I can normally take anything out of his mouth. I have to temp him with a treat to drop it. I've seen him push his food bowl into the middle of the kitchen floor so he could watch and draw one out after he caught one the day before. They're 4 year olds in fur coats.

That husky 8 minutes in might be a “ piebald husky mix “ we rescued one. And I thought I knew huskies but I didn’t know the piebald. They are a specialty bread. About $3000 from a breeder. It’s the spots that tell me she’s a pie bald. She’s a great dog! Beautiful! And Paige “ that doggie in the window “ she’s precious! Oh I love them all. I hope piebald gets a forever home. She will be the perfect dog PIEBALD HUSKIES ARE SMART ! I have huskies but my piebald is next level smart. And Paige is very smart too. She needs a great home. And a job. Someone give her a job ! She can be the greeter. The manager of the house. lol. I love what you do ! Thank you !

I want the malemute. I had a female malemute, Sasha, 40 years ago. She was the best dog! Beautiful, too. I LOVE snow dogs. When Sasha passed I looked for another one, but found a Samoyed first and fell in love. He was amazing, too. And after him, another Samoyed. The most beautiful dogs and so loving and friendly. The hard part is the shedding and taking care of the coat. But worth it!

I grew up with a shepard/husky and he was amazing. Got him in the parking lot of a local fabric store the day after Christmas my senior year in high school and parents almost killed me, especially when he chewed up their expensive persian rug :) But when he died my dad cried like a baby. That dog would dive into our pool for tennis balls 100 times in a row. He also was afraid of storms and would literally crunch doorknobs trying to get out. But he was the king of our house!

I’m more of a Cat person, but I don’t think I could have left the shelter without Paige. She is kind of the dog of my dreams. She looks like she has some Border Collie in her, too. A couple of months of TLC and letting her run and work, and be herself in a safe environment, and she will be somebody’s furever fur-baby. Lucky people. 💜🥰🐶 She is a BEAUTY! PS - I bet if the shelter contacted a Humane Society in Canada, there is probably someone waiting for a Malamute in a location like Newfoundland, where they have cold weather 8 months of the year. 👍🇨🇦

I've devoted my life to rescuing and I mean for the rest of their lives. I'm so happy doing it. Right now, I've just got a basset hound...his sister passed and I usually go to basset hound rescue of Georgia but I'm going to find him a sibling. He needs a playmate and it's the first time I've only had one in almost 30 years. I'm home all day with Bogey and my 2cats. So that's why I wanted Tulip. I cracked up watching this video because you mentioned the song how much is that doggie in the window. Many many years ago my father told me that was the number one song the day I was born in 1953. But the joke was my dad said that’s no dog, that’s my daughter! And we laughed and laughed about that for many years. So when you mentioned that song, it really brought back some fond memories. And that dog is adorable! Thanks for the memories and thanks for what you do.

Paige reminds me of my first cat. Midnight was a private adoption, which is how I know for a fact she was abused. Midnight took a month to come out from hiding while we were awake. She was the sweetest most loyal cat I had for thirteen years. Even if they don't flip that switch and become confident and loving, it's still so rewarding to see what progress they can make. My bunny Ellie was found abandoned outside. She acts like she knows the world is an inherently dangerous place. There isn't a lot of trust there, even though we have had her for 7 years. And I'll admit I would get down about it sometimes. I just wanted a fluffer who wanted cuddles. But the trust she does show? The joy and comfort? That was hard earned. (And I adopted an old boy from the shelter who adores cuddles, to fill that hole.)

Malamutes are amazing. High energy. Tons of love. And really should live in colder climate or one that isn’t all heat year round. They truly do crave the snow and cold. My Malamute was used for breeding and I got the owner to give her to me. She lived the rest of her life on our farm. Free and loved and plenty of snow for her “puppy angels” as I called them. Katie was a beautiful dog.

Rocky, thank you for bringing attention to the plight of the malenois, another case of people not researching the breed. The malenois needs a job and a lot of training to keep them interested and stop them from becoming bored and destructive. This is an extremely smart breed, but easily gets bored. This is why they make great police and military dogs. People need to understand that if you get a Malenois it shouldn't be your first time dog they need experienced handlers

We are seeing individuals buying working dogs because they look great and our "cute", without realizing what is involved in owning a working dog. It seems that most of the aforementioned dogs in this shelter are working dogs. Dutch Malnois, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, and EVERY type of husky are working dogs. They need constant attention and training . They need to be given plenty of exercise.

I feel the first one sits in the window so she can see what's coming so she can be 'prepared' out of lack of trust and fear. Rosie is so pretty. You know the one thing you know for SURE??? That you NEVER know for sure. The dog that you least expect you'll fall in love with...years ago.....my sister had her heart set on a particular breed. And she wound up seeing Moonie, a Cairn mix who was on a site called AMSTERDOGS in NYC. She has had Moonie now, for almost a decade. When we home cared our mom (2015-2017) who had dementia and was in her 90's....she lived with my sister. And Moonie was a part of the care team. He kept an eye on mom, never got underfoot, and seemed to somehow sense mom was a little bit 'unusual' and needed attention. Dogs are amazing.

Only 2 can be trusted around our chickens, so we just keep the ladies in a chicken tractor every day so they can get their exercise, dust baths, and access to more grass and bugs. Some dog breeds are just bred for hunting, so i wouldn't expect them to resist the chickens. I am so happy Rosie got adopted out again 💓! I'm rooting for Paige!
