I find with the guides the easiest way to check them it run a ear cleaning Q tip around them and a scratched damaged eye will pull fluff off the Q tip. I’ve always forgotten to tighten loosen drag cleaning, good reminder !

Agree totally Ryan, Thanks. I do your version of 6 months clean on every trip after use (and on non fishing days for the hell of it). I wash all my lures in fresh water and let air dry overnight. Spray down my baitcasters and rods used on the hunt (backing off drag afterwards on reels). I then use line conditioner on the reels and rod with extra attention on the rod guides. Retie FG knots on braid to leader every second weekend if not damaged anyways. Cheers Gaz

gazpixs sounds like you’ve just eliminated a ton of common mistakes that good maintenance solves easily. All the less to go wrong when you’ve got a big fish on.

Some of my rods have slight rust/brown discoloration at the base of some of the guides. Dose this effect the structural integrity of the rod? If so how can I fix it?
@RyanMoodyFishing5 ай бұрын
Hi, if the rod is under bound theres no issue. If its a glass blank theres no issue either but if you have a graphite that is not underbound and the rust gets severe then you could have an issue. The only fix is to get the rod re-bound. Take it to local tackle store if you are not too sure as seeing it in the flesh will give them a good idea of what needs to be done. In most cases its not a problem unless it get that bad that the guide snaps on one end.

Hi Ryan, can you tell me more about that combo. Reel and rod size and what size line you run on it. Cheers.

I have always used a soft toothbrush in a bit of soapy water to give real and guides a going over, get any old dry blòod/bait off.

Would love to see your tips on cobia. Had a few cobia follow small nannygai to the surface. Was wondering what's the best way to hook em ?
@RyanMoodyFishing5 жыл бұрын
Cobia are very unpredictable and are one fish i actually hate. When you hook them they go straight to the boat then go spastic once you sink the gaff in. The only time i've seen anglers get hurt have been when cobia are involved. No real tips mate they show up when they feel like it. Generally a whole squid just off the bottom is generally what you'll catch them on or match the hatch with one of the small nannygai.
