When the moisture gets around 50% the Lignin in the alfalfa starts sticking to the blower and the chute of the chopper. It won't blow near as far and it can plug the chute. A little water added to the windrow or to the blower will solve the problem.

You gotta see if you can put a speed up kit on the fan blower. I know on John Deere‘s pull type choppers they have a speed up kit that you use for grass and a slow down kit that you use for corn.

You mentioned the Highland "branch" of the family farming business, maybe something for the colder month would be an overview about all different aspects of the farmin and how it interconnects? On another hand: are there self driving choppers arround in your area? Her ein Germany Krone and Claas are the main vendors and pull behind choppers are not used anymore. This just on the interested side as the size of your opperation might be fitting for one of those (maybe only for testing if available...).

The way you do grass silage is really differnt from over here in germany. Here almost noone uses a self propelled swather, they just use a big butterfly cutter. Also the rake seems rather small compared to the big circle ones used here. Also chopping is mostly done with self propelled choppers. Also bagging silage is rare. Most people use either a silage pile or silage bales. So its interessting to see how its done in america

As a kid in Tyhee we were lucky to get a 3rd great crop. The Scot in me I would have welded a bolt or ready rod to the end of the rod that broke and put it back on. The highland cattle would be good winter content.

Just watching the silage coming out of the spout it looks to me that the moisture is low and is gumming in the spout liner. That is probably why the longer spout is more of a problem. I,m guessing the moisture is 60% or lower. Also the stage of the crop can also affect its blowability. I cut a lot of silage many years ago back in the late 70,s 80,s and 90,s.
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it’s probably a little bit too dry. The problem is when we get to this last crop it’s too dry for that chopper but it’s almost too wet for the bagger so it’s hard to hit a nice medium.
@dreiback182
@dreiback182 2 ай бұрын
What if you tighten the bolt on those long bars with like 5 ftlb and put a second nut on as a lock nut. Maybe the nut pulling on the threads causes it to break but if you just make sure its a bit tight and not loose but secure the nut with another counter locking nut? Maybe less downtime on the rake then...
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer 2 ай бұрын
I’m not sure because it keeps breaking at the base not where the threads are.
@dreiback182
@dreiback182 Ай бұрын
@@RockyMountainFarmer My theory would be this: Because if the bolt is tightend it causes the base to also get tightend against so flat metal with the hole. But I guess the bars are in constant movement which creates leverage and vibrations and on top comes the constant clamping force. The reason why I think the threads dont fail is, because they are supported by the hole and also under a force in one direction (tension) while the base has got tension on it and is then also shaken around. Maybe it would also help if you could get some vibration reducing device like maybe some rubber or maybe even just a spring washer and then also not have that much tension on it with the 2 nuts trick. But honestly it should be a part where the manufacturer should be responsible for designing it strong and testing it. Also all that I said is just my kind of thinking, Im not an engineer or so, just my way of an explaination why it fails...

@RockyMountainFarmer

Throughout the year, it does produce a little less where that gets driven on but not very much. What you were referring to is called a wheel line and they work just like a sprinkler pipe but they’re all hooked together with a motor in the middle so you start the motor and the whole line moves at once.

For one I much prefer you pointing the camera toward the thing youre talking about. Just once in a while I want to see your pretty face. The opposite is just as awkward - like BamaBas - I have watched him for years and never seen his face. So - too little and too much. Other than that - great videos.
