Rod Brind'Amour On Officiating, Trade History and Winning in Carolina | 32 Thoughts Pop-Up Edition
The Carolina Hurricanes are a hard team to play thanks to their coach. Elliotte sat down with Rod Brind’Amour in Ottawa the day after his son, Skyler, won the Frozen Four with Quinnipiac. They talk about Skyler’s journey in hockey, the make up of the Canes, why he got into coaching, the Stanley Cup run in 2006, being part of some massive trades during his playing days, his relationship with owner Tom Dundon, the culture in Carolina and the changes he feels need to be made to officiating in the NHL to make it an even playing ground.

Life long die hard Philadelphia Flyers fan. Rod Brind'Amour is my all-time favorite Flyer, all-time favorite hockey player of all time! My first Flyers jersey, when I was 9, was a Brind'Amour jersey. My 8 year old son currently has said jersey! I was 15 when Philly traded Rod to Carolina and I legit cried. I didn't cry but I did tear up when Rod and Carolina won the cup in 06'. Love this dude and love seeing him being successful as a coach. Now Hall of Fame voters pull your heads out of your butts and put Rod in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He freaking deserves it!

Rod seems like such a great coach, you can tell how much the game of hockey means to him and I can only imagine how many walls his players would run through for him. He still seems like just a regular guy, it doesn't look like the fame and/or wealth went to his head. I always liked him as a player but he might be just as good if not better at being a coach.

A players coach with a good eye for the game, I think that's important. Lots of players coaches played in the 70s or 80s and don't have a good idea of how the game is now. RBA played until 2010, he's got a lot better idea what it's like in the league today.

Rod knows that Playing Your Positions and making sure some covers them is what get you the Cup. Canadian Teams hate positional hockey so they don't win the Cup. Mathews, Nylander and Marner would make better Ice Capades Skaters than Playoff Hockey Players. Then the Only Contact They have to put up with is Lifting a Pretty girl in the Air, that is More Their Style of Skating.

I like that he took the cup🏆away from Gary😂he was afraid his suggestion on the refs would get him in trouble 😂seriously thou the league should hear him out that was a good idea.😂 I 'm thinking he would make a really good GM for the leafs even as a coach but i can just see him sitting at the top next to Brendan Shanahan. We never traded him once he came here. He won the Stanley Cup here. He retired as a Cane and we raised the banner. We love Rod because he never left NC. He worked as an assistant coach for a while before he got the call for the head coach job. I appreciate when he said he’d coach the Canes or he’d retire. He’s right. We have a great place to live for players. We have good weather (until the summer and they’re gone anyway), we’ve got world class golf courses, and honestly if I saw Andrei Svechnikov at the Harris Teeter, I’d give him a head nod and a quiet “let’s go canes” as I passed his cart in the aisle. We don’t bother our canes. We know them and love them, we are still respectful and we will geek out in the next aisle over.

Rod Brind'Amour is developing into a great coach, but he isn't 'one of the best' just yet. His current coaching record doesn't come close to supporting that, but this is just his 5th year. IMO, this is his best year yet. I'm amazed how the team has overcome so many key injuries and make it to the semis. Unbelievable how good they are playing without Svechnikov and Pacioretty. Losing those 2 would have crippled most teams. Brind'Amour spent most of his career as a minus player. I guess he changed his view when he started coaching because he has everyone buying into the 2-way game.

Good for the Canes believing in their system and players they have even with the injuries. Didn't trade draft capital or prospects and hurt long term future at the deadline. All the teams that loaded up big time are eliminated already. Wish the Canucks could be ran like the Canes instead of being the worst run franchise in the league.

Rod isn’t a good coach. He just plays the trap. Sit back and take what the other team gives you. That isn’t hockey. That’s why the canes blow. That’s why anyone can come in and excel. They have no actual good players. Watch Aho he loses the puck frequently. Can’t cycle well down low. They just get their opportunities by trapping and then whoever gets the most ice time scores the goals.
